Springfield Armory XDS Single Stack .45ACP Micro
The new XDS from Springfield Armory. As a single stack, 5+1 45ACP, it is unrivaled for firepower and concealability.

It was a shock to shoot an ultra-compact, tiny, .45ACP pocket pistol and not have it be an unhinged feel to it. The XDS is a truly engineered pistol and extremely manageable.

This little dude is only 4.4 inches tall but feels like a much larger pistol when you shoot it.

Springfield Armory XDS Single Stack .45ACP Micro
This is the first single stack pistol for Springfield in the XD line. If you already carry an XD or an XD(M), the XDS is the perfect backup because the controls are the same.

The Springfield bay at the range today was one of the most busy. The XDS could be the biggest story of SHOT Show 2012.

George shooting the XDS for the first time. Everyone who shot this gun today was amazed at how easy it was to shoot. The .45ACP is sharp in a 21 ounce gun, but nowhere near unmanageable, and of no real hindrance to follow up shots.

The only thing missing from the XDS is the striker cocked indicator. It has a fiber optic front sight, and it is one inch thick, making it perfectly pocketable. I havne’t seen what XD gear the XDS will come with, but I hope it is a pocket holster.

The XDS is a game changer in the concealed carry market. I am going to try to get them to make one with a heavy, revolver style trigger pull, which I would consider the ultimate pocket pistol ever created. Stay tuned. This is not the last you will see of the XDS on the GunsAmerica Blog!

Springfield Armory

So far the biggest story I have seen at SHOT Show 2012 is the XDS from Springfield Armory. It is a single stack .45ACP that holds 5 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. The barrel is 3.3 inches, and the overall length is 6.3 inches. It is only one inch thick. Empty the XDS weighs 21 ounces, and it is a striker fired pistol in the tradition of the XD and XD(M), with a polymer frame and forged steel slide.

I don’t know how many times we need to say that Springfield Armory is always raising the bar, but Springfield Armory is always raising the bar. Last year at SHOT Show about a half a dozen companies came out with single stack 9mm ultra-compacts. Over the past year they have all come into the market, with mixed reviews on most (our favorite was by far the Walther PPS). This year some of those guns have now been released in .40S&W, and it is common for 9mm and .40S&W to share the same frame in pistols. But when you want to make a pistol that small in a .45ACP, you have to go back to square one and make a whole new gun, and that is what Springfield Armory did.

I have had three small .45ACP guns over the years and carried them daily at different times in my life. The two i used the most were the AMT Backup .45 in a double action only, and the Para P-10, which is a double stack 1911 with a two finger grip. Both guns are steel, and what they both share (yes i still have them) is that when you fire them, you feel like your whole world comes unglued and you are just holding on for dear life. Likewise a compact 1911 I had for a while. In a small gun, the .45 ACP is a hand cannon, and I have always thought that it probably just wasn’t suited for a pocket sized gun, even though i insisted on carrying one. Gun guys don’t always make a lot of sense.

Shooting the XDS has changed my opinion on ultra-compact .45 ACP forever though. As I stepped to the line to shoot it today, I cringed to think of what I was going to experience shooting a .45 ACP in a light polymer pistol. Was i going to drop it? Then I shot the gun, and that whole unglued thing isn’t there. In fact it isn’t even unpleasant to shoot. George Whebby, who you will see in the video we did today for the gun, said the same thing. You expect an unpleasant recoil and muzzle flip, but there is none to be found. We both had to shoot it again just to be more aware of the actual ergonomics of the gun, instead of just bracing for unpleasant recoil. Don’t get me wrong, .45 ACP in a small gun is still a handful, but there is a difference between very manageable the barely manageable I had expected. The XDS is very manageable.

This leads me to think that the XDS is potentially the first truly engineered .45 ACP ultra-compact. My AMT Backup was made by a company that didn’t make it and was eventually liquidated. The P-10 is just a P-14 with a shorter magazine well. Neither gun was engineered in a cad cam world by computer modelers to estimate what the shot dynamics of the firearm would before it is ever brought to become an actual product. The XDS was engineered for the .45ACP, and from what I am told from Springfield, the resulting XDS we hold today far exceeded their expectations. The XDS is night and day with those old steel .45 ACP pocket pistols. The XDS is nothing short of a game changer.

You are probably already familiar with the XD and XD(M) pistols from Springfield, and though this gun has everything in a much tinier package, you lose almost nothing from a usability standpoint with the XDS. All that is really missing is a striker cocked indicator in the back, and of course there are less bullets in a single stack magazine than in the double stack magazines of the XD and XD(M). Otherwise all of the features on the gun are the same as the full sized guns (though the parts are not at all interchangeable). The grip texturing, the magazine release, the feel of the slide, and the grip safety are all the same as the full size XD and XD(M) guns.

If you have been looking for the ideal gun for concealed carry in a front pocket or inside the pants holster, I have to admit that this gun has most likely changed my vote for the best gun. As late as two weeks ago i convinced someone who had been set on a semi-auto that a revolver was the way to go for front pocket carry, but I’m not so sure anymore. This gun is like carrying a fire breathing dragon, but with a bridle and saddle so it does what you want when you want it. It is tiny, light, and extremely resistant to corrosion due to the polymer frame and the a Melonite salt bath nitriding process on the steel that never breaks down. A .38 Special revolver just isn’t in this class, nor is a .380 or 9mm pistol.

This gun was kept a complete secret until today at SHOT Show Media Day at the Range, so we didn’t get an advance gun to test, but hopefully we’ll get one soon and put it through its paces. I watched world champion shooter Rob Leatham shoot it for our video today at 10 yards on 4 inch wide plates, three magazines in a row, and he never missed. The XD(M) guns are scary accurate, and I suspect that this XDS is going to be much the same. Springfield has got some world class firearm engineers working on their guns and as we have said many times here at the GunsAmerica Blog, they are second to none, regardless of price. I expect this gun will be a huge hit, and stay tuned to see if a bigger story at SHOT Show 2012 comes up, but I think the most memorable gun this year is going to be the Springfield Armory XDS.

Bought my .44acp xds last week. have put 200 rounds through it. No jams or any issues whatsoever. Comfortable to shoot, my wife fired two or three magazines worth and had no trouble with recoil. accuracy was good. stripping and reassembly was a snap. Hides well when carried. I am very happy with my purchase at this time.

  • Lt Col (ret.) C Thie November 4, 2014, 9:25 am

Purchased XDs single stack 45 ACP. Occasional jams, stovepipes, and light primer strikes, same w 4 types of ammo. Returned to factory. When returned the first 50 rounds had three light primer strikes (3 rounds did not discharge). I can never trust this weapon and will be trading it off, as returning to factory a second time is not an option for me. I own other Springfield rifles and handguns, they are very reliable. I am extremely disappointed with thus weapon and the factory, I doubt that they read my letter enclosed with the weapon. I have been a ‘gun nut’ for 50+ years and have never sent a weapon back to the factory until now. I prefer Springfield over Glock due to the Springfield grip safety. But now I carry a Glock, it works every time. Confidence in your carry weapon is mandatory. These comments are factual and not biased, but from a disappointed long time Springfield customer

The problem you are having is with your striker pin. The striker pin more than likely has a burr on it

    • Calvin leger July 17, 2017, 1:58 pm

I have the same problem. I bought mine this year n out the box its failing to chamber and misfire! Called the company they said they couldnt do anything for me!! Really made me made since i paid 620 for the gun and cant rely on the damn thing! I got a s&w 1911 thats 16 yrs old thats more reliable than it. Then i cant even sell it cause no one wants the damn thing!

  • Anyman July 19, 2014, 2:46 am

Recall gun has the worst trigger I have ever experienced in a handgun; SA basically ruined the gun as far as I’m concerned. Will never buy another SA product ever! Disappointed.

  • James2train April 21, 2014, 7:12 pm

Got it back from recall on Nov. This beast is very accurate sweet trigger…fun to shoot. It’s always by my side.

