Canadian Prime Minister Pushes 'Assault Weapons' Ban Following Mass Murder

Less than 48 hours after a killing spree in Nova Scotia that left at least 18 people dead, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for tighter gun control laws, including an outright ban on “assault weapons.”

“I can say that we were on the verge of introducing legislation to ban assault-style weapons across this country,” he told reporters, according to the Washington Post. “It was interrupted when the pandemic caused Parliament to be suspended, but we have every intention of moving forward on that measure, and potentially other measures, when Parliament returns.”

Authorities have not disclosed the type of firearm the mass murderer used or how he procured it. It is clear, however, that the suspect had been planning the attack for weeks and that law enforcement failed to stop the threat in a timely manner.

Rod Giltaca, chief executive of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights, told the Post it was too soon to debate guns.

“Just shy of 24 hours past the tragedy in Nova Scotia, the gun-control lobby is leveraging this community’s suffering for their own political gain,” he said. “No law in this country could have stopped a madman with this level of determination and resources.”

The suspect began his killing spree around 10 p.m. on April 18th and was not apprehended until around noon on April 19th. Law enforcement was first alerted to a “firearms complaint” at the home of the suspect’s former girlfriend and her boyfriend. When they arrived, they found the bodies of both victims but no murderer.

After it became clear that a mass murderer was on the loose, police began advising local residents to lock their doors and stay in their basements, according to the Associated Press.

The suspect evaded authorities in part because he was driving a police cruiser and wearing what looked like a police uniform. A neighbor of the suspect told CNN that he had recently purchased two used police cars.

“His ability to move around the province undetected was surely greatly benefited by the fact that he had a vehicle that looked identical in every way to a marked police car,” said Chris Leather, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police chief superintendent and criminal operations officer in Nova Scotia. “He was wearing a police uniform which, as I say, was either a very good fabrication of or actually a police uniform. That surely contributed to his ability to circulate.”

After leaving his ex-girlfriend’s house, the murderer began randomly pulling people over and executing them. He also knocked on people’s doors and killed them in their homes before setting the homes on fire, according to a source interviewed by the Toronto Sun.

In one incident, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Heidi Stevenson rammed the suspect’s car, but she was subsequently shot several times. The suspect then pulled Stevenson out of her car, executed her, and took her firearm and magazines. He also burned the car he had been driving and took her car, according to the Sun’s source.

Police finally caught up with the murderer at a gas station and shot him to death. The source claims he was still using Stevenson’s gun in the final shootout.

Authorities have not released what they believe to be the suspect’s motive.

Firearms, especially semi-automatic rifles and handguns, are already difficult to purchase in Canada. The process requires sixteen hours of class time, extensive background checks, membership in a shooting club (in some provinces), application for a license to own a handgun, firearm registration, application for a license to transport a firearm, and a requirement to store the handgun locked and unloaded.

Canada also limits magazine capacity for self-loading rifles to five rounds, though police officers are not subject to the same restrictions.

Really, I thought AR-15s were ALREADY banned in Canada! With Justa’ Turdo’ leading the place too Hell, I was under the impression that he had already disarmed all of the victims! What can i say? My Canadian friends keep RE-ELECTING the very crooks who are leading them too the slaughter-house! What a shame!
On the other hand, we have PLENTY here in the U.S. who are doing exactly the same thing! Just look at Michigan, N.Y. and Californication! (Too name just a few!) Tragic.

  • michael wong April 24, 2020, 9:15 pm

It is sad that Canada is becoming more and more like us here in the US.
What a shame, used to be such a nice, peaceful country.

  • Capt. Steve April 24, 2020, 6:23 pm

Fine by me, less to deal with if we invade.
Try that here you already know what will happen, and with (really) 700,000,000 guns in the USA and the ability to manufacture and cannibalize–any effort would be met with a Civil War, of that there s no doubt in my mind.

