As we step into the new year, I wanted to take a minute to review a couple of smaller ticket items that have really grown on me. Often times we get lost in the newest whiz-bang guns and optics here on GunsAmerica Digest and forget about the smaller stuff that really helps us day-to-day. Or makes our chosen weapon work that much better for its intended purpose. I have had some great luck recently with some stuff that won’t break the bank but will help you on the path.

Rigid Molle Panel

First up is the Rigid Molle Panel (RMP) systems from Grey Man Tactical. This is one of those products that seems so simple you can’t believe it wasn’t thought of before. And then you get one, and it is even better than you imagined. For our testing, we got two samples. One is backpack sized, and one is seatback sized, and share similar features.

For the backpack, this makes all kinds of sense. Available in a huge variety of sizes, they have one to fit nearly any backpack you own. And it is exactly what it says. It uses the ingenious MOLLE webbing system but in a hard polymer rigid format. So any pouches or mag holders you own mount right up. Which is awesome in a bag. What normally happens when you pack something like a bug out bag? You have a bunch of small stuff that is heavy, and likely most important. Such as pistol magazines, a blow out kit, or maybe a range finder/ mini bino. Then you have a bunch of stuff that takes up space, like a poncho liner, socks, shelter half, the like. It seems like no matter how you pack it, a few miles into the journey all the small stuff is on the bottom. And when you need it, you have to yard sale the entire bag’s contents onto the ground to find it.

The RMP solves that. It lets you organize the back panel just like you would any other MOLLE platform, keeping all the important stuff locked firmly in place. The rigidity also helps keep it organized, and the panel won’t slump over as a regular pack would. At a price from $40 to $75, this one is a huge win.

The vehicle model is just a larger version, with attachment straps for the headrest and seat bottom to keep it in place. And it has optional hardware like a rifle holder to keep your expensive optics from bouncing around in the floorboard. I particularly like that it is so easy to take on and off. If you just want to use it for the weekends, and not leave it in the truck while you are at work all week, it is a simple matter to remove. They do make a cover for it as well, which does a pretty good job of camouflage for day to day stuff. If we find ourselves in Mad Max world for 2021, you will be very glad to have one of these around.

Viridian HS1

Viridian HS1

If you watch the channel with any regularity, you know I am a fan of both visible lasers and handstops on SBR’s and AR pistols. So it is with much pleasure that I can tell you Viridian is making a product that is both. New for this year is the HS1 Green laser hand stop, which is plenty visible for both daylight and low light use. Why do I love lasers so much? I can sum it up like this. In real gun fights, people move. And your eye is going to be naturally drawn to whatever it is you need to shoot. It’s pretty cool to have an aiming device that paints the target, in a manner that you can see both. Can I prove it works? Ask any Special Operations guy what percentage of tangos he shot with an IR laser vs his sights. Principle is the same here, it just works daylight or night.

small, but useful

The HS1 is a well-built device that directly attaches to M-LOK slots. It has an easily accessible battery compartment that doesn’t require you to remove the laser. Zero is a cinch, though it does require a very small Allen wrench (included). It is also instinctive to use, with the activation switch exactly where your front finger naturally grabs. I do wish the activation button was a smidge larger, it can get lost in the crease of your finger depending on grip. But all in all, it works like gangbusters. And at $179, it won’t break the bank.

N8 Tactical Holsters

Same mag holder, Sig 9mm and XDM 10mm

N8 Tactical has brought two products to market that are pretty cool. They have been in the holster business for a very long time, and specialize in quality products that you don’t need a trust fund to buy.

perfect for any smaller gun

First up is the OT2 IWB holster. It features a leather backer, adjustable cant, and a two week try it guarantee. But don’t a lot of other holster companies do something similar? Yes, but I didn’t mention the twist. The OT2 is a multi-fit holster, using a core of Neoprene to form fit a wide variety of guns. That means multi-fit, with zero screws or hardware to change. Got a P365 and a G43? Cool. Now you can carry either one without a second holster investment. This is HUGE!

Professional IWB

The second is The Professional IWB. Once again leather backer, but this time a polycarbonate firearm specific pocket. Which is fancy talk for it only fits one gun. Why is this different? Because of something you can’t see from a cursory glance, a retention system.

Retention bump

While I was initially skeptical of the twist to draw movement, I do see the value. It is instinctive and takes just a little time to learn. But the value is huge. Have you ever tried to run with your CCW holster on? I have, and on at least one occasion it popped out and skidded across the street. In fact, I got into the habit of making my students run a baby obstacle course with all their toys when I taught low visibility ninja courses. A gun that won’t stay put is a big problem. N8 has solved that in a unique way.

That is our wrap up for the month, I hope we have given you some things to think about. If you have suggestions for next time, drop them in the comments below.
