During a brief detour at SHOT, I wandered by the booth for MSP, or Mounting Solutions Plus. MSP both distributes and manufactures firearms accessories. While talking there, they showed me some new products for the Mini 14.
Ruger’s rifle is a well-loved firearm and enjoys a loyal following for its rugged reliable properties. Many people love the traditional look of a wood stock and blued barrel. It’s also just a light and handy rifle for many as their “truck gun”. And for some, it’s the only legal semi-auto .223 rifle for civilians in states that ban rifles such as the AR-15.

The one complaint I used to hear was that the Mini-14 was that there were no accessories for it. With the exception of mounts for a scope, they aren’t nearly as modular as say, an AR-15. They also had simple sights, with little to no ability to upgrade them making their accuracy somewhat problematic.

I found that MSP has worked to rectify that. They carry numerous stocks, mounts, and accessories for guns. They have a whole section for the Mini-14 with everything from stocks, mounts, to whatever you want. One mini-14 at the booth was all “tacti-cool” with an expanding style pistol grip stock that even has a bullet drop computer mounted to the side.

That aside, the most interesting thing I found was their new mounting system for a muzzle brake / flash suppressor. Usually, the front sight of the Mini is held on as part of a collar that is pinned in place on the barrel. What MSP did, was create a collar to replace the original Ruger one, with threads at the muzzle end. These threads are standard AR muzzle device threads so…you guessed it, you can mount a standard AR flash suppressor or muzzle brake to your Mini 14. It will also accommodate other accessories to the muzzle, such as an adaptor to hold a suppressor.

What is more, the system also has an integral dovetail to attach a front sight for the Mini with options for white dots, fiber optics, etc. They use a sight similar to the M-14 setup, which is well known for its accuracy. This one item alone enhances the Mini 14 to a huge degree with quality sights for well places shots.

I asked MSP what prompted them. They said there were all number of adaptations for the Mini-14, but few were of high quality. He looked at the problem, and decided to create something that used an already established system (the AR-style muzzle devices…). He found someone who could fabricate the collar and put in a dovetail to take the Mini-14 style sight. There you have it.
If your Mini-14 is in need of the TLC, or some dressing up, look at the MSP group.

It has been 2 years since the article on MSP muzzle brakes for the Mini 14 – still no products. How long is ASAP?

  • Ernie October 13, 2012, 5:32 pm

Well here it is October and still nothing on their website. Another good idea down the drain. I wish that these companies and Gunsamerica would make sure their products are available at time of publish so we, the readers are not disappointed.

This is a shot show article so that would be impossible. the whole point of shot show is to show the world exclusive product and hope that wholesale orders come in. Many products end up dogs and never come in to the market for sale because the interest in them was just not strong enough.

Well, it’s two months later and there is absolutely ZIP on that website that was claimed. So much for them, what a red herring that turned out to be. Good one guns america for leading me down a blind alley.

forget the mini-14 I would love the fiber-optic front sight on my mini-30!

  • mike February 7, 2012, 5:02 pm

These are new products. It may take some time for them to show up on their website. Take a breath, if they showed them at Shot Show, they will have them up ASAP.

I also went to the MSP website. All i can find is an “Eagle Ruger Mini 14 Muzzle Brake with HK Front Sight” and even that’s sold out. Am i looking in the wrong place?

  • John R. February 7, 2012, 2:14 pm

It’s a muzzle brake, not a muzzle break.

  • Michael February 7, 2012, 12:59 pm

Went to the web site and NO muzzle breaks for the mini14 shown

There’s a gunsmith who has been doing barrel threading and other accurizing for the Mini14 and others for many years. I’m sure he could also install these for you – http://www.thegundoc.com

Just want to add a good word for Gundoc. Several years ago he shortend my Mini’s barrel, did a fabulous trigger job ligtening the touch, and installed a great top rail for my AImpoint MilComp sight. I had already installed a samaller gas port bushing that he makes out of some super tough material. You just can’t go wrong with him!!

@jamesbe I don’t believe that they are selling flash suppressors for the mini-14. It appears the article states they are/will be selling a mounting system to install *AR* suppressors. May want to contact the company and see if they have pricing info on the mounting system.

  • jamesbe February 7, 2012, 9:34 am

The MSP catalog doesn’t show the flash suppressors for the mini-14. You sure you were at the right booth?

  • Henry February 7, 2012, 8:47 am

I have a new Mini 14 in 6.8. I like the idea of the fiber optic front sight. Can I just get a sight to replace the factory sight or do I have to get the barrel thread? I am also looking for a replacement rear receiver sight. There is no dove tail in the reeiver just a block that the sight screw into. Are there any replacements available.

    • Chase February 7, 2012, 9:23 am

      Henry,
There are aftermarket rear sights available, such as the one from Tech-Sights. Great quality parts that don’t require tools to adjust, and they actually have “click” adjustments.
