Whoever told you the hollow base in civil war bullets was to hold powder is an idiot. It is hollow to enable the skirting of the bullet to expand to better engage the rifling for accuracy. By the same token whoever told you the Enfield bullet is supposed to fly base forward is even more of an idiot. The Enfield was one of the most accurate rifles of its time. That would not have happened if the bullet had been fired base forward.