  • ENIGMA6 April 24, 2020, 4:34 pm

Interesting soyboy Justin wants to ban assault weapons but the police won’t share withe the public what sort of firearm was used. Wondering if the dirt bag used some sort of plain vanilla firearm to kill his girlfriend and then the Constable, then used her firearm after that.
PS, Justin. You sound just like American Democreep politicans who call for “assault weapon” bans after mass shootings, only to discover the weapon in question wasn’t an “assault weapon”.

  • Jordan Sutich April 24, 2020, 4:15 pm

Not positive, but pretty sure if people had the ability in that country to conceal carry it would or could have helped. It’s the epitome of sheep to slaughter. More to learn here than just taking rights away.

    • michael April 25, 2020, 6:19 pm

I don’t know their existing laws seemed to have worked so well. Why not add a few more ?

  • Jacques Poirier April 24, 2020, 3:14 pm

I am a legitimate Canadian gun owner. Most Canadians don’t even know about what the gun laws are. That is what our also uninformed Prime Minister is using to further his political career. Keeping people misinformed to take away guns from legitimate gun owners. We are pictured as criminals. In an interview with one of our pro-gun group, our public safety minister showed that he didn’t even know our present gun laws. When he felt cornered he said that the interviewer said that guns owners would shoot at police if there was gun confiscation. The interviewer confronted the minister with replaying the recording, that he never said anything in that regard, that the minister had just made it up. That is when the minister decided to terminate the interview. Trudeau and his bunch of minions have kept making stuff up, lying, to be able to take away gun from law abiding citizens. We have plenty of gun regulations but they are thrown out in court. Criminals get away with gun crimes. Legitimate gun owners are the bad guys. Trudeau was just waiting for an incident to come down with more gun laws. His real agenda is having Canada gun free and then have all the power on every Canadian citizen. The RCMP was releasing very few details, releasing only what was allowed by our federal government. Only what helps the government to come up with further gun legislation. They cannot even define assault rifles. AR-15 are limited to only 5 rounds which is no different than a Remington 742 hunting rifle.

    • michael April 25, 2020, 6:22 pm

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to find out he may have been a former officer. Or relative of.

    • Christopher Chason April 26, 2020, 7:49 am

Right you are. Hell, I thought ARs were ALREADY banned in Canada!!
But they keep RE-ELECTING the same crooks that are selling them down the river!

  • rsmalt April 24, 2020, 2:34 pm

Leave it to Prime Minister Zoolander to exploit such an incident to bolster his agenda. He’d make an outstanding DemocRAT here in the U.S.

  • John April 24, 2020, 1:40 pm

When the gun is at fault, punish it…but don’t EVER look to the humans who don’t care about your ban and will continue to use guns of all kinds to commit crime. That’s why they are called “criminals.” Let the law-biding be armed! One armed citizen could have ended this.

  • Larry April 24, 2020, 1:25 pm

Our 2nd Amendment can’t stop liberal and RINO politicians from banning weapons and imposing ridiculous laws so, I guess Canadians don’t stand a chance of fighting back against this nonsense.

    • Obama's boyfriend April 24, 2020, 3:37 pm

Gun grabbers who boast of their intentions openly have short political careers. Contrary to popular belief only moonbat infested areas support gun controls until reality hits them and they are then defenseless as is NYC today. My heart bleeds for these losers. The same applies for LA and Chicago.

We are about to see Virginia go full bore Republican thanks to the gun grabbing gestapo tactics of these gauleiters. Over 90 counties have told Richmond to pound sand. Gun sales are way up to over 2.9 million monthly, more than the combined militaries of the US, Russia and China combined. People do not buy guns to have them registered nor surrendered.

Of course Canadians combine the worst of the UK and France, so were talking about pig ignorant cheese eating surrender monkeys here, and the fact that they elected this queer demonstrated how debased and debauched they are. My guess is unlike the Australians and New Zealanders they will comply.

Americans have steadfastly spit in the eyes of the gauleiters over this issue and their are both more guns and gun owners than there were in 1970.

