Non-Semi-Auto AR? What the Fox Unit Does that Mean? — SHOT Show 2022

in Levi Sim, SHOT Show 2022

Fox Unit LLC is making AR ownership possible in any state by changing the fundamental way an AR-15 works. One aspect anti-gunners use to mislabel these guns as so-called “assault weapons” is that they have semi-automatic actions which use the kinetic energy created by firing one round to load the next into battery, making it ready to fire again.

FU LLC’s X-1 rifle interrupts the cycle and locks the bolt open after each shot, leaving the next round unchambered.

This rifle overcomes many restrictive regulations by impeding the semi-automatic nature of the AR platform.

But, by just pressing their extended bolt release lever, the bolt is closed and it’s ready to fire again. This interruption of the semi-automatic cycle makes it legal in states where black rifles are banned.

The interrupted cycle also influences the recoil impulse when you shoot. It feels different than shooting an AR because the bolt isn’t rushing back forward with every shot. You may feel like the recoil is reduced, and it may help you shoot tighter groups.

The extended bolt release lever makes it simple to put the gun back into battery quickly.

The modification is done inside the workings of the action, so there’s not much to show in a photo at the range.

You can keep your hands in place, and with practice, it’s possible to become pretty quick and shoot multiple rounds per second.

It fits standard AR uppers and mags.

All you need to buy is Fox Unit’s lower receiver. It fits standard upper receivers and standard magazines.

You’ll find this non-semi-automatic lower at FoxUnit.net for $300. It’ll be available later in 2022.

These were suppose to be available for sale a year ago. What’s the update?

  • survivor50 January 28, 2022, 9:52 am

All I can say is I’ll wait for the the Black Powder Flint Lock version…

Until then these poor old standard models will have to do …

    • Jim February 14, 2022, 11:53 am

There is a Flintlock AR already out there.

  • Kevin Lankford January 27, 2022, 10:02 am

Heck with such stupidity,… just exercise your “Second Amendment” right.

  • Methane251 January 25, 2022, 4:37 pm

I like the company name “FU”.
Now the democraps are going to come out with a new law restricting the magazine capacity to one round.

    Let’s Go Brandon.

    • Derek January 26, 2022, 7:30 pm

Wow, you’re a special kind of moron.

      • fedup February 15, 2022, 12:23 am

What? Why…? How about trying that again. Only this time acting as an adult, and formulating a polite and cogent comment?

  • sfvshooter January 25, 2022, 3:31 pm

It’s unfortunate these types of firearms have to be introduced, but as a resident of CA and a firearms enthusiast, I’m all for any and all innovations that will get more firearms into the hands of those who want to defend themselves.

Having said that, I’m hoping SCOTUS will hear some of the lawsuits against Bonta (CA AG), rule in favor of plaintiffs, and send a clear message to douchebag Newsom that his overreach is unconstitutional.

    • katherine Cavalcante February 8, 2022, 12:04 pm

Woot woot sfv in the house!

  • Kirkstone January 25, 2022, 2:51 pm

And people in those states will buy these instead of using the money to get the laws declared unconstitutional.

    • Hondo January 29, 2022, 7:57 pm

You’re not too bright, are you?

The Semi-Auto function has been able to be turned off since Colt originally designed it. Yes Colt. Armalite never made or designed a Semi only AR 15.

It is even easier today. Simply replace the gas block with an adjustable block, then turn off the gas. Shabang you have a bolt action firearm. One may also simply remove the gas tube and plug the port. So if there is a outlawing of the semi-auto we all can make the AR 15 a bolt gun, after all it is a, magazine fed, rotating bolt, front locking lug, cock on open bolt action firearm at its heart. (so is the Springfield 1903)

Not saying it is right to outlaw semi-auto, just saying we can still enjoy Colts AR modular design within stupid laws. Being a Texan I dont see the need but if? We can adapt and overcome, no “new” design is required.

I guess what you are saying is true, but retracting the bolt each time using the charging handle would be laborious.
I think this product might work better if you could use your trigger-hand thumb to release the bolt.