  • Joe Littlejohn March 9, 2014, 10:27 pm

Y’all must have a different gun than I do. Got the XDs last wk. & was only able to get 3 rds. through it. The 1st shot was ok but the trigger pull was hard: 7lbs???. should be around 4 for a striker fired. Recoil & grip bite were the worst I have ever experienced. 2nd shot was worse & the 3rd actually hurt my hand. 3 rds. is not enough to judge a gun by & haven’t had a schnce to try it since. I felt the grip was actually cutting into my hand. I describe it as a very viscious piece to fire. Does someone make differend grip for this little beast? Comfort & concealability are superb but actual discharge of the weapon is punishing to say the least. I currently carry it IWB & it rides very well. Hope I can get used to the kick. I have always had .45’s & consider it the optimimum self defence rd. Also, do not shoot w/o muffs @ the range; the bang is worse than any flash-bang. Forget about rapid fire & quick target realignment! By no means is this a pleasant gun to shoot. I’ll probably shoot it enough to get used to it & practice occassionally; but this is definately not a fun gun. It is strictly for business & if the shit ever hits the fan, I hope I’m carrying my Taurus on my belt.

  • Tom February 11, 2014, 1:32 pm

Just picked mine up last weekend,Can’t wait to fire it..

  • georgevansant January 21, 2014, 4:16 pm

I have a XD40 Subcompact and love it, fits right in my pocket w/9 rd. clip.

  • phil November 27, 2013, 12:42 pm

I have .40 Service (4″) XD, and LOVE it…..though it is rather “fat” to conceal carry without “printing”….so I hope they will come out with the same caliber (40) in “Single Stack)!! soon, for deeper concealment!…..I want to stay with the SAME type of gun; ammo so no mixup .

  • Ray November 25, 2013, 9:49 pm

sorry tried but does not compare to the sig 220 compact.

  • Dave September 8, 2013, 5:31 am

Not as good as you say. There is a recall on them because

    1. They can fire when loading or unloading.
2.They can double fire with one trigger pull.

    I wish I would have bought a Glock 30

Mine also has jammed 6 times using several types of quality ammo…Do not buy this dangerous paper weight

    • Administrator September 8, 2013, 1:03 pm

That is complete horseshit. The XD-S is the best small pistol on the market and I carry it every day. This is a rare bug in the gun and I personally have never seen or heard of a case of it happening. You are probably lying about the jams, or you took it apart and put it back together incorrectly, which an unusual amount of people with letters after their names tend to do. I have now carried and shot the 45 and now the 9mm for a year and a half and it has never failed.

      • gunnardog February 10, 2014, 2:53 pm

Have to agree with Admin on this one. Many are all wound up about the recall but have little appreciation for the level of technical detail that Springfield went to in order to isolate the problem and even when the likelihood of an accident happening was very small, they still “bit the bullet” and spent millions to assure that no one got hurt. Many gun manufacturers have foregone that option in the past……..like ummmm Remington! I love the .45 XDs. Mine was recalled, they handled it professionally and turned it around quick. No FFL involved because it is a repair. Gun comes back better than new. Glock, Springfield. Ford, Chevy. Now days they are both superior products and I would be happy to carry either in my holster.

    • Jamie Taylor August 28, 2016, 3:52 pm

I have xds .45 acp and this gun is awesome no jams no harsh recoils, and no problems with anything I carry daily and the accuracy is by far better than some major big brother pistols so don’t put this gun down if anything pick one up and just fire it lol.

  • brian palmer July 11, 2013, 12:55 pm

i own this pistol and absolutly love it. i just ordered my prp trigger kit. it should be here today. cant wait to install it and shoot it. this is my carry gun and would gab it before i grabbed any of my fullsize guns. super accurate gun right out of the box. hghly recomend this gun!!!!!

  • Annie June 26, 2013, 2:58 pm

I have the XDS .45 and absolutely LOVE it. I picked up a loaded gun for the first time 2 months ago (I am 31 yrs old) and have taken on the sport like a mad-woman. I just got my concealed permit and immediately bought the XDS as my carry pistol. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sub-compact .45.

I’ve owned the XDS for awhile and really like the little rascal. It needs to be shot a bit before it will cycle hollow point ammo, but that’s what shooting is about. I got the 7 round mag. for it and it handles round nose stuff just fine. Now to get it out and use it until it fires everything. Great weapon. I’ve got the XD also.

  • J K March 15, 2013, 7:22 pm

Springfield has a 7 round extended clip available for this single stack 45

  • Landis Lawton February 19, 2013, 8:05 am

I own the XDS .45 and love it. When it come to Concealed Carry, I love the way it just disappears. When firing it, I really don’t feel much difference in the recoil nor the ability to come right back onto sight picture sight alignment. Five rounds in the mag and one in the charmber, thats plenty for me when it comes to the .45’s knock down power.

  • Nonny February 12, 2013, 2:46 pm

Nobody remembers the S&W CS9? About the same weight and it was made of METAL.

  • Bob February 5, 2013, 10:06 pm

I recently picked up a XDS in 45 for CCW, and went directly to the range. I was very impressed with how accurate
I am with this gun. Has a great trigger for this kind of gun and recoil is not bad at all. I am a major 1911 fan and handgun hunt with redhawk and not a fan of polymer guns till now. This will replace Glock 26 which I am not comfortable with. I put a Viridan C5 light/laser on it and I am very happy with my ability to defend my family should it ever happen. Felt the XDM 5.25 in 9 mm and am going to sell Glock and buy one of these for competitive shooting in 3 gun. Great box with complete set up, way to go Springfield (my fist). Leave it two Rod Lathem to help turn out best in class in my opinion (45+ yrs shooting).

  • Paul February 3, 2013, 4:51 pm

I recently purchased an xds for $549.00 at a gun show here in florida, last weekend I headed for the range to see what this gun can do. Well let me say that this gun has more than exceeded my expectations. It just feels right in my hand, and it was not overly punishing to shoot. I put 50 rounds through it without a hiccup of any kind. I had two different kinds of ammo and it functioned great. This will now become my carry gun. If you decide to purchase one of these, I’m sure you will be very satisfied as I was.

  • 2gunmurphy February 1, 2013, 10:36 am

Only negative I see(not important to many) is that I think it is a shame a handgun as nice as this could not be produced in the USA. I fully understand why it is not. Still, just too bad.

  • Gil January 25, 2013, 9:27 pm

I bought one today, and do not plan any gun fights with it. If I cannot hit my target at 10 or 20 ft then I am in trouble. My object is to carry it with out any one seeing it. I was carring a .38 but felt under gunned if I came up to some one that is hopped up on drugs. I think Springfield came up with a great hand gun for what it is meant to be.

  • patrick smith January 24, 2013, 9:24 pm

even today; or should i say this past wednesday…this gun is extremely difficult to find, whether or not its because of the gun buying surge due to our lovely president obama….but the store i went to National Armory LLC they just got one in the day before while Delray Shooting Range has none. Approx price tag is $670-700….i put down 1/3 or $262.48 to layaway it till i receive my refund check in a week. after holding it in my hand and shopping specifically for a conceal carry for florida’s lovely summers, i decided on this gun. everywhere i read claims this is the gun to buy

  • DB January 22, 2013, 11:59 am

Awesome that the grip is small as so are my wifes hands. I’ll stay with the XDS as my paws are large and need to feel a grip not just wrap around my own hand

  • Dean January 18, 2013, 12:51 pm

The XDS in .45 is a lovely back up, hide out, or concealed carry gun.
I have large hands and like a sidearm that fits my hand more like a duty pistol,
but I definitely see the applications for this outstanding pocket pistol. I too want it in 9mm, and consider it tailor made for Speer’s Golddot 124 Gr. +P round. I’ll purchase this gun in 9mm.
“I feel” like this gun is safer than a Glock 26 or 36 chambered in a pocket holster, especially reholstering under stress (unimportant for some I’ll grant). I EDC a G23 OWB, in a Milt Sparks HN-55 or a Bianchi Carrylok. (Speer Golddot 165 Gr.)