  • pete April 24, 2020, 1:08 pm

Canadians are generally kinder, wiser, and smarter than Americans. Sorry, but we could use more of that here in this country where our love of guns (myself included) means our level of gun carnage is an acceptable price to pay for private ownership of massive firepower. Despicable.

    • The Bearded Pretender April 24, 2020, 2:25 pm

Give up your rights and guns if you want to Moron..
Americans NEVER will just to become Sheep led to slaughter.
Trudeau is a Dumbshit that paid $8 Million to and American Murdering Terrorist.
Why is it that when these people go on a killing spree, they always kill the wrong people?

    • Obama's boyfriend April 24, 2020, 3:41 pm

Pete speaks like someone who has bent over and served Obama and his ugly Canadian cousin well and often. Clearly those who would sacrifice of your freedoms have another agenda in mind that doesn’t indicate a better future for mankind. The sniveling servitude that slaves display in their cringing displays to those that abuse them is strong in Pete, but it often is in the mentally unbalanced.

    • FriFri April 24, 2020, 3:57 pm

It is not a matter of “our love of guns” at all. It is a matter of gun laws not preventing tragedy. Even if all guns disappeared from this world, other methods of carnage would be employed by the evil people hell-bent on doing harm, and typically, the number of casualties are much higher when mass murderers choose alternate means of destruction. It is much bigger than “gun rights”. It’s is a right of the people to use the means they see fit to attempt to correct severe injustices when the authorities designated to do so may not be able or willing to do so.

    • Rick April 24, 2020, 8:27 pm

Apparently Canadians ARE NOT wiser or smarter. They elected soy boy Trudeau to be their leader. Brilliant!! Now, his solution to this heinous tragedy is to take away rights, as in the right to own the very tool you need to defend yourself against psychos. SMART, real SMART! LMFAO!

  • Chastran April 24, 2020, 12:56 pm

Hey, Trudeau, don’t forget to ban all assalt shakers in the land of the midnight idiots. Sodium can kill!!

  • Nic April 24, 2020, 12:43 pm

So, they haven’t even named the weapon he used and they automagically want to ban “ASSAULT” weapons. How have they defined an assault weapon anyway? Black guns? A/R’s? Scary? Anything shooting 5.56 or 7.62 x 51? Their complete and utter ignorance about guns comes rolling forth when they start their rants. What they are proposing not only makes no sense but once again, there was no negative reaction pointed towards the shooter himself. The gun must have magically overpowered his brain in its desire to kill people. There is no conversing with liberals. They all grew up in a big city where the only people with guns were criminals, cops and movies. They have absolutely no understanding or desire to have a gun themselves so they are totally cool with taking away everyone elses rights. What a joke!! Stand up for yourselves Canadians. Some of the best wilderness and hunting in the world and they are going to take away your rights without an ounce of remorse or an ounce of knowledge.

    • Et April 25, 2020, 12:10 am

“They all grew up in a big city where the only people with guns were criminals, cops and movies. They have absolutely no understanding or desire to have a gun themselves so they are totally cool with taking away everyone elses rights.”

I swears you could be talking about that wonderful city and county in commiefornia, L.A. You could be describing the dominant cultural demographic there where the majority come from socialist countries south of the border. They live in a cognitive dissonant world.

  • KenA April 24, 2020, 12:13 pm

Correction, the police did not warn the public about a killer on the loose, if they had it would have saved lives. They said they where considering it only hours after the killer was shot. They won’t even disclose the types of weapons used. So much for our secret police force, Leary of revealing stupidity.

    • Obama's boyfriend April 24, 2020, 3:43 pm

It appears this firearm was legally obtained. Worse the maniac was dressed as a police official. Guess the Canadian “gun free zones” didn’t work out. Wonder why? Wonder if my Corona free virius zone will protect me?

      • Et April 25, 2020, 12:13 am

The beer virus won’t affect you as long as you stay away from beers like Corona.

    • john m April 24, 2020, 4:43 pm

Exactly! This is why citizens should be able to protect themselves. Tell me how banning any type of gun will a) keep them from criminals; b) make law-biding people safer?