If ArmaLite never made or designed a semiauto only AR15, then how/why did ArmaLite design in 1958 and market in 1959 to sportsmen a semiauto only AR15 as a hunting and target rifle?
The full auto selector switch was not added until 1961 when ArmaLite marketed the AR15 to the military after commercial sales didn’t reach expected numbers.
You really need to check your sources.

Move to free state and stop conforming to what the commies want or just get a bolt rifle.

  • Howard Ellsworth January 25, 2022, 9:33 am

Have you seen the Troy PAR, Pump Action Rifle? They claim to be legal in all 50 states.
It costs more since you have to buy the whole rifle but seems to be a better solution.

    • Big Al 45 January 25, 2022, 11:38 am

“seems to be a better solution”
With no experience with either rifle, how can anyone make such an assumptive claim??????
Now, I AM ‘assuming’ you haven’t, since you didn’t mention owning the PAR, and we know you don’t have the FU lower since it’s new.
So really, how do you make such a claim.
Why do so many gunnies INSIST on ‘dissing’ something new when they have no reasonable experience with it?????
I KNOW why, and it’s irritating.

  • Joseph Cremeans January 25, 2022, 7:59 am

People need to understand the phrase how stupid can you be, isn’t a challenge. Politicians want to restrict the rights of law abiding citizens but not punish criminals for there crimes. Bring back the death penalty for life sentences, along with chain gangs. Criminals have it to easy, jail is vacation for criminals.

    • dave danger January 25, 2022, 1:22 pm

To prove your point, our prison has prohibited visitation due to staff shortages. To compensate, they are providing free cable TV to their “guests”.

  • Noraad January 25, 2022, 7:40 am

Wonder if using the trigger to return the bolt, then fire on release, would satisfy ban state nannies.

  • Roger D January 25, 2022, 6:36 am

It will be interesting to see how those in banned States will respond to this new product. With a little practice I can see a certain degree of sustained fire.

  • Robert January 25, 2022, 6:27 am

    Abolish political tyrants, not firearms.

Every one of the State legislators in those states should be before citizen’s grand jurors on charges of treason facing the death penalty.

    • Paul Bodine February 19, 2022, 9:38 pm

Robert, I agree with your commitment but only if you include Trump in the treason & death penalty phase! Btw, I’ll even volunteer to throw the switch on that SOB … 🙂

    • Juan Kilyun February 19, 2022, 10:08 pm

Amen! And please include the past Presdnt T. in those treason charges. I bet he’ll glow bright orange in “the chair”.

  • Kb31416 January 25, 2022, 6:16 am

These guys are rather secretive about the secret sauce that makes it work, but my guess is that it is just a spring and detent under the bolt catch to keep it pushed up without needing the magazine follower. I looked at a stripped lower and there is not much space to put the required blind hole without getting into the magazine release bore.
I first saw them on Zuckbook about six months ago, but they have been quiet since then. Still interested, in an academic sense.

  • Draven January 25, 2022, 4:47 am

Not the first by any means. maybe the direct branded and sold as such, but there’s been a side-cocking one, one with a slide pump on the foreend , and one where you cocked the standard cocking handle between shots.

  • survivor50 January 24, 2022, 9:13 pm

How about a NEW and IMPROVED model with single round feed from the magazine only, by pulling the charging handle, fire, and pull the charging handle to eject the case, lock the bolt open, and load another single round in a FRESH mag ???

    Rinse and repeat as needed…

HOLY CARP !!! What HAS this world come to ???

  • linkman January 24, 2022, 5:40 pm

Eugene Stoner is turning over in his grave. This is an abomination and there are a bunch of laws that need to be fixed.

    • survivor50 January 24, 2022, 9:10 pm

I can hear a whirling sound from here…

    • Chris January 25, 2022, 8:11 am

That’s very easy to say if you’re from a free state. While I agree that the laws need to change, I think this lower is a great idea for our 2a brothers and sisters that live in less than favorable states

    • Dogman197 January 25, 2022, 8:27 am

Well, this is a good bandaid until those laws can be fixed. It will also pisses off the Left, so…..