    Thanks for a fine article!

Excellent pistol, just got mine. Much less recoil/ jump than I had anticipated AND better accuracy.
Left the range today with some fist sized groups at 25ft.

  • marshall January 1, 2013, 11:02 pm

Thanks for the info on the new xds i searched it up to see what was up with it,,,i dont usually look at blogs but i will say a handful of people that want to sit around and try to find something to argue about can ruin a good info forum on a certain product and this one was for the xds not how your stuff is better or who is a moron(thats usually obvious on its own). Thanks to the ones that stuck to the forum. The xds looks like a good gun in the running for carry guns.

  • GP December 29, 2012, 8:22 pm

EVERYONE THAT IS KNOCKING THE XDS MUST HAVE NEVER SHOT ONE

ididnt like the .45 either until I shot the XDS..then ran out and bought it the next day..LOL

  • Jones November 13, 2012, 3:36 pm

Just how good is the XDs? Well, I sold my entire 1911 platform .45’s including a Colt WW1 Replica And a Kimber Desert Warrior Custom 1 (no Schwartz firing pin safety) just to name a Few…Had a Ulta Carry also…I now just have 2 >45’s The XDs and a HK45 (like the P30 not USP)

The weights are many times misunderstood in this thread…my XDs weights 21 ounces My HK 45 weights 27 Ounces (4.445 inch barrel) and is a full size Service Combat handgun that is more accurate than My Kimber Target or Colt Gold Cup w/o ANY function problems what so ever Kimber wasn’t bad, Colt FTF every 10 Rds….Like HK says “No Compromise” I like the HK Var 1 because it can be used just like I trained with my 1911’s all those 47 years.

I know this thread isn’t about HK…it matters tho because the XDs was so good it made me want to dump the 1911 platform completely and not look back…HK45 is the only pistol that can be all those other 1911’s combined in one firearm…IF I had the funds for a Bill Wilson and a Les Bauer maybe I would feel different but cannot afford boutique firearms and not sure I would throw down $20K that $1500 gives me covering all needs in just 2 firearms from the pistol group. Also, The accuracy and range of the XDs is unmatched in it’s class and ditto for the HK45…shooting FMJ white box ball ammo.

  • Dudeacus October 25, 2012, 1:15 pm

I purchased my XDs earlier this month and unfortunately have not had a chance to fire it. I intend to shoot it soon along with my XD 9 SubC. I’ve change the backstrap already and it seems to fit better with the smaller size. I don’t know if the fiber optic site is better than night sites so we’ll see. Still waiting to hear back from Pearce to see when the mag extender for the XDs will be ready. My biggest question is what type of ammo is best for defense? I prefer Speer Gold Dot which I carry in the LCP and XD 9. Looks like Speer has developed a short barrel round. Any thouhts? Thanks

  • Donnie October 15, 2012, 10:59 pm

To my last comment: I carry the 5″ tactical in the .45 cal

  • Donnie October 15, 2012, 10:55 pm

I carry the Springfield XD 5″ tatical with a tactical light for my duty weapon. 13 in the clip and 1 in the pipe, thats a lot of shooting power however, the Springfield eill hit what you are aiming at every time. I’ve had this weapon over three years now and still can’t get over how well it shoots, I out shoot all my other handguns including 2 different 1911’s. Ii can’t wait to get my hands on this lil feller!

  • Steve September 22, 2012, 11:26 am

I just got my XDS with a 7 round clip. That makes 7 + 1 in the pipe= 8. More than enough lead!

  • papa pow August 30, 2012, 12:08 pm

The xds is more manageble to shoot than the 9mm, PF9, Kahar cm9 or the Rugar Lcr with plus p ammo I like shooting the xds just as good as my Kimber ultra lite with a 3inch brl. In my openion the xds is a excellent faster weapon . The design speaks for itself.

  • Craftsman August 28, 2012, 1:08 pm

The idea of a single stack pistol in the XD lineup is very clever and right on time. I only wish that the XDS came in a FULL SIZE frame with a mag capacity of 8 or 9 and give me the ability to get a full grip purchase on the weapon.
I love my XDm 3.8, and 4.5 but having something thinner would be JUST the ticket for more comfortable carry.

Going to SHOT 2013 and hope that they have some plans for this.
    PLEASE Springfield MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!

  • james August 11, 2012, 1:47 am

I bought an XD-S couple of weeks ago and have had problems with jams and ftf. On average once every 100 rounds the slide will not cycle all the way forward while shooting the gun. It stops about an 1/8th of an inch short, so naturally it will not go bang. I called SA and they told me to put more oil on it but still had the same problem. Called them again and now they are saying after about 500 rounds it should break in. The other problem I have with it is when press checking it (being a long time Glock carrier I am still in the habit), it has the same problems. Is this a problem most people are having or is it just a few guns out there?

  • Gary Frost August 6, 2012, 5:14 pm

I am wondering if the 7.5lbs trigger pull can be lightened to around 4.5-5.0 lbs. I have one on order as of today.
I have shot the pistol several times (a friend has one) and cant wait to see what types of ammo will work best in the gun. Also interested about holsters and mags and accessorys. From lasers to ammo. I am really glad of this finally have it into production.

    • MarkP August 9, 2012, 11:53 pm

Gary, check out kusiakleather.com for holsters. I just got one for my j-frame and IMO is the best holster available for CC. No outside seams, good quality leather, metal belt clip, and a very minimalistic design for good concealed carry. I spoke with them a few days ago and they said it will be available soon as it is also listed on their website.

  • MarkP August 5, 2012, 7:53 pm

I received my xds a few weeks ago from a local gun shop and absolutely love it. The fit and finish are excellent, very lightweight but stout. As usual for Springfield, they include a bunch of useful accessories with a sturdy case. I also ordered the 7 rd mag from Springfield which allows a full grip but makes it less concealable. The weapon shoots great: more recoil than a 9 mm but less than a .38 snubby, very manageable and controlled follow-up shots. No FTFs, jams, or FTEs. with 4 different brands of ammo. It breaks down for cleaning in less than 10 seconds like my full-size XDm. I called Pearce grips last week and they said that they should have a pinky finger mag extension available in 5-6 weeks which would make this pistol perfect in my opinion. Also, check out kusiakleather.com they should have a IWB holster available for the xds soon according to the website. My buddy has one for his Glock 27 and it is the best-fitting leather holster I have seen for subcompacts. If you happen to see a xds at your local gun shop- buy it beacause the guy behind you in line will

  • james mabe July 28, 2012, 10:59 pm

i have the xds and i think its a great gun and what would make it a greater gun is a 6 round magazine with a pinky extention. also if you could make the front and rear sites more visible for people that wear glasses with larger white dots or make that kind of sites that i could add on i am sure others have the problem, but a happy gun owner and i enjoyed your blog and video.

  • John Simpson July 25, 2012, 4:42 pm

I don’t understand. Was my comment too long?

  • John Simpson July 25, 2012, 4:37 pm

Bought my XDS .45 July 17th. Finally got to the range on the 20th, where it jammed just like Tim Perreault’s. The dealer had his gunsmith look at it yesterday and found nothing wrong. Back at the range today (with two 5 round mags and an 8 rounder). Jacked the slide, released it, pulled the trigger nothing. Had trouble releasing the mag, then found the round in almost a vertical jam. Further firings produced jams both at slide release and after one or two firings. The dealer (who is absolutely first class in customer service) called SA and told the rep that, yes, adequate force was used in the loading process. The rep initially was reluctant to have the weapon returned, advising significant more firings to “break in the gun”. But it is now on its way back to SA. When it fired properly, it was a pleasure, with surprisingly little recoil and a perfect fit with the extended mag. I really do like it. But, as Tim said, after a while I was becoming wary of using it. I wonder how many additional firings is sufficient? Why waste money on ammo when you’re not getting the performance you pay for?