  • Pat J April 24, 2020, 12:09 pm

Well, thanks again LEOs. You show up at my door at 3AM because you mistake my place for some meth-head with a similar number address somewhere else. I can’t believe your badge or uniform because it might be fake, the cattle dogs are going nuts, I can’t tell you to go turn the cruiser light bar on because I can’t believe it’s a legitimate LEO vehicle. You start getting huffy, and I’m supposed to keep that red dot off the door.

  • John Harmon April 24, 2020, 11:37 am

I’m 74 years old. Own a few guns of different types. Some of them for many, many years. Guess that I’ve been lucky. None of them seem to be assault weapons. They have been in the safe and never got out and assaulted anyone. Don’t be a fool and break into my house. They have all promised to protect me.

    • Obama's boyfriend April 24, 2020, 3:46 pm

Remember as the Leftards free felons and imprison people for praying, SCOTUS has repeatedly declared that the police have no obligation to defend you. Yet the government wishes you disarmed, while its officials demand security details 24/7.

Remember Leftards love you and wish you the best. The Gauleiters told you so.

    • john m April 24, 2020, 4:45 pm

No one legally owns an “assault gun.” Your government doesn’t even understand the basics of firearms yet they are going to “regulate” for YOUR safety! Sounds like the leftist fools in the US.

  • Bob April 24, 2020, 11:34 am

Here in the great white north we Canadians have NO RIGHT TO KEEP & BEAR ARMS, NO RIGHT TO SELF DEFENSE ETC AND WE ARE TOLD THAT IN ANY SITUATION WERE ARE LIVES OR THE LIVES OF OUR LOVED ONES ARE THREATENED TO “CALL THE POLICE”. THIS TRAGEDY IN NOVA SCOTIA IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WERE THAT OPTION WILL GET YOU. AS OPPOSED TO “LIVE FREE OR DIE” THE CANUCK MOTTO IS “PEACE, ORDER AND GOOD GOVERNMENT” IN MY OPTION THE LATTER IS A GOOD SLOGAN FOR AN INSANE ASYLUM WHICH IS WHAT CANADA HAS BECOME UNDER TRUDEAU.

  • Captain Dave April 24, 2020, 11:29 am

I’m American born but I spent 17 years of my adult life living in Toronto Canada. In all of that time, I met one ex-cop who owned one or more handguns. No one else that I met ever even considered owning or purchasing a gun. Canadians are brain washed into believing that the police will protect them, end of story. I have never seen a gun store, or even a store that sold ammo and I’ve traveled coast to coast, twice. As the author stated, it’s a difficult process and the procedures following are absurd. What would be the point in buying a gun and locking it up as required, whereas it becomes a memento in a basement closet or the like? You can’t even compare gun ownership in Canada to that of the USA. There is no right to bear arms, or to self protection, or to stand your ground in Canada. However, I now hear tell that criminals are acquiring and using guns for crime, which may awaken at least a few people to the fact that they have no means to defend themselves.
If you visit Canada, bear these facts in mind. Also, if you think the cops are there to protect you, just remember that they do have guns and that they know full well that you likely don’t, so expect to be treated differently than you would at home, where you have rights.

    • jim April 24, 2020, 3:29 pm

Canada actually has a very high rate of gun ownership. I think they were 11th or 12th in the world per capita last time I looked. I’d Google the exact number, but don’t really care. 🙂

    • Obama's boyfriend April 24, 2020, 3:48 pm

Well if one man can take out 19 people I’m pretty sure the Canadian police are a highly sophisticated and effective organization on a par with the Mayberry PD.

    • john m April 24, 2020, 4:48 pm

Police WOULD protect you if they COULD protect you. Once it’s time to make the call to 911, it’s far too late to be protected. They then show up to clean up. Imbeciles.

  • Greg April 24, 2020, 11:07 am

So, if you already cannot own magazines for a semi-auto larger than 5 rounds currently, what are they planning on banning? Single shot “assault weapons”?? bolt action “assault weapons”

What is currently legal that they don’t want to be legal in the future?

