We here at GunsAmerica first heard about what would become the FN 509 back in January, 2016 at SHOT Show. There were plenty of looks back and forth between the FN folks, followed by a polite “We’ll get back to you” when asked about it. Fast-forward 12 months to the 2017 SHOT Show, and FN responded with an invitation to a meeting at an undisclosed location in Las Vegas. At that meeting, we were given the opportunity to fire a few hundred rounds through the FN 509. We received our sample of the 509 a few weeks ago after promising not to discuss it publicly until April 17th, 2017.

The new M249S Para from FN is big, unwieldy and expensive—and lots of fun. With a price tag that is not for the faint of heart, the M249S Para brings a lot of fun semi-auto, belt-fed firepower to the range.

Building on the popularity of the already released M249S semi-automatic version of the SAW light machine gun, FN is releasing the M249S Para (or Paratrooper) model. Originally developed for airborne troops in its original form, the Para is fourth addition to the company’s Military Collector Series of semi-automatic versions of classic military firearms.

Building on this strength is what the company describes as the next evolution of the FN 15 design. The FN 15 Series will now take on what is described as a “streamlined, family” approach and feature a newly designed FN handguard with M-LOK technology. This will include the new DMR II as well as the Tactical Carbine II.

The FN15 as configured is an excellent choice for a hunting or home defense gun. And I for one think we are going to see further evolution of the AR platform under the FN banner. For one thing, only they can truly call upon the spirit of Saint John Moses Browning.

The new M249S from FN USA is a semi-automatic version of the classic SAW light machine gun. Belt-fed and ready to go, this is a great addition to the collection of any serious shooter and collector.

Some shooters want an AR-15 they can manipulate, modify, chop, crop and rebuild. FN makes ARs that fit that bill, but this isn’t one of them. The is the FN Military Collector Series M16, and it is about as close as you will get to an M16 without signing up with Uncle Sam.
