People survive being hit multiple times with a .45, while others drop after one shot from a .380. Shooting well, with a gun you will actually carry, is more important than some “energy number.”

In some cases, officers allowed perpetrators holding edged weapons to close to 10 to 12 feet before drawing. Some were injured. Their rationale? They feared the shooting would be ruled unjustified if they fired on a felon at too great a distance.

In a previous article, we examined whether you should disclose you are carrying a firearm when a law enforcement officer detains you for a traffic stop.  Generally, the advice was that you should voluntarily disclose you are carrying even if the law does not require you to do so.  A logical follow-up question is: If you voluntarily disclose that you are carrying, have you given permission for the police officer to search you or your car?

After carrying for most of my adult life, I have concluded that what most of us really need is simply a solid, reliable gun that we can shoot well and carry comfortably.