Pretty sure murdering police to take their better weapons is already illegal. Similar to Sandy Hook where the insane person murdered his mother in her sleep with a 22lr (savage rifle) to access her .223 (bushmaster XM15) for his killing spree.

    • Pat j April 24, 2020, 4:48 pm

And then saved the American taxpayer a shit-load of money with a G20.

    • john m April 24, 2020, 4:51 pm

Size of magazine has nothing to do with the type of weapon, i.e. “assault” rifle. An assault rifle, so-called, is a weapon that can be turned into to a fully automatic weapon when one pulls the trigger once. I would venture to say that no one in Canada owns a true assault weapon. The only assault is on your right to self preservation. Criminals give to craps about gun laws!!!!!!

  • Michael A Keim April 24, 2020, 10:56 am

So far there has been no mention of the type weapon he used. The police did say he had no license to own a weapon and the weapons were illegal. So the shooter wasn’t stopped by any of the existing gun laws or the fact that mass murder is illegal in Canada. I would like Trudeau to explain how another gun law would have stopped this.

    • john m April 24, 2020, 4:54 pm

So you’re saying that a criminal used an illegally owned weapon to commit a criminal act and your government’s wise response is to punish the non-criminals? Time to get your protest on! Don’t protest gun restrictions; protest stupid.

  • Stan d. Upnow April 24, 2020, 10:12 am

“Firearms, especially semi-automatic rifles and handguns, are already difficult to purchase in Canada. As their national anthem starts out…….. “Oh, Canada…”
Exactly what the idiot Progressive-Socialists want for America.

  • joefoam April 24, 2020, 9:44 am

Amazing that politicians continue to believe that gun control laws will change anything. Or is it the billionaire funding to brainwash the ignorant into believing that it will?

  • Midakis April 24, 2020, 9:26 am

Crazy, the guy is crazy! So I’d the PM and all anti gun advocates. Guns don’t kill, people kill. So what, disarm all citizens and have the government armed. History shows how well that works. Even with guns they force us into everything they want to impose on us. Why are guns so intimidating to them. Why do they react irrational at every chance. Might as well ban police cars, police uniforms, he used the officers gun. Ban the police guns too. No, that’s not the answer. The problem is the spirit of the age we live in and the meds they put people on. Not to mention the virtual world we created with video games etc and no more human interaction; instead text text text text. People are desensitized and there’s no value to life. It used to be that a story like this would shock a nation. Not anymore. It used to be shotguns but I never heard of anyone calling for a ban on a shotgun. What’s the difference? All our control of society if possible.

  • Alec Peirce April 24, 2020, 9:08 am

There are numerous blatant mistakes, untruths if you like, in this article which could easily have been avoided with 5 minutes of research.
To state that firearms are harder to get in Canada is one example. Illegal firearms of any sort are easy to get. They just require a lot of money. Unrestricted firearms for the average person (meaning law-abiding) are easier to get than in the USA – PROVIDED one has the necessary PAL. There is no waiting period or Federal check as in most US states which can add at least hours and sometimes days to securing a legal firearm.
In Canada, with the necessary PAL, one can pay for and walk out with a firearm as easily as buying candy. Even buying a restricted firearm, a handgun, is faster than in most US states.
Semi-automatic firearms are also easy to get legally. Many firearms, rifles, shotguns or handguns, used for legal purposes (hunting, other than handguns) are semi-automatic and as easy to purchase as a boy’s first 22. Semi-automatic simply means that no input from the shooter is required between shots. That describes hundreds of legal firearms.
The Canadian system is as close to perfect as one can get. The owner of the firearm must be trained in safe use and checked to ensure no history or likelihood of firearm abuse.
I am a firearm owner for over 60 years and can see no way to improve upon it.
I agree that the average person has no need for assault rifles and restrictions on them are justified but the definition of an assault weapon must be clear. Looks have nothing to do with it. Looks don’t kill!
If the author, supposedly a firearms expert, was trying to create the impression that Canadian firearm law is sufficient, his intention is good but the truth is better.
Rather than bamboozle the readers, prove your point!

