Magpul on Glock PMAG 17 GL9: ‘Ok We Screwed Up’

in Authors, Industry News, S.H. Blannelberry, This Week

No two ways about it, Magpul Industries Corp. screwed up the initial release of the Glock PMAG 17 GL9.

It’s something they flatly admitted in a recent post on Facebook (see below). Don’t fret though, they’re going to make it right:

New for the GLOCK 19.

New for the GLOCK 19.

OK we screwed up.

After initial release of the Glock PMAG 17 GL9 a few days ago we started seeing random issues of failure to feed with the new magazine in other Glock models, primarily the Glock 19 and 26. Of all the challenges of building a Glock magazine with a single new composite, issues like drop free, impact strength and feed lip retention were foremost on our mind. The failure to feed came as a bit of a surprise to us and we immediately headed out to the range to investigate.

In short order we found the problem. Without getting into technical details, some small, but critical geometry changes did not make it into the initial production molds. We should have caught this but no failures showed up on our factory guns during live fire testing and flaws in our internal processes of checks/balances did not flag the oversight as it should.

So as I said before, we screwed up and here is what we are going to do about it.

Molds are being updated with the correct geometry as we speak and a replacement magazine body with the correct geometry should be available by May 4th, 2015. These will be date coded 5/15 or later and will replace any magazine bodies in service of earlier manufacture. Just use your existing spring, follower, and floor plate with the new body.

  • If you purchased your magazines direct from Magpul, Brownells or Midway, you do not need to do anything, replacement magazine bodies for the magazines ordered (1 for 1) will be shipped to you automatically.
  • If you purchased your magazines from a gun store, replacement bodies will be sent out to the store in question for you to pick up.
  • If neither of the above works for you then Magpul customer service will handle the replacement directly.

In short, we are updating ALL of the affected magazines released as quick as we possibly can.

This is exactly why I purchase MagPul products whenever possible. Anyone can make a mistake, it’s what you do after that that makes the difference! Good for MagPul!

    I can vouch for Magpul’s customer service. Its great! Other companies should take a hint from them. I recently purchased a butt stock from Command Arms Accessories for my M-4. The lock pin to adjust length of pull broke for whatever reason. I called CAA to inquire about a replacement, and this was their response;
You will need to send the stock back, proof of purchase has to be sent and we will process you for a return authorization.
Really? It should not matter that I purchased the product, or was given one. I have another of their butt stocks on another M-4 that was given to me. Will they require a proof of purchase for that stock too? How about just telling me the pin will cost “X” and send it to me.
At least you get great customer service with Magpul on top of great products! Told CAA I was dumping their butt stock in the garbage and bought myself another Magpul butt stock to replace it!
Keep up the good work Magpul!
    Pat.

This IS the reason, we only purchase Mag-Pul magazines for our rifles. Their corporate ethics and integrity are well in excess of anyone else(or combined) companies out there.

Hell, moving out of Commirado was all they needed to do to prove where their hearts are, great company, now if some of the others would do the same, vote with your feet!

Awesome integrity! Thank you Magpul, this reaction demonstrates true leadership.

I always believed in using the factory mags. My experience with the quality of aftermarket magazines was questionable issues of quality. Since those days, I have tried several aftermarket mags from different vendors, although not for a Glock.
In my current experience, I have had good luck with aftermarket mags for the AK, AR and 1911.
I am glad magpul stepped up and owned this. I can see more Magpul products in my future, when needed.

Thanks Magpul for not treating us shooters like cash cows to be milked of every dollar.
    You have earned another customer.

I like to see a company stand behind their products. If only Promag Industries would do the same as Magpul.

I beg to differ! At least half of the Promag magazines I’ve bought (2) work correctly half the time. Promag doesn’t need to stand behind their magazines, they need to cease production.

Okay, perhaps I was a little rash and harsh. Another option would be for Promag to fix it’s known unreliable feeding issues across various different offerings. I run mine in a Ruger PC 4 carbine only at the range because I can’t trust them for home defense. I also personally know several people who use them in other platforms with similar results. Reliable feeding is obviously my top priority in a magazine and they are lacking in that regard, IMHO. I believe they are known to function well in some applications but am leery of using them due to my past problems.

Hey, don’t feel too bad then, at least your Pro-mag magazines will actually go into your mag well. The one I bought worked great twice, then, suddenly and without reason, it started hanging up inside the well when I would attempt to insert it. Not wanting to0 force it. It went into the old bit bucket. No thank you.

This is what a great company does when there is a mistake. Kudos for Magpul! Many other companies should follow your lead in handling a simple mistake. Doing the right thing vs. trying to cover it up to save $$$….what a novel concept. Maybe one day the US Govt will figure out this is the way to go….but I doubt it.
