A worker at a New Orleans East store thwarted an armed robbery earlier this month by shooting two suspects, killing one and injuring the other.
The incident occurred at Sam’s Meat Market and has sparked conversations about self-defense in high-risk situations.
According to the New Orleans Police Department (NPD), the two suspects entered the store with guns drawn, demanding cash and taking merchandise.

Security footage provided by store manager Diaa Hamed shows the worker initially complying, raising his hands before seizing an opportunity to retrieve his own weapon. The worker fired multiple shots, striking both suspects.

The juvenile suspect succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Teony Juarez, was arrested at the scene. Juarez now faces four felony charges, including armed robbery and aggravated assault.
Police confirmed that the worker will not face charges. Hamed, who was not present during the incident, said the event has left staff shaken but unharmed.
“They were really scared. That’s why they used their guns. We all carry guns, but we hope not to use them,” Ahmed explained.
The NPD emphasized that the worker’s actions were in self-defense.
