While at NASGW this week, GunsAmerica’s managing editor Laura Kovarik spotted the “Snake,” the double-barreled AR from Gilboa.
Introduced back in 2014, the Snake definitely roused some interest but due to the original design it had to overcome a hurdle before it would be ready for primetime.
There was a single trigger system that fired rounds through both barrels simultaneously. This was problematic because it was classified as “machine gun” under the NFA. One pull of the trigger can launch only one round — not two, according to our ATF overlords.
Gilboa has since fixed this compliance issue by installing two triggers. Shooters can still fire two rounds off at once, but they have to pull both triggers to do so.
Gilboa has showcased different versions of the Snake over the years, with barrel lengths ranging from 9.5-, 11.5-, and 16-inches. What’s been consistent on all the model is that they have ambidextrous controls and are 100 percent compatible with standard AR parts.
For those of you who’ve been tracking this rifle, we’ve got some great news. It should be available this December! Just in time for Christmas.
The MSRP is expected to be $2,200-2,400. To learn more, make sure you visit the Gilboa website.
I can’t believe how many people on this site are worried about what the left thinks. The left are gonna what they want. They don’t need anything to oppose what they don’t understand. Be strong in the belief in our Constitution. If we worry about what offends these ignorant nit wits we’re beat already. To get back to the article I can’t afford that rifle and really don’t like the idea, but if a gun enthusiast uses it legally. I’ll defend his right to own one.
So. Dumb.
Many moons ago, back in the late 80s early 90s there was double barrel semi auto/select fire rifle was advertised in shotgun news. It ever hit the market but a select fire prototype was made. The barrels were not side by side but over and under and the lower barrel was shorter than the top one. When in full auto one could activate both barrels, and in semi it was top barrel only. The top barrels was longer for better accuracy in the semi mode. I not certain but I think that one had duel magazines. In any event it never saw the light of day even though the inventor was working on a semi only version. I don’t recall the name of it.
Ahh, has anyone realized that the “left handed” AR now exists on this device?
Take off the left side and 10% of the shooters have a good excuse to shoot an AR.
Can you imagine a bump fire stock on this puppy??????????
I think I’ll grab a roll of duct tape and tape my two side by side double barrel shotguns together. Than I’ll have a useless Toy to play with! Just more ammunition for the anti-gunners to have a field-day with.
Wasn’t this done with a 1911?
Yes it is called the 2011
i need one in 300 blk left side and 556 nato right side
I could do that with 2 AR-15s and a roll of duct tape…
The Dems heads will explode when they get a look at this.
Reminds me of the double-barrel pump shotgun Moe Szyslak of “The Simpsons” keeps under the counter at his bar. Whatever happened to nice, smooth rifles, such as the Model 1907 Winchesters, and slick handguns such as the 1910 Browning? At Cabela’s we had to place special caps on the flash suppressors of some of the tactical rifles to keep customers from cutting themselves. Many of the AR pattern rifles are loaded down with jagged edged rails and mounts for gadgets. I’d be reluctant to touch one off for fear of shredding the palm of my hand. The first question that comes to my mind is “How long will this thing hold up in the real world”. Or will it fall apart like that cool-looking, but totally junk Turkish tactical shotgun a friend of mine just had to have?
…but it doesn’t take Glock mags.
Kind of neat to offer something different. I have to say I do like my double barrel Standards Arms DP-12 12GA. Be interesting to see one on person and try it.
Idiots buy stuff like this. It can’t be accurate…it’s twice as expensive to shoot…you need long fingers for two triggers…a large wallet…and a small brain!
Why exactly can’t this be accurate? This rifle isn’t my thing but that’s an ignorant comment. This being double barrel and double trigger has nothing to do with its accuracy. Separate bolt carrier with a separate bolt locking into a separate barrel/breach interface. Explain how that’s any different than a normal AR-15? If anything, its probably slightly more accurate due to the upper being so wide and having more rigidity. I hate to tell you, but the gun industry is fueled by unnecessary things. Buyer demand makes them necessary. This is a company offering something interesting for a niche group of buyers. There is nothing wrong with it. Different strokes for all kinds of folks. Why are gun enthusiasts so divided and so against anything not a $499 AR? Its sad, it really is.
Only one barrel can be “accurate”. Pure physics will dictate that the second barrel will be off, if only by an inch or so. Even the worlds most expensive double rifles, one barrel is dead on at 100 yards, the other is slightly off. Again, just an inch or two high/low, left/right. For me, I like one ragged hole at 200 yards. An inch off is not “accurate”. But, are we splitting real world hairs? Because an inch at 100 yards is still gonna hurt.
Hi there. I’m an engineer. Let me just say there is absolutely nothing in physics that insists one barrel be more or less accurate than the other especially when both barrels operate independently of each other. If you care to see the proof then watch the Dems narration videos of this gun hitting targets at 100 yards with both barrels. Thanks.
ahh ur just jelous because you dont have any monet to buy one. waaaaa
No matter which side you shoot from you get brass in your face. Good design.
Never heard of a brass deflector have you.im not military but they don’t have left handed rifles. Lefties shoot a rh rifle and aren’t getting brass in the face.