    • mike Pastick July 29, 2012, 10:14 am

John also had a problem with the vertical jam, found out you really have to have that back grip safety engaged when pulingl back on slide and my problem was solved ! Figured it out when I brought my Xds back to shop I bought it from and we took it into the range ,sale mans racked it ,it was fine ,I racked it and it jammed ,had me grip the back safety harder and no problems after that. Good luck bud it is a nice gun just ordered 2 extended mags

  • Tim Perreault July 24, 2012, 1:13 am

When I tried a NIB xd/s , it jammed almost every round. When it did load it go into an unlock breach condition, I was afraid to even fire it. The store owner just said , well sir, you do have to kinda man handle these small guns,it’s fine ! Then he charged me 74 more dollars when I traded it for a Glock 36 which worked flawlessly from the first ! Now THAT gun shop no longer will have my business ” !

  • hamer July 21, 2012, 11:40 pm

I would not buy a gun made in Croatia no matter how good it was

    • Steve July 17, 2013, 9:53 pm

      why?

  • Robert July 14, 2012, 6:50 pm

I see they make a pinky extension as a seven round mag

  • Scott July 8, 2012, 12:27 am

Holy cow!! I Love this thing. I just bought mine today and I took her home to clean her up and went to the range and I am very pleased. This is my first .45 and the first I ever shot a .45. Took me by surprise but this is great! I had to get used to her but I have to agree with Mike, it needs a pinky extension. Also needs real night sights and she is good to go.

  • Rodney July 6, 2012, 12:44 am

I just got my new XDS 45 tried waiting on bi tone scence March got a call in June they had a black one turned it down got a call July they had a black so i got it only because Springfield said they havent sent any bi tone,s out i like it so far but if all fails ill have it refinished to bitone.

  • Mike July 4, 2012, 9:26 pm

Great gun !!! just recieved mine and only thing it needs is a pinky extension.First time shooting it thought it was gonna be alittle snappy being a smaller 45 ,WRONG ,it was pretty smooth and very little snap ,this is gonna be a good seller for Springfield

  • Maverick July 4, 2012, 10:54 am

I couldnt agree more…my 1st thought was to hang on for dear life…but as the article reads, recoil was pleasantly controllable. Even with factory HP ammo, it was more than doable…glad I bought 1! The wife is waiting for the 9mm to come out…and yes, SA is making a 9mm and a 40sw…

  • Mike Stamm June 27, 2012, 2:07 pm

I just got a phone call from my local shop that my XDS is in! I already have a 9mm XD(M) and it is a dream to shoot. I look forward to hitting the range this weekend with the XDS. Springfield’s engineers definitely know what they’re doing.

    • Mike July 4, 2012, 9:28 pm

I also have a 9 xdm compact and just recieved my XDs you are gonna love it

  • Bill Miller June 21, 2012, 7:41 pm

Great info about the Single Stack .45. I have a XDM 3.8 mm and absolutely love everything about it. Does anyone know if the XDS will be manufactured in the 9mm. The 9mm ammo is priced right for me and I like the idea of buying one ammo as much as possible for simplicities sake.

  • JimB June 19, 2012, 12:07 pm

Have had my XD-s for almost two weeks. Like the way it handles and shoots. That said, I am a little miffed at SA for their marketing strategy. Packaged in a nice die-cut foam lined lockable box. Supplied with a plastic holster and double mag carrier…but supplied with only two mags (Pistol = 1 mag + 2 in the carrier = 3 mags that should be shipped originally…not just the two they include. There is an additional cutout for a third mag in the foam). SA says to keep calling back to check availability of extra 5 and 7 round magazines…not cool for a new release.

  • john allen June 18, 2012, 1:19 pm

Just ordered the 7 round ext mag from SA. Give them a call. $39 plus shipping.

  • William Saunders June 11, 2012, 10:11 am

I own a Springfield 1911 45 ACP. Springfield builds a solid and reliable weapon. I would not expectt anything less from the XDS. You’ve done it again Springfield ,great job.

  • Jon Zaring June 11, 2012, 8:59 am

Just received mine as well (on June 9). I’m also getting notices of availability from several websites. 7 round extended mags are coming, but not in yet. Should be available around the end of the month at the Springfield website.

  • Mark Mardis June 10, 2012, 8:14 am

Just got my XDS i love it! Know trying to find good holster.

  • Mark Mardis May 24, 2012, 12:57 am

I talked to my salesman at davidson’s. About two weeks ago they had springfield day at davidsons they are a hole sale gun dealer. I am FFL and that is one of the hole salers i get my firearms from. The top salesman from springfield came to davidsons that day. The day of springfield day. and the top salesman from springfield told davidsons that first shipment of the XDS will not be till middle of June. so im pritty sure may 15th through 31st is wrong! cant wait to get my hands on this firearm!

  • LexingtonNC May 21, 2012, 4:16 pm

    @ Sheepdog81 … Very good counsel.

I am looking to hike in permissive areas of various trails (not just the AT) and looking for something big enough to stop a black bear, yet small enough to conceal so I don’t offend the sensibilities of other hikers (or tell the bad guys who to shoot first). I’ve been told that, in a pistol, the caliber needs to be at least a .45 for bear (works for big cats, too) and I’m pretty sure that I won’t get a chance to fire more than one or two shots before the bear is on me … so having six to start with is just fine. I think I’m more likely to get a chance to reload if I am facing a human because sometimes people miss. Bears & cougars? Not so much.

My wife and I have taken classes* for our CCLs and should have them in hand sometime in the next month. At present, we are hitting the nearby ranges to try various calibers and models of handgun before dropping fat money on firearms. She is not comfortable with anything above a .9 mm and I can reliably send .40’s where I want them. Our second instructor, a former LEO and an employee at a local range, favored Walther PPQ’s & S&W M&P’s for their reliability but, in my remaining lifetime, I’ll never send the 60,000+ rounds downrange that he claims each of these pistols have done without needing repair. (BTW, he claims that the Glocks are more prone to failure than either of the other two.) Sooooooooooo, it looks as if I might end up with either an XDM or XDS in .45. My wife likes the price point of a Kel-Tec, but she’s never fired one. My last pistol fired at the range was a CZ in .40. I’d like to try the newer CZ polymer models (PA 7, ISTR) but they don’t appear to be available in .45 and the range didn’t have one in any caliber.

The fellow who objected to imported goods must live where it is warm all year … to the best of my knowledge, there have been no American shoe factories for years … everybody bought cheap at Walmart and Walmart bought cheap in Vietnam & the Philippines. Walmart and the Unions did not send your jobs overseas, you did.

It’s HARD to ‘buy American’ all of the time. I’m not sure as how I’d blame the unions, though. I’d look at management compensation and net profits for the answers first. Labor is typically a relatively small percentage of the gross cost to manufacture something. http://www.ehow.com/facts_7811332_long-build-car-start-finish.html Look it up. Arguably, the power of collective bargaining in this country is what keeps factories here from becoming like the sweat shops of Asia and the Middle East. I really don’t see any other factors that would prevent that.

*I thought that the first class was poorly done, so I took it again at another facility. I passed both (98%, 100%). Good training is not an expense; it’s an investment. The ‘extra’ money for the second class might keep me out of prison someday.

  • Mark Mardis May 13, 2012, 7:23 pm

OR who is making holster for XDS. Sorry for typo!

  • Mark Mardis May 13, 2012, 7:20 pm

Is DeSantis going to make a pocket holster for this new XDS. Or how is making holsters for it dont like ones that come with it! anyone know?

  • Nelson Peters May 9, 2012, 10:26 am

First part of above is true ,second part is false. For now will only come in .45

  • Nelson Peters May 9, 2012, 10:13 am

I have talked to Springfield and the best thay can tell me is that it will be distributed sometime between May 15 and May 31. It will come in 9mm, .40 cal and .45 cal.

