This week, the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO) secured a Preliminary Injunction against Colorado’s SB23-169. This law aimed to prevent individuals between the ages of 18 and 20 from purchasing rifles and shotguns.
Before the law even settled, RMGO members swiftly filed a challenge in federal court. They contended that overreaching Denver politicians infringed upon their rights to bear arms.
Taylor Rhodes, Executive Director of RMGO, emphasized the group’s stance.
“Since the day this legislation was introduced we knew it was unconstitutional,” said Rhodes in a press release obtained by GunsAmerica.
“Under the Golden Dome, at the unveiling of this proposal, RMGO warned the bill sponsors this would quickly be struck down by a federal judge. Today, our crystal ball has become a reality. But it doesn’t stop here. We won’t stop fighting until every single unconstitutional anti-gun law is struck down,” Rhodes continued.

On August 3rd, RMGO set a TRO in motion, providing the State a deadline of Monday, Aug. 7th to answer. Chief Judge Philip A. Brimmer responded favorably for RMGO, ordering a stay on the law due to its “likelihood of success.”
Colorado’s legislation aligned with a federal statute. The latter already prohibits licensed firearms dealers from selling handguns to individuals below 21. However, this federal ban faces scrutiny, especially following the Supreme Court decision in NYSRPA v. Bruen.
This pivotal case led the Supreme Court to reject the previously followed “intermediate scrutiny.” The court shifted focus to the Second Amendment’s text, history, and tradition.
Conor Cahill, a spokesperson for Governor Polis, labeled the age disparities for gun purchases a “loophole.”
He told PBS, “The Governor is working towards his goal of making Colorado one of the ten safest states in the country — and the same age requirements for pistols and rifles would help support responsible gun ownership.”
As always, stay tuned for updates.

It’s getting ridiculous all the anti-2A laws that are being passed here in CO nowadays. Unfortunately this is just one of many that the far left has managed to get passed…it’s definitely pushing me (and many of the people I go to the range with) to start looking at moving out of the state.
If 21 is the ideal age, why stop there? Could these communists legislators not arbitrarily raise the age to 61?
Let me get this straight: you’re not mature enough to buy a gun til 21 but mature enough at 16 to vote,as some demcrats have proposed? (Actually in a twisted sort of way it makes sense-stupid people voting in stupid politicians)
