It is hard to break down and buy a .22 caliber AR rifle. Big boys like their toys to go boom, not pop. Unfortunately though, the ammo crunch of 2009 went right into 2010 and we haven’t entirely come out of it. In fact I don’t think we will ever see the price of .223/5.56 ammo come down to where it was. But even at 10 cents a round where you could still buy it back in 2007, regular practice gets expensive pretty fast. To master basic muscle memory you really need to pull the trigger a lot, and without any recoil, muzzle flash and concussion, the .22 makes it easier to develop good shooting habits instead of bad ones.
Armalite just introduced their new .22 caliber M-15 carbine and, as .22 cal ARs go, this one would be for the shooter who takes their AR and their proficiency with their AR seriously. It isn’t a toy that looks and works kind of like your AR. This is your AR that has been re-engineered for the .22 caliber rimfire cartridge instead of the .223 Rem./5.56 Nato cartridge. It has a correct .224 bore, not a .223 bore, so it should be more accurate than a standard AR with a conversion kit for 22LR ammunition. This is a high quality gun for serious shooters. It would be a lifetime purchase as a training rifle or learning rifle for your child. And don’t forget, you can shoot all day for less than $20. Hopefully we’ll be able to do a full review of this gun in the near future. I bet it is a tack driver at 100 yards.

Good point, but my Arm M15 lower came with an 5.56 upper attached.

You guys bashing this rifle….. you did know you can drop any AR-15/16 upper assy on it and shoot .556 nato, right? So you can go from 22LR to .556 in about 3 minutes, with the same lower hardware.
Nice looking firearm but it is a little pricey for a 22LR. The MSRP is more than I paid XM15 Bushy. Might consider just an upper if I can find one at a decent price. Rather teach with a 22LR than shoot up my reloads.

SOOOO…. I went out with my buddy who has the .680 rounds, not sure exactly but it was a bigger round than the mitary uses and mine feels like a pee shooter now. Still great for what I got it for, in home self defense, but I get it…
I just got one, and as the admin said, for those of us who just want a little cheap target practice and to have around “just in case” you can’t beat it.

Can’t some company grow a pair and come out with something groundbreaking; a .22 G36? .22 AUG?
I don’t think either of those would be up to ArmaLite, which makes both comments somewhat irrelevant. ArmaLite makes ARs, and with all the jokers in the field making .22 ARs, those will use them for competition and to protect their lives will welcome practicing with a true .22LR AR.

Why doesn’t Armalite bring back the AR-180B but this time with POST BAN features like the original AR-180?
Better yet, since they have 75% of the parts… why not make a L85/SA-80 using AR-180 parts as the foundation? Seriously, does the world really need another M4-gery? NOBODY makes an L85! It’s mostly an AR180 internally… just some plastic and sheetmetal to complete it and BOOM, one of the most exciting rifles made in the US!
Yea… just another .22 M4… wake me when something new and exciting comes out.
