Video released Thursday shows an off-duty Chicago police officer shouting “I’ll kill you” before fatally shooting a man who allegedly grabbed for her gun during a struggle in Washington Heights on the South Side last month.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released the private surveillance footage on Thursday. The video shows Leevon Smith arguing with a group of people just before 1 p.m. on Jan. 18.
It then shows the off-duty police officer attempting to diffuse the situation while urging everyone to “calm down.” The officer spoke with Smith for just over a minute before the situation escalated to a physical altercation between the two parties.
According to an arrest report, the unnamed cop told responding officers she witnessed “a verbal argument,” before the shooting occurred. While trying to handle the situation, she said Smith grabbed her from behind and reached for her gun “in an attempt to disarm her.”
The report states that the two fell to the ground while struggling for the gun, after which the officer opened fire, hitting Smith in the abdomen and left hand.
The officer can be heard yelling “I’ll kill you” before firing two shots.
“I told your dumb— I’d kill you,” the officer says as she fires a third shot. You tried to steal my f—ing gun. I don’t give no f— about him. He just tried to rob me.”
Smith can be heard saying “Baby, I’m sorry. … I don’t want to die.”
The officer then yells for someone to call the police while continuing to scream at Smith. The video shows no evidence of the officer offering aid to the wounded man.
When emergency personnel arrived, the officer is seen walking into the building and then back out while on the phone. When asked where she had hit Smith, she replied, “I don’t know.”
“F— it, I can’t believe this just happened to me,” she said while explaining to first responders that she was cop and Smith had tried to steal her “off-duty gun.”
Smith was taken into custody and later pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center on Jan. 20.
According to a tactical response report, Leevon Smith posed an “imminent threat of battery” even without a weapon and physically attacked the off-duty Chicago officer. The report states she was ambushed with “no warning” and fired three shots.
The officer was treated for a laceration above her right eye at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, according to the arrest report. She joined the police force in June 2022, according to records. The officer has not been formally accused of wrongdoing and her name has been redacted from reports until an investigation is completed.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released a 911 call that appears to capture the initial interaction between Smith and the group of people before the shooting.
“Just give me my bag back, bro,” someone is heard saying in the background of the call.

In another call, someone else tells a dispatcher that an attempted robber was being held for police by the victim. The shooting is reported in multiple, separate 911 calls.
“There’s a lady outside with a gun and she shot somebody. … She’s going inside with the gun,” one caller said.
The officer eventually called 911 herself and reported that she shot Smith as he tried to rob her. “I’m trying to call my bosses, but ain’t no one answering for me,” she said.
Cook County prosecutors approved felony charges against Smith, according to the arrest report. However, they will not be able to pursue counts of attempted robbery or aggravated battery because Smith passed away the next day.
Currently, the charges don’t appear in county court records.
Smith’s estate filed a $10 million lawsuit against the city and the officer on Feb. 3, claiming that the officer used “excessive and violent physical force” and “knew or should have known that such force was not necessary in light of the circumstances.”
The suit claims that Smith’s “estate was diminished by virtue of the medical and funeral expenses that were incurred,” adding that his family “suffered injuries as a result of his death, including, but not limited to, the loss of companionship and society, grief, sorrow and mental anguish.”

When an attacker gets what they deserve for accosting a victim, the family should not be allowed to collect compensation from the victim or the controlling government at that time. Agree with previous statement that we need a law that states this and abide by it with no exceptions. This person should not even be considered for any charges against her. We need more news stories reported where “GOOD GUY takes out bad guy. Maybe this society will finally wake up and quit assaulting the GOOD CITIZENS with their useless anti gun legislation which only encourages these criminals. Chicago is a prime example!!

There needs to be laws that prevent families from making any financial gains from the death of criminal family members. If you raised a criminal or are to married one and they die because of their criminal activity you should have no way benefiting from it.
The truth is that the world is a better place with one less thug in it.
A much bigger guy tries to forcibly rob a handgun from the rightful possessor of the handgun, who is a much smaller woman. The two people struggle over possession of the handgun. The rightful possessor of the handgun manages to shoot the robber. Does society think that the rightful possessor of the handgun should have simply surrendered possession of the handgun to the robber? THAT, very likely would have lead to the robber shooting/murdering his victim.
Never let a thug get your firearm away from you! He will most likely shoot you with it. She absolutely did the right thing. She will live another day, and he will be where he belongs!

Officer may be criticized for failing to give aid to the criminal she shot. However, it appears the perp was still a danger to her had she made close contact with him. Wonder how much money the dead Cop would have received had the Butt Maggot gained control of her gun. Very Little. If the governments have to start handing out millions every time one of these Shit Hooks is killed committing a crime, then they should also have to hand out millions to each victim they fail to protect.

Off-duty officer or not, to threaten and accost a victim, poses risk to a perpetrator; though likely not considered beforehand.
I think the phrase goes “Play stupid games,……….”.
It’s incredibly easy to find not an ounce of compassion for the family members. Maybe they’ll find another sacrificial ‘spare’ to capitalize on.
