If you aren’t familiar with SCCY, they make a number of affordable pistols aimed toward the concealed carry market. Most notably their CPX-1 and CPX-2, both 9mm offerings with one having an external safety.
Most notable with the SCCY pistols is the action. While a lot of your similarly sized pistols are striker fired, SCCY took a different approach. They are instead DAO (Double Action Only). What this means is that ever trigger pull is roughly 9lbs. The pistol cycles just like a regular semi-automatic pistol, but upon resetting the trigger, you have another, consistent 9lbs trigger pull before your next shot. While experienced shooters may not find this appealing, I can appreciate the argument for this.
Newly offered this year is the SCCY CPX-3. It largely borrows from the CPX-2, both having no external safety, but is chambered in .380 Auto.
By the numbers:
- Caliber: .380 Auto
- Capacity: 10+1
- Action: DAO
- Overall Length: 5.7”
- Width: 1.1”
- Barrel Length: 2.96”
- Weight: 15 oz.
- Slide: Stainless Steel with Natural or Black Nitride Finish
- MSRP: $305
Being chambered in .380 Auto does a number of things for the pistol compared with the other CPX models. For one, it is dimensionally a little bit smaller. But more importantly, the amount of effort needed to work the slide is only 8lbs. This is important.
The ability to work a slide on a pistol has never really been of concern to me. Having said that, I recognize that there is a large number of people that this does effect. Some slides are frankly too difficult for people to manipulate for a number of reasons. Whether they lack grip strength due to age, size or perhaps an injury, this needs to be overcome. The SCCY CPX-3 is a potential solution.
With the streamlined controls and easy to work slide, chambered in a manageable .380 Auto, the CPX-3 has a lot to offer shooters. Ultimately the pistol provides a safe, inexpensive and easy to manipulate handgun designed for concealed carry. You can find out more information at SCCY.
Is there any word on when this pistol will be available for purchase? I’ve been reading about it for almost 2 years and wondering if it will ever be available.
I would never “like” a 9lb (or more) trigger pull, and the smaller the weapon, the more adverse the effect on hitting the target. I gave up on the micro-380’s until the Ruger LCP II came out.
I have the cpx and love great pistol
I would like to purchase this handgun I’m looking something for self defense.