  • BlueSheepdogWA May 8, 2012, 3:55 pm

I am very much looking forward to adding this pistol to my collection. For quite a few years now my off duty carry gun has been the wonderful XD-40 Subcompact which I truly love, but I am a dyed in the wool .45 man. Springfield has proven themselves to me as being a highly reliable, well made firearms manufacturer that can stand toe to toe with any other brand and hold its own, if not come out on top. Thank you so much for giving me a .45 that is designed for concealed carry/BUG use!

  • Sheepdog81 April 25, 2012, 11:22 pm

Okay boys…my last post before I leave: it sounds like some of you are 16-20 years old and talking about guns like they are a new video game. They aren’t toys. They are serious weapons of destruction. I’m 60 years old, a retired cop, and have been carrying a gun daily for 39 years. If you’re going to carry a gun, grow up and stop arguing on web sites. Get yourself aquainted with a good police or civilian firearms instructor and learn the basics of shooting. Get a gun that is comfortable and practical for you to carry and shoot. Don’t buy a “fad” weapon. Develop the proper safety and handling habits and practice a lot. And last of all, stay out of situations where you may have to shoot. That would be bars, drag races, and other places where young men of dubious judgement hang out. Alcohol and gunpowder don’t mix. Join a good gun club and hang out with experienced older guys who will mentor you. Don’t tell anybody you have a gun or permit. Keep it concealed (assuming you are in a concealed carry state) at all times. Don’t be a braggard. Be mature. Be a man. Walk away from trouble when if you can. And pray you never have to use it. Just ask George Zimmerman if he wishes he had turned around and gone home.

  • Ernest April 25, 2012, 10:23 pm

Springfield let me down. why did they make it in 45acp? It should of been made im 9mm. Nobody wants a 45 for conceal carry. 9mm would of been lighter and smaller and could of held more rounds. this sucks!

  • Jason April 24, 2012, 11:44 am

Looks like another Glopycat. No thanks, I’ll keep my Glock 30!

    • Administrator April 24, 2012, 4:28 pm

It is an urban myth that the features in the Glock were unique to that gun when it came out. Even the trigger safety was done in the late 1800s.

  • SnakeMama April 22, 2012, 6:14 am

I am a pint sized female deputy in my home town, and work corrections. I am currently in love with my 9mm XDM, but am also wanting a little more bang for my buck for personal CC weaponry. I’ve been thinking about the sub compact 9mm or .40, but it still sticks out bad no matter the holster I carry. I am really hoping this XDS is going to be the answer, it looks thin enough, small enough… I can’t wait to try one for myself! Thankfully springfield actually understands the differences between other folk’s grips and grip sizes and gives us options – And with the experience I have had with this XDM, I am dang sure this will be my new baby. I can’t wait!

    • Administrator April 22, 2012, 9:41 am

We have a range report coming on the XDM Compact .45. It is a sweet gun and for an LE officer, and who cares if it sticks out a little lol.

  • Joe 205 April 18, 2012, 11:08 pm

Ok it’s April when is the XDS hitting the market?

  • larry u April 10, 2012, 12:54 am

i have owned glock model 22 40 cal and i have shot glock model 21sf and have looked at models 30 and 36….glocks are dependable but they are just too big for my short fingered hands…..the first i read about the xd45, i call my local gun store, they had one, so i went down and as soon as i held it, i knew that was what i was looking for. i am actually glad to see SA making a single stacked 45 available, yes i will be getting one. now, i hear people talk bad and good about glocks…..hey, if it will shoot a bullet, in this day and age, it is a good gun. glocks are great guns, but they dont fit my hands….xd fit my hand so i bought one and will be buying another one

  • Josh April 6, 2012, 7:54 am

As far as guns go, I’m a pretty new gun owner. The only pistol i own is a Glock 22 .40 how would you say the kick on the XDS is compared to my gun? This could be an awesome carry pistol.

    • Administrator April 6, 2012, 9:11 am

It will be about the same but this is a two finger grip so takes a little getting used to.

  • Steve Quirk March 31, 2012, 4:48 pm

If this is of the same quality as my .40 XD, this will be my conceal carry weapon for summer.

  • John M. Yanik March 29, 2012, 6:35 pm

What comes with the XDs .45 when you buy it?

    • Administrator March 29, 2012, 9:52 pm

      We don’t know yet.

  • Survival March 29, 2012, 11:38 am

Local gun shop in Kentucky (not buds) ordered theirs in Feb, said in about a week (end of march) is when it will be in for me. big plus on the size, netural on the 5+1, but it is what it is and instead of spraying and praying, you best be good with the one shot one kill view. Does anyone know where I can get accessories (Holsters, lasers etc) that has already been fitted for these. If you do, please contact me over at http://www.prepperlog.com (aka survival), I’ll also post some video reviews of it there as well for everyone. Springfield, keep up the good work!

    • Administrator March 29, 2012, 11:47 am

We expect that it will come with the holster and mag holster like the XDs, but we still don’t have one yet.

  • PC March 27, 2012, 4:32 pm

    BTW or possibly FYI :
Do not, I repeat, do not use the Pierce +1 extension on the Glock 36. Get / use only the +0, plain extension.
Perhaps 99 % of all feed malfunctions are caused by the increased capacity mag. Otherwise, with standard capacity, failures are rare, indeed. Yeah, I know that this is not a Glock site but I simply wanted to clarify my previous post and give the best possible information to people seeking a small 45 ACP.

  • PC March 26, 2012, 5:19 pm

Why is this concept so new to you? Ever heard of a Glock 36?
Better capacity, shoots great and is still a very compact gun. I have had no issue with handling and it feeds anything that you choose to load the magazine with. Add Pierce grips and I get a solid full hand hold with my XL mitts. Perhaps the Glock is not as “cute” as the XD but if that matters to you more than out of the box reliability, I believe that you are focusing on the wrong thing. I’ll guarantee that the XD will be at least $100 more than the Glock. I got mine for $400. All that said, I will probably buy one, if for no other reason than to have a point of comparison. BTW: I never cared for the AMT and would not own one.

  • Matthew March 24, 2012, 9:48 pm

    Gonna order me one Monday.

  • BATTGUY March 23, 2012, 8:49 pm

When will the XDS-45 be avaliable in California

  • Richard March 23, 2012, 12:21 am

Cor-bon has already got a leg up on a .45ACP loading that they made for the Kimber and Para.
The mission was to get the MV up to speed needed to stabilize a .45 round and still give the 850 fps
needed for reiable expansion out to 25 yards. They came up with a 165 & 185 gr DPX loading. My Chrono has
shown me 975 fps from a 3″ Kimber Ultra II, I would expect that the XD-s to give equal performance with the
same length barrel. At this point the relavancy stops, since the KImber is a S/A and the Springfield is a striker
(no repeat) trigger. This makes them apples and oranges except for the highly effective .45 ACP. Looking forward
to my dealer nailing one down for me.

  • Phil Wright March 19, 2012, 12:21 pm

Theres nothing like a kimber ultra carry 3″ 1911 45 acp for cdwp holders. But have you all seen or shot the Ruger SR 40 C it is awsome. I bought one and love it. I sold my glock 27 40 cal. It is a great gun but ruger got it right this time with the SR 40 C just all around a better weapon than my glock was. I cant wait until kimber comes out with a solo carry 40 cal. I will have to have one. I like the looks of the solo carry 9mm but I just do not like that cal. The SR 40 C has the same grip angle as a 1911. Great thinking on rugers part. Because so many people like me perfer the 1911 its hands down my fovorite and Kimber makes the finest. Does anyone know where I can get or do they have a kimber decal (sticker) for my truck window. If you do contact me at [email protected].

  • Mr.357Sig March 11, 2012, 5:45 pm

If Springfield would release the XDs chambered in .45 GAP (XDg), it would be even smaller. 😉

    • Administrator March 12, 2012, 11:50 am

Don’t hold your breath on that one lol.

