As state legislatures across the country convene for the 2023 session, ASA is already working to defend against statewide suppressor bans in two states – Virginia and New Mexico. If this feels like deja vu, that’s because ASA already helped successfully defended against a ban in Virginia in 2019-2020. In New Mexico, Sen. William P. Soules (D-37), has introduced SB 171, which would outright ban the “manufacture, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer or acquisition of… mufflers, silencers or devices for deadening or muffling the sound of discharged firearms.” ASA will be in Santa Fe on Monday, February 6th, to testify in opposition to this bill in the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee.

In Virginia, Del. Dan Helmer (D-40), introduced HB 2240, “prohibiting the sale, transport, etc., of assault firearms, large-capacity firearm magazines, and silencers.” ASA testified in opposition to the bill on Thursday, January 26th, and the House Public Safety Sub-Committee voted 6-4 to “pass by” or table the bill indefinitely.
Make no mistake, ASA will remain steadfast in combating any attempt to ban, confiscate, or further regulate suppressors at the state and federal levels.
Update: 2/9/23 New Mexico Suppressor Bill Defeated!
On Monday, February 6th, ASA President Knox Williams testified in the New Mexico Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee in opposition to Senate Bill 171. .
Immediately following Knox’s testimony, Sen. Soules offered an amendment to delete the provision banning suppressors. The amendment was adopted by a bipartisan 6 – 1 margin, thus removing the suppressor ban from SB 171.
Even as amended, SB 171 is a draconian and unconstitutional bill that needs to be stopped. The American Suppressor Association will continue to keep tabs on legislation in New Mexico, and is prepared to come back to Santa Fe to fight any attempt to ban, confiscate, or further regulate suppressors. Protecting your right to own and use suppressors is our top priority!

Suppressors are hearing health devices. In many countries in Europe I have visited, they are over-the-counter items in hardware stores. Why they are part of the NFA is an anathema.

I have been shooting since before I was able to hold up a gun. My dad would put my gun on a rest and tell me to aim it and then pull the trigger when I was ready. The 2A is a Right! A personal right, and if they don’t want a gun, then they don’t have to buy one.
If they don’t want a suppressor, then they don’t have to buy one of those either. Biden and all those others who want to take my right, can dive in the shallow end of the pool, because, as I already stated, the 2A is a right and shall not be infringed!!!!!

Seriously?! Suppressors, because of the difficulty of their initial acquisition in the first place, are about a common as a child’s tricycle on an interstate highway. Of course, the anti-gunners will take ANY victory in their quest to make us all victims of crime.
