Last week GunsAmerica published a story about Project Unloaded, a relatively new anti-gun organization whose sole mission is to convince the masses that responsibly exercising 2A rights is a terrible idea because, without exception, “guns make us less safe.”

“The mission of Project Unloaded is to create a new cultural narrative that guns make us less safe,” the website states.

This week, GunsAmerica has to challenge the founders of Project Unloaded to defend their raison d’etre in the context of the following defensive gun use (DGU) story.

ValleyCentral.com, a local news affiliate covering the Rio Grande Valley region in Texas, reports:

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hidalgo County deputies say a man was arrested after breaking into a home Tuesday night and attempting to get into a woman’s bedroom where she was hiding with her children. The woman, however, had a gun, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said. Identified by law enforcement, Carlos Garcia, 36, was found by deputies in an open field with a gunshot wound. He was medically cleared and then arrested on a charge of burglary of a habitation with intent, the sheriff’s office said.

The local sheriff’s office went on to say, “The homeowner warned Garcia that the police had been called and she had a gun. When Garcia refused to leave and continued to try to get into the bedroom, the homeowner shot once through the door.”

Wounded, Garcia then fled the scene.

While the investigation is ongoing and the story is still developing, based on the available facts, how can anyone argue that this mother and her children would have been better off if the mother was unarmed in this situation?

Project Unloaded also states on its website, “The more people who choose to be unloaded, the safer we make our world.”

That’s utter nonsense. As John Spence once said, “If you expect the world to be fair with you because you are fair, you’re fooling yourself. That’s like expecting the lion not to eat you because you didn’t eat him.”

Violence is a universal language. Not everyone speaks it, but everyone understands it — including predators.

Those who celebrate being nonverbal, that is, those who proudly refuse to muster the appropriate tools of self-defense and the requisite levels of force in the face of predation, are doomed to be victims.

Thankfully, for this Texas mother and her children, she chose not to be a victim. She chose not to be “unloaded.” Rather, she chose to be an armed responder. And, unquestionably, they were all safer for it.