  • Mr.357Sig March 11, 2012, 5:38 pm

The XDs looks really nice. It was one of the few handguns introduced at SHOT 2012 that got my attention (the other being the Sig P938). I’m not a fan of SA’s “loaded attorney indicator”, but everything else looks solid. Love the fiber optic front sight and the Picatinny rail – two things my Kahr CW45 lacks. Once the bugs get worked out, I might have to sell that Kahr to fund my XDs. Hmmmmm……..

  • joelboyden March 10, 2012, 8:49 pm

Does anyone know if the XDS .45 Micro will come with a second higher capacity magazine in the tradition of their compact XD(M)s and sub compact XDs ? I would be sold if they include a second magazine that would extend the grip to fill the shooters hand as they have in their other models and also increase that second magazines capacity from 5 to 8 or more. That would be awesome ! Are you reading this Springfield ? ( THE WEIGHT OF THE XDS IS IN FACT 21 OUNCES ! )

  • joelboyden March 10, 2012, 1:03 am

Springfield is making fantastic weapons. I do wish the all of them were made here in the USA, no disrespect to Croatia. The XDS is no doubt another superb weapon. It weighs 21 ounces empty not 29 ! Another Springfield weapon to compare it with might be the XDM Compact 3.8 in.45 ACP. I know its a double stack instead of a single stack but consider these points the XDM is listed as 1” wide while the XDS is listed at .9” but the XDM holds 9 in the flush fitting mag making it 4.55” over the XDS at 4” including the one round we all should be chambering that gives the loaded amounts in the XDM 10 rounds over the 6 in the XDS. The XDM also weighs more at 27 ounces and its longer at 7” compared to 6.3” length for the XDS. So, the XDM is touch wider, .7” longer .55” taller and 6 ounces heaver. The XDM compact also gives you a .5” longer barrel and for that slightly larger frame you get 4 more rounds plus the included 13 round extra mag that extends the grip to a full size grip. That seems to be a lot more utility in only a slightly expanded platform and having a quick reload of 13 at the instant ready as opposed to only 5 more seems to me to be worth the slightly bigger package. The XDS seems better for the deepest concealment situations. For everyday, I think the XDM for me makes more sense. I also like the XDM better than the XD sub compact also in .45 but that is another option that sort of fits in the very small space between the XDS and the XDS. I definitely like the XDS but I think the extra fire power along with the extra size is worth considering in the XDM-45 3.8.

  • Stu March 9, 2012, 10:44 pm

Will be interesting to see how long before longer accessory magazines come out. Single stack is very interesting, but not for only six round capacity limitation. Of course going .40 would be OK too, although it is impossible to hate the venerable .45 acp.

Ok – I was bummed today. I called my local gun shop and they said this wouldn’t be available until end of this year – is that right or is he misinformed? I really want this as it would be a perfect choice for conceal. Hubby already has the XD .45 and I loved it but this one is just too sweet and seems it would fit my hand better!

  • J.S.Pardo March 5, 2012, 10:49 pm

Wait a sec. Who about a added 2 or 3 xd mag.?

  • Donnie March 5, 2012, 5:29 am

I carry the 13 + 1 XD .45, 5″ with a light for my duty weapon and love it as much as I trust my life on it. I can’t wait to get this little feller for off duty carry. I’ve known about this compact about two months now but wanted to wait until the mass reviews came out. I read all I need to know and will be getting one as soon as I can. Thank you Springfield and thank you everyone for the reviews!

  • Jim Mullin March 3, 2012, 1:54 pm

Compare specs for the XDs and the Glock 36.

  • dustyvarmint March 2, 2012, 1:55 pm

Saw lots of comments about the weight. Consider this – I’m 5’6″, 142 lbs. I have a PF9 which is 13 oz empty. I have an XD(m) 3.8 Compact in .40 S&W that weights 28 oz empty. In all but the lightest clothing I’ll take the XD(m) with me anyday.

I most definitely want to see this XDS in 9mm and I’ll throw the bleeping PF9 out the window.

    happy shooting, dv

  • fly fisher February 27, 2012, 9:33 am

I have the xdm 5.25 and the xdm 3.8 sub compact in a 9mm i really like both of these fine pistols very accurate.
the new xds 45acp will be my new carry gun. this is a winner!

  • Jay February 25, 2012, 9:30 am

    Will ther be XDS 9mm?

    • Administrator February 25, 2012, 7:24 pm

      We assume there will be.

    • TJ February 28, 2012, 12:11 pm

Will there be a XDS .357Sig is my question? The first company to come out with a single stack, sub compact .357 Sig that is 1″ thick or less like all these 9mm’s and now XDS will have my money. Fingers crossed for Springfield.

  • Don February 21, 2012, 3:56 pm

What i read was 21 oz.

  • whiffledust February 9, 2012, 1:45 pm

hmmm, this new SA XD-S is 5 ounces heavier than the 45 acp Colt New Agent I’m currently carrying, which comes in at 24 ounces IIRC……

Only holds 5 in the mag where my New Agent holds 7, but yet somehow this is the newest thing on the market since sliced bread…….gimme a break.

YMMV, but my old and newer Detonics Combat Masters, (granted, all steel framed and heavier than this or the New Agent), have been around forever and hold 6 rounds in the mag so I fail to see what makes this new SA so special……..

bet I can still put more 45s downrange faster with the old Combat Master than this new toy ya can’t even get until later this year…..

  • RonD February 8, 2012, 9:19 am

This looks like a phenomenal CCW pistol nice work – almost an inch shorter in length than the glock 36 and 3/4ths of an inch shorter in height – 5 +1 will work well enough for a gunfight at 7 – 10 yds and with legendary stopping power of a 45 ACP you certainly don’t need +P rounds –

I’d love to see this come with night sights front and rear, a 4lb trigger pull, and a steel match grade barrel – I reload and ike to adjust the performance of my ammunition to reduce recoil and obtain better accuracy. I’d also like to see a mag with a two round extension for that extra level of gripping comfort should anyone want it –

I have had the good fortune to have owned at onetime or other most of the 45’s I have seen mentioned. I own five presently and three are XD variants. The others are Kimbers. Use what works for you and forget about opinion. As one who has seen the elephant, remember that one mans religion is another mans BS. The little guy 45 XD is a marketing concept, and will work for a lot of folks. I think I might buy one for my wife.

  • Mz. Reddd February 2, 2012, 6:55 pm

I’m currently a Proud owner of an XD Sub compact 9mm. I fell in love the very first time I saw & shot it. The XDS is also a Beauty! I can’t wait to get my hands on one. I’ve stayed away from the bulky guns do to conceal ability. But the XDS is just perfect! Good lookin out Springfield!

  • Eric February 2, 2012, 7:00 am

I was at the gun store today, and they told me about the xds. They will be avaliable the first part of March and run $550 for black and $600 for bi tone. I was looking for a carry weapon and I think I found it.

    • Administrator February 2, 2012, 7:25 am

      Yea join the club.

    • atm March 1, 2012, 3:47 pm

$550 sounds pretty steep for this gun. Hope actual price is more reasonable.

      • Administrator March 1, 2012, 3:55 pm

lol see the high point article.

  • Deez3043 January 31, 2012, 6:38 am

Not sure what everyone is complaining about with the weight, if you follow the link at the top of the article and select the spec tab at the upper right of the page you will see that the XDs is only 21.5oz. I currently have and love my XDm 3.8 .40 and feel a little committed to my caliber so would like to see one in .40 but may just have to broaden my horizions for this one.

  • Adam January 30, 2012, 8:10 pm

They better make this thing CA legal. I want one so bad I can taste it in my spit!

  • Vincent 1966 January 30, 2012, 12:50 am

Can’t wait for this to come out. Nice addition to my current XD line (.45 w/thumb safety, .40 std and .40 subcompact). It would be nice to leave the LCP at home and carry the XDS.