As my local gun store owner would say, “just more silly junk with no future!”
It’s kind of cool looking but, really, what use is it? Other than to upset Liberals (of which I am one, in spite of my being an Arizona gun nut. I just hate Trump.)
Proof that the 5.56 is a GIRLY Round….
Go .30 Caliber if you want to Win the Fight!!!!
5.56 A girly round, I agree. .30 cal being more manly, I disagree shoot a 7.62x54R then come back and say the same thing that’s a caliber that a real man uses no sissy .30 cal or 30-06 for me no thank you
7.62×54 is .30 cal pretty similar in performance to .308, 30-06 has higher velocity can shoot higher pressures and has vastly more choices in loads. The 7.62×54 is a decent round but the 30-06 is superior to it.
How is that proof of a girly round
TARD
I agree with Ralph (Oct 20th). No practical purpose for civilian use. In the field, who wants to carry that much weight and ammo? It’s a novelty.
IMO, Slick marketing to sell a ridiculously stupid design.
The gun serves no purpose but that snake finish is sweet!
Many people say this weapon has no purpose but it doubles the ammo carried on the gun itself and it is also putting two rounds down field with every trigger pull, effectively doubling your chances of hitting your target. Even if the second round is less accurate, you still have a higher chance of hitting your target; consider perhaps your first “accurate” round was off target, then you have a second “inaccurate” round which may hit the intended target. I think this will be a great new addition to any arsenal provided it is reliable.
If it fed from different magazines, I could really see a use for it. As it is, the advantages of having multiple barrels – such as overheating – are really better served by other platforms than the AR.
If it had different magazines and were chambered in .410 on one barrel and .308 in the other, I’d lay down some coin for one today.
Utter foolishness. If you want one, by all means buy it, but I’ll pass. It’s the American way.
Yep
Oh look! Nifty! Now moving along….
Your mad your small
What is the purpose of this weapon/ Is it to excite Nancy Pelosi?
What in the hell would be the purpose of this weapon?
The underlying meaning of this weapon is an effort to introduce parity with the heavily armed government entities It should be embraced by civilians.
If someone needed one of these I would reply just get a rifle in a bigger caliber. Larger caliber semi-autos and carbines come in 7.62 X 39, .308, 300blkout just to name a few. A single barrel semi auto has a sufficient sustain rate of fire therefore I don’t see how a double barrel is going to be an improvement especially in semi auto only. Also at approx. 10 lbs. without any accessories and the barrels being off center compromising accuracy what is the point of this other than a gimmick. Owning one of these is proof of in membership in the dork of the month club.
Not enough room between the barrels for two suppressors to be threaded on….maybe integrally suppress both barrels and I’d be interested. NAH!
There is an old saying, “Just because you can do something does not mean that you should. “S
That having been said, this does seem like we are looking the bees next of gun-hating libs. While I would like to say screw ’em, I would rather not give them something to go postal over. We have a hard enough time trying to keep what we have from being ruled illegal and then taken from us. I happen to agree with others who have stated that the next time that we see this will be on the evening news following some massacre, whether that weapon was actually used or not.
That was supposed to read bees nest, not bees next. Frigging spell check.
I think it is a little overboard. We don’t need to tease these already brain dead control freaks. I am comfortable with my rifle and will never surrender t to these control idiots without death on my part. Everybody can see the government’s motive. Our weapons are the final step to slavery or population killings by our government elites.
More, useless and unnecessary, firearms crap!
Civilian parity with government forces. Wake up a bit.
Even the government isn’t stupid enough to buy this…..
I served 2 tours in Vietnam and we would only fire in full auto to lay down surpressing fire to make the enemy lay down so we could get a better position because we had limited ammo and when you are fighting for your life you don’t want to run out. The is just for the oddity of it, no practical purpose
Agreed
Will I need two bump stocks for this or just one?
This is a good comment. Well done MagnumOpUS.
Thank you!
God bless you.
(just stumbled upon this article from another one, forgot that I had left a comment) 🙂
Ya. It looks dumb. So did the Edsel. And, the first submarine. And, several motorcycles. And, a huge number of knives in an assortment of novel and seemingly unnecessary configurations. But, hey! Let ’em build whatever they want. This is capitalistic America where spreading wings and pushing the envelope of creativity has been a way of life for over two centuries. Somehow, left wing nut-bars have largely castrated at least two generations of boys and girls to the point where they’re scared at the very sight of a gun. Any gun. The influence is stifling. So, why be hyper-sensitive about a new build and how it might affect anti-gunner rhetoric? Screw ’em. Let ’em whine. In a previous world where people were self-reliant, anti-gunners would be dead meat. In our present culture where needs are met and most are well-fed, they’re nothing but a nuisance.
The next time we see this two barreled wonder will very likely be on the news, either because of another mass shooting, or because it’s being presented to congress as an example of why we need stricter gun control!
Exactly what I was thinking….not every invention is necessary for us to enjoy our sport without inventing needless scrutiny
I know it is always the gun with its on volition that is out there killing people, and we should get rid of these self driving cars, and let’s bring back Alcohol Prohibition while we are at it. We can save allot of lives by controlling their every movement. This is not the America that I want to live in.
