Naming your latest handgun “The American Pistol” makes a pretty clear statement. Add to that the timing of the launch of this product line amidst the backdrop of a highly contentious Presidential campaign and a continuingly more divided American narrative, and it makes a loud and clear statement. Ruger is an American company that is dedicated to American values and to its American customers.

From long-range precision rifles to custom-grade hunting rifles, there was plenty of new product debuted at the 2018 SHOT Show in Las Vegas to make every shooter take notice. If any major trends stand out, it’s the widespread and growing popularity of long-range shooting that has spawned several new precision rifle introductions, like Remington’s Model 700 PCR, as well as the popularity of cartridges like the 6mm and 6.5 Creedmoor. Breaking ground in a different arena, CZ USA showcased its 455 Scout rifle in .22 LR, which was topped with one of the company’s new proprietary suppressors. From budget-friendly to budget crushing, there was a rifle for every man’s taste at the show. Here’s a look at some of the best new rifles for 2018.   

The real surprise of SHOT Show 2018 came from Ruger, and I would argue this for best of the new firearms, and second place contender for the story of the year. Only 224 Valkyrie as a cartridge ranks higher in my opinion, and that is saying something. So Ruger has decided to enter the Pistol Caliber Carbine game, and I am really glad I didn’t spend the last year on R&D for a competing product. Because Ruger is going to sink a lot of ships with their new Ruger PC Carbine.

Ruger always as a few tricks up their sleeves and at a price that is right. We will be covering many of the other new products later in the week but decided to start with the new Security 9. Recalling the unwavering durability of the Security 6 revolver, the new Security 9 has a strong name to live up to.

Ruger is in a hurry to get 2018 started off right with a solid set of new additions to their catalog, from casual plinkers to hard-hitters.

The updated version has an interchangeable magazine well that works with SR-series and new Security-9-pattern magazines that can be swapped out for a magwell that takes Glock magazines.

The new Ruger Security-9 is a polymer-framed double-stack pistol chambered for 9mm Luger. Believe it or not it’s a full-size LCP.

Phoenix Weaponry, operating out of Longmont, Colorado, is launching a new semi-automatic rifle series chambered for .45-70 Auto, a modified .45-70 Government cartridge.

A lot of these guns are real charmers and would make great gifts leading into this shopping season for all types of shooters.