  • DAKA January 29, 2012, 8:12 am

NICE, I was looking to replace my XD9 subcompact…great gun, but too heavy and too wide.
I sold a PPS that was another great gun for the XD9 for its grip safety, I will be giving the .45 a good look as soon as they reach the dealers…it might be just what I’m looking for.
Thanks Springfield for all the great guns…

  • jimmy January 28, 2012, 11:07 pm

can’t wait until the .40S&W is released!

  • Kyle January 27, 2012, 6:25 pm

I saw this at the Shot Show as well and was horribly angry that I just bought an XDm 3.8″ .40S&W to conceal carry. Guess what’s getting traded in for an XDs!

I’m really liking the thought of this single stack for concealed carry. I carry an LCP now, and could go for a litle more weight to get a lot more firepower, yep.

I’m really *not* liking all the hating of anyone who mentions their Glock, and how the 12 features of their gun compare to the 12 features of this gun. The “moderatior/admin” is being a jerk. Will I get yelled at because I mentioned a Ruger LCP in this thread? Does every sentence of discussion have to have “SA” or “XDM” in it?? Geeze.

  • Bob January 26, 2012, 4:36 pm

The weight and dimensions for this pistol are no great shakes.
21 1/2 oz empty, plus 4 1/2 ounces of ammo= 26 oz loaded and one inch thick are not pocket pistol specs. I have many pistols and revolvers as well as a ccw and know what prints and sags a pocket. This is a holster pistol and as such would make more sense with one or two rounds capacity.
A Keltec P11 with 357Sig kit is 6x4x1″ and weighs 20 ounces loaded with 10 rounds- similar size but lighter, much more power and more capacity. Granted it’s probably harder to shoot.
A Charter 44 -5 shot revolver is 19 ounces empty and very shootable with hot loads.
Once you go from pocket to holster size and weight, a marginal gun like this is easily outclassed even if you have to have a 45ACP.

Hi there, I am very interested in the newly released XDs. As a current 4.5″ XDm ..45 owner, I am happy to see an answer to the Glock 36 for CCW use. I did have a question about the weight stated on the xdspistol.com website. 29oz seems very heavy for what this weapon, considering the stated weight of 27oz for the XDmc .45. Is this possibly a typo? Considering the Glock 36 weighs about 23.5 oz with an empty mag in it. Additionally, is there pricing and availabilty information at this time? Thank you

  • twgriz January 25, 2012, 9:56 pm

Had the pleasure of shoooting the xds at media day. Recoil is very managable with 230gr FMJs that they supplied.
Am classified as an expert in conventional pistol. 6′ 265#, large hands, stated only for anyone who may question experience and familiarity with firearms.
Gun doesn’t torque up and away as do 1911’s. Recoil arc is up and back, making follow upshots easier.
No price as of the SHOT show. If I remember correctly, will be introduced in March.
I like the way the xd fits my hand. Glocks feel like holding a 2×4.
Have a xd tactical in 45 and have shot the 5.25c. The xds will compliment these two.

Don’t care what your favorite/pet gun is. You won’t be standing next to me if TSHTF.

  • Steve Antoine January 25, 2012, 9:43 pm

I love my XDM9, and this one looks like a great carry option. Looking forward to seeing this one when it is available.

  • Julito C.Domagtoy January 25, 2012, 4:38 am

Price of the unit. am interested if you can supply in the Philippines.

  • Mike January 24, 2012, 9:06 pm

Can not wait, I own a .40 XD and 2 XDMs onr in .45 and one in 9mm, Springfield is by far my favorite of all the firearms I own. Gonna tell the gun shop the second he hears about them I want one.

  • ron 13 January 24, 2012, 6:33 pm

I hope they will eventually offer and mag extension like they do for the XDsc models. If you have large hands, this will make a big difference in grip and also add a few rounds.

  • Dan January 24, 2012, 12:51 pm

after reading this I am even more sad about living in the state of MA where ridiculous compliance laws make it impossible for me to purchase one of these!

  • R Krieger January 24, 2012, 12:20 pm

lol @ all the GLOCK fanboys coming in here to tout their product and circle jerk each other. This is an article about Springfield’s new .45 concealed carry pistol. If you don’t like it (which is impossible seeing as how you haven’t shot it yet) then don’t comment at all.

    “but my GLOCK just works”

well, so does my KIA Optima but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t rather have a Lexus.

I don’t really drive a KIA by the way, just making a point.

everyone has different opinions on guns and it’s ok, just don’t push your opinion on us as fact, especially since nobody here has even shot the gun yet seeing as how it’s not yet available to the public.

    • crunluath March 19, 2012, 2:24 am

R Krieger, my Glock does work, and it works very well. I have never had a malfunction after having fired thousands of rounds through it. It is an awesome pistol. The XD is also an excellent pistol and I am considering getting one because they are excellent pistols. I think they have been out long enough now (in the U.S.) to have a history that shows they are every bit as reliable as the Glock and they also have additional features that many will find more attractive than the more spartan Glock. There are just as many XD fanboys trolling Glock, M&P, and 1911 sites as there are Glock fans reading these posts, perhaps looking for something different or better too… I’m sure there are as many Lexus owners that decided to go back to a Mercedes-Benz as there are Lexus owners that decided to buy a plain old Toyota the second time around. It all comes down to preference once one has narrowed it down to the most reliable options available.

  • wasp777 January 24, 2012, 11:56 am

Made in Croatia, what a let down. Hope they’ve worked on the accuracy.

    • crunluath March 19, 2012, 2:30 am

A let down..??? It was originally designed and manufactured in Croatia, by Croatians! Springfield is an importer of this pistol. Read my post further up for a brief history of this firearm. Saying it’s a let down is like saying, “wow, what a shame Heckler and Koch has guns for sale in this country!” As far as accuracy goes, there was a competitive shooter / gun writer who was a die hard Glock enthusiast who decided to take an XD to a pistol match (IPSC if I recall correctly). He took the pistol straight from the box to the match; it was the first match he scored a perfect score on! The only reason he didn’t declare it better than the Glock at the time was because the XD was “new” and the Glock had been around for about 15 years the time. Google it and you can probably find the story…

  • donnie steen January 24, 2012, 8:47 am

If springfield makes this in a full size 5incher and they BOTH feed from the SAME mags…….that would really be something I’d be into purchasing! A holstered fullsize and a pocket/ankle pistol that load from the same mag pouch…….heaven! But at a big weight shed vs. My glock 21/30 combo in use now. If only they would parkerize or blacken the mags I’d be thoroughly interested!

  • Glen January 23, 2012, 10:06 pm

    Awesome boot gun!

  • ArrowHead January 23, 2012, 7:39 pm

For everyone concerned about the weight, Rob Leatham just said on XDTalk that the weight is actually 21 oz, not 29 oz. (I’m assuming the weight is with an empty mag like most SA specs)

  • Bob January 23, 2012, 4:18 pm

If you want a subcompact Springfield XD in 9mm, you could simply buy the subcompact that has been for sale for a couple of years. It is a double stack, but no wider than the single stack .45 XDS. If you want an American Springfield there are certainly plenty available, but for my money the XD series are the finest handguns you can buy. Every feature is exactly right. They just cost less than the 1000-3000 dollar models!

  • Jim January 23, 2012, 1:23 pm

The Springfield XD gets my attention! But no one talks about the best carry .45 Its the new Colt New Agent It’s 3” barrel 61/2″ overall length, 7-1 load mag, and aluminum allow frame, and made in the good old U.S.A. The only draw back is the extra 1” length on the grip!

  • Daniel January 23, 2012, 9:36 am

Wow. I am in the market for a small 45 ACP. I was considering either a Taurus PT145, or a PT745, to fill the niche for a compact 45 ACP, but now I will have to go with this new XDS. I have had issues with previous Taurus firearms I have owned, but I have not had any problems with any XD I have owned or shot. I was going to cross my fingers and hope for the best, as far as me buying a Taurus.