Bring the gun to a free market – if there is a demand for it – the company will sell it, if not it will dwindle away – the is now capitalism and the 2nd amendment were meant to be interpreted – “Shall not be infringed”
This gun in black, or one extremely similar to it has been on the cover of a Facebook group page for years… it’s not new. And please stop being so timid or we are going to lose all of our gun rights, They didn’t get any restrictons passed after Sandy Hook and ATF/NFA is going to have a hell of a time going back on an almost what?? 10 year ruling that bump stocks are legal… This “lets not show them anything that looks black or bad” crap is beginning to get to me. I’m glad I already have enough for me and my future great grandchildren. Sandy Hook was enough for me. When prices came down I bought plenty. I feel sorry for all of you who have to panic buy at ridiculous prices or worry about every potential ban.
I just might get one of these and work the barrel mounting system to have them both dead on with one sight….. I wonder if I can fit two Surefire 60’s or 100’s on it to further piss off people.
It’s not a matter of what is prudent or needed… It’s America Samir (apologies to Office Space)… I can get whatever I want that’s legal now. Oh yeah… flamethrowers are legal in Alaska, my local NFA dealer has some for under $1,000, Now if you want to talk about a useless item to piss off the anti-gunners then this has to be it. I already put $500 down for mine….
Lets see, how can I feed the frenzied anti-gunners with more craziness to use against us? I know, I’ll put two barrels on a rifle that they love to hate, and just dare them to start restricting normal AR’s because of it. Next, I will add four more barrels in a cluster with six very thin triggers stacked alongside each other – hey that ought to get the attention of even Republican legislators! Are we our own worst enemies?
I like the idea of a 6 barreled model with thin triggers stacked tightly together, do you have a prototype?
I do not need a double barrel AR. I do like the snake camo though, it would be a good camo for fall hunting in Maine.
Give me one good reason for this Bullshit.. All it does is give the liberal gun hating crowd more ammo. The gun industry is going out of their %$&%$&%$ rabbit ass mind and I think if the NRA supports crap like this they are doing the SAME THING.
Does SlideFire make a stock for this?
It’s got one helluva big buffer tube
Another solution to a problem that doesn’t exist…if only it had twice the rails so the Mall Ninjas would have more room to hang shit off of.
Good Lord how much this thing weigh? I would rather have a good .308 or heavier caliber AR style rifle to pack the extra weight around. But hey if it excites some folks more power to em!
I think it is a little overboard. We don’t need to tease these already brain dead control freaks. I am comfortable with my rifle and will never surrender t to these control idiots without death on my part. Everybody can see the government’s motive. Our weapons are the final step to slavery or population killings by our government elites. A gallon gun should be legal. It only fires one shot at a time. But you can turn the handle as fast as you want.
. . . this is really so out of hand now – that I’m starting to think that the Fucking Lefties are inventing this crap just to tarnish us! Please stop this crazy nonsense!
Well stated. This isn’t innovation, it’s pure stupidity. And as we all know, you can do more with accurate shooting than volume, generally.
It’s an Israeli design if I’m not mistaken.
haha…”useless as teats on a warthog” but my be fun it you got $ to burn….
Yep, A screen door on a submarine is more useful!
Crazy! This is for the younger and the stronger folks. My DPMS LR SASS kick like a mule as it is. I can’t handle two barrels, for sure. We already do have side by side and over and under beaten to a pulp. Better to invest your hard earned money on finer of these two, IMHO. You would likely get a better return on them, down the road.
It’s just a really pricey novelty, so what. If you want one and can afford it then go for it! I have no inclination to buy one but – for the time being – it’s a free country, manufacture on!!!
I like the unusual! If I had the $ I’d buy one.
Same here – that and one of the double-barrel 1911s.
Well, this is one to drain your wallet ammo wise. Why on earth would you need a two barreled rifle?
Rediculous!
Really stupid.
‘Need’ is a dirty four-letter word anti’s like to throw around. You don’t need more than 10 rounds, you don’t need this or that. I’d be careful bandying that term. Just cause you don’t like it and think its silly doesn’t give you the right to determine what the rest of the USA needs. Just my two-cent. I don’t really need more than one or two guns, but that hasn’t stopped me from accumulating more than what I really need. How many guns you got? How many do you need?
Yes, but we also don’t NEED to give the anti-gunners examples of how ridiculous we all are, and why they need to regulate our dumb asses!
The AR is like the small block Chevy, everything that could possibly be done has been done, anything beyond that is just ridiculous fodder.
That’s what they said before TBI! Lol!! There’s always room for improvement!
I think this might qualify as a big block
Why not 3 barrels.
Oh, give ’em time. Someone’s probably working on it . . .
Make one of them a .410 barrel or 20#….just because
REALLY…
Wow it’s a good thing that they didn’t make a bump stock for that one. I have to say this is a very ridiculous idea. Just like the double 1911.
Now if it was less than $1200 it might be a novel idea.
