New sources reveal a Navy officer and a Marine engaged gunman Muhammad Abdulazeez during the terrorist attack in Chattanooga that left five dead last week.

While Defense Department policy prohibits anyone other than military police or law enforcement to carry firearms while on federal property, it appears Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White, the support center’s commanding officer, and an unidentified Marine used their personal sidearms during the encounter.

Reports indicate one of the Marines who was slain during the attack was carrying a 9mm Glock and used the weapon to return fire. However, it will not be clear whether White or the Marine hit Abdulazeez until an autopsy is conducted.

Abdulazeez’s attack left five dead, including Marine Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Lance Cpl. Squire K. Wells, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Sgt. Carson Holmsquist, and Navy Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Randall Smith, who died on July 18 from wounds sustained during the attack.