    • Walleye April 24, 2020, 10:56 am

Alec, your comment “I agree that the average person has no need for assault rifles and restrictions on them are justified…” Who are you agreeing with? Justin Trudeau? Michael Bloomberg? Hillary Clinton? Joe Biden? Josh Sugarmann?

How do you know what anyone else might “need”? Many people, like me, live in rural areas and feel that an AR15 is absolutely necessary for protection. Many small business owners in urban settings (think L.A. King riots of 1992) feel an AK47 is absolutely necessary to protect them and their businesses.

Unreasonable gun control advocates like you are easy to spot, especially when you tip your hand tell us what we “need”. What anyone else needs is NONE of your business.

Assault pistol? Assault shotgun? Assault knife? Exactly which “assault weapon” does Monsieur Trudeau want to ban next?

  • Kaniksu Kidd April 24, 2020, 7:57 am

It is obvious he WAS NOT using an AR or AK because if he was this fact would be headlines all over the leftard media. White guy killing white people with “conventional” firearms. In the USA this story has sunk faster than Joe Biden’s memory,

    • Walleye April 24, 2020, 10:59 am

Grate point Kaniksu Kidd! The U.S. media did a stellar job burying this story primarily because it fails to fit into their narrative of demonizing “assault weapons”.

  • Rob April 24, 2020, 7:28 am

It makes no sense to punish the law abiding citizens just because some a-holes misuse a gun. With that mindset; if someone drinks beer and decides to drive and kills someone, where’s the outrage to ban alcohol or certain vehicles?

    • Stan d. Upnow April 24, 2020, 10:17 am

Guess you don’t understand why the focus on banning guns. Read history; then you’ll know why.

  • Leighton Cavendish April 24, 2020, 7:09 am

So…did he actually have or use an “assault weapon”:? What is their definition of an “assault weapon”?
Anything used to assault someone is an “assault weapon”…knife…rock…bat…bottle…etc etc etc
If they want to ban all guns…just be honest and say it.

  • David April 24, 2020, 6:04 am

    • Mac April 24, 2020, 9:28 am

Ok…. you sell used police cruisers o him, he buys weapons and uses them to kill, the police officer (God bless her) rammed him unsuccessfully, took her gun and mags, shot more people, then finally had shootout with police with police weapon and ammo. On top of this mound of ineptitude, the police had been warned, didn’t respond, two more deaths. All I see is one police mistake after another. You are going to have to eliminate police cruisers as it was an accomplice to the tragedy. So, innocents die due to poor reaction and control of this whole killing spree. We in US have seen this story over and over again and it is the fault of legal gun owners. BS!! Folks, they want to have complete control over us. Look at China…. if the government doesn’t fear the populace, you are like pigs led to slaughter!! Pls tell me from a gun rights point of view how did he violate any law in obtaining weapons and police cruisers? None… bought police cruisers legally, bought no bad bad assault weapons, … shall I go on?! Even if he did have assault weapons, sounds like obtained legally as press made no big deal of it. They want you to assume it was assault weapon that did it all!!

  • Bobs your uncle April 22, 2020, 10:54 am

A crazy guy politician reacting to the actions of another crazy guy and making new rules for those that have committed no crimes, makes perfect sense in Canada

  • Mark N. April 22, 2020, 2:09 am

From the sound of it, he was NOT using an AR or AK style rifle, but the shotgun and two pistols he had licensed, plus the pistol he’d taken off of the officer he’d slain. So of course the push to ban something that was not involved in the crime makes absolutely no sense…but what else is new?

    • John Rogers April 24, 2020, 10:36 pm

Yup. Governor of my state did the same BS. Caught a kid planning to shoot up a school with a shotgun, so we get laws against bump stocks, and magazine capacity limits on rifles and handguns. WTF? Well, because the politicians have to do “something”, right? Whether it would have made a difference or not doesn’t seem to matter. Damn them all to hell.