I like the Kahr PM45, but to be honest, the polymer framed Kahr in any caliber, is not good enough to warrant their ridiculously high prices. I’ll wager that the XDS will run somewhere between the XD and XDM, price wise, but closer to the low end.
As far as weight goes, I cannot believe the XDS weighs in at 29 Oz. The Taurus PT145 has a weight of 22.2 OZ, and the PT745 is 20.8 Oz.. The Kahr PM45, with magazine, is 17.5 Oz. The weight for my XD45 Compact with a 4” barrel is 29 Oz., so the XDS cannot weigh as much as my XD45 Compact. I’d think the XDS weighs close to what the PT145 does.

I have owned both a Glock 30 and a Glock 36. I ended up dumping them, because they do not fit my hand. I like Glock, but pre-Gen4 models do not fit my hand properly. I have to shift my grip on a Glock after I draw it. If a Glock fits your hand, then jump on over to a Glock forum and spread the good news. I really don’t understand people coming here to brag about their Glock. I have a Glock 17 Gen 4, big deal. The article is about a Springfield XDS. Bragging about Glocks here, is like a Ford man going to a Chevy forum to brag. You will not convert anyone.

The Springfield XD does fit my hand. I can draw it from a holster and not have to change my grip on it. The XD points naturally for me. The only gripe I ever had with the XD model, is installing night sights. I own two XDs, an XD45 Compact and an XD40 Sub-Compact. I have installed night sights on both and nearly lost my religion trying to remove the factory sights. If I decided to buy another XD, I’d put night sights on it too, and would probably be cussing under my breath the whole time. I believe in the XD. I have found them to be extremely reliable and accurate.

  • Rasedbol January 23, 2012, 8:46 am

Can’t wait to see one of these. For too long many so called “compact” handguns were not very compact at all…
Sounds like this one might be a winner…. I am concerned if the weight is actually 29 ounces empty. I have the ANT Backup .45 and as much as i love having a .45 pocket gun I have always considered it HEAVY for a CCW and it weighs 24 ounces empty…. Then again the quality and the reliability (and price) of the XD .45 should be far higher.. Hope to see one soon. Just my .02 cents. RAS

    • Rasedbol January 23, 2012, 8:47 am

Meant the AMT BACKUP .45 … Maybe the “ANT” will be even smaller … 🙂
      RAS

  • Rob January 23, 2012, 7:52 am

Good article but it’s obvious the author has never shot a Springfield 1911 Micro or a Kahr PM45 (both of which have been around a while). I own both and they are fun to shoot and very accurate.

  • JEFF CAMPBELL January 23, 2012, 5:54 am

THE NEW SPRINGFIELD XDS IS THE BEST, DONT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON SOMETHING ELSE THIS ALL YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE HAPPY WITH, TOP OF THE LINE, IF YOU DONT HAVE ONE GET ONE ITS ALLSOME.

  • Christian January 22, 2012, 9:48 pm

As a newbie to conceal and carry I was considering a Karh CM9 or Walther PPS. I really like the design of the PPS, but don’t like the mag release. When I saw that Springfield was coming out with a single stack my mind was made up. I’ve shot the xdm9 and 45 and they are great guns. Just wish we knew what the price point was.

  • Jeff January 22, 2012, 5:54 pm

Near as I can tell the mag catch slot is toward the front like other XDs….too bad

  • Jeff January 22, 2012, 5:49 pm

I will buy one if the magazine is M1911 compatible. Interoperability is key to me and both Glock Armorer Instructors were dismissive of this idea for a single-stack .45 Auto glock using 1911-compatible mags. This would be very desirable if this was going to be used as a backup to a primary 1911 carry weapon.

  • Jim January 22, 2012, 10:28 am

Would like to see Springfield Armory come out with a manual safety and just a little longer on the grip end like the 40 cal. compact. Small grip area can be hard to grip handle when under duress.

  • BB January 20, 2012, 9:02 pm

Sweet little gun. Would buy it in a second if it came in .40. Take me 5 seconds in .45. Either way I think this will be my next. Weight? who cares, I’m used to carrying a S&W 4006 stainless steel Tank for the last 21 years.

  • Mark Mardis January 20, 2012, 9:01 pm

Hey Rick did u see the Spring field XDS .45 compact micro at the gun show only in black or other colors to? Thanks Mark M from KY

    • Rick January 23, 2012, 7:31 am

Fondled the only one, a black one. I’m sure more colors will come. MSRP is around $700 i think.

  • Mark Mardis January 20, 2012, 8:50 pm

RICK You say u fondled a drooled all over Spring field XDS .45 compact at the gun show so how much is it selling for!!!!!!!

  • Roger January 20, 2012, 7:54 pm

Does anyone have an idea if the same kydex holsters made for and XD or XDMs will fit the XDS?

  • Travis January 20, 2012, 6:17 pm

Looks to be a nice CC firearm. I think it will go nice with my Springfield XD compact (45) and SIG Sauer P220R (45).

  • Rick January 19, 2012, 8:48 pm

Just fondled one of these at the SHOT show and it really is a nice concealed carry weapon. The weight is not really a concern and either is the grip. Feels good in the hand even if you have meathooks. Someone in the shot show booth needs to sanitize the XDS .45 because I drooled over it a couple of times today, will probably go back to the show Friday to do some more drooling.

  • Rick January 19, 2012, 8:19 pm

Just fondled one of these at the SHOT show, it will be my next handgun purchase for concealed carry. For a small gun it has an adequate grip even if you have meathooks for hands. Someone might want to sanitize the xds on display at the show because I drooled all over it today.

  • anestech* January 19, 2012, 2:15 pm

On second thought, maybe that 29oz weight is with a full mag vs the empty mag weights for the other models??? I emailed SA asking them, and also asking about pricing and availability. I will post their responce?

  • Bonzer Wolf January 19, 2012, 12:52 pm

I was referring to Rob Leatham, the Springfield Armory Rep at SHOT 2012, not the author of this entry. I apologize for the confusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW9p-MRE4pE

  • Bonzer Wolf January 19, 2012, 12:41 pm

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that a dude who works for a company in the ONLY state where you CAN’T carry a concealed firearm, is telling us, that this is his new concealed carry pistol? It must fit in his pajama pants because the only place you can carry a concealed weapon in Illinois is in your house. I’ll stick with my Glock 36.

    • MarkP January 29, 2012, 1:28 pm

Take it easy Bonzer. I too live in Illinois, but am not restricted to it. I carry out of state when I travel. But the politicians here have made all the criminals promise not to carry any concealed firearms, so I guess I’m safe in Illinois.

  • anestech* January 19, 2012, 12:26 am

Guys, there 29oz weight is clearly a typo, the stated weight of the XDmc .45 is 27oz http://www.the-m-factor.com/html/specs_11.html, so there is no way this tiny thing is heavier. Hell, my 4.5″ .45 XDm is stated at 31oz, so there must be a typo here. Hopefully pricing is reasonable and Pearce will make a +1 extension for it soon. I’ve been set on a G36 for my recently acquired CCW, but I’m holding off till I shoot this little bad boy.

  • Red January 19, 2012, 12:12 am

Love the article on the new XDS Single Stack Micro… When will we know if it will become available in California? Will there be (2) variations, the .45ACP and a High Capacity version? And of course how much it will go for!
    Nice Piece

  • Tom Philipps January 18, 2012, 11:43 pm

Am I alone in thinking this looks very much like the Walther PPS offered in 9mm and 40 caliber? Very very similar guns. Price on the PPS is pretty high…don’t know what this XDs will sell for though.

  • John W January 18, 2012, 9:17 pm

When they get this in the .40 I’m all in. The only bummer will be waiting to get and finding someone to make me a good iwb leather holster.

    • bassmaster5883 February 13, 2012, 9:30 pm

I bet Crossbreed will have one shortly after they are avail to the public.

  • Mark Mardis January 18, 2012, 5:57 pm

Does anyone know what the new Spring field XDS single stack .45ACP Micro is selling for?

  • Ron LaFitte January 18, 2012, 1:32 pm

I am a multiple XD owner and love my XD’s. My wife carries a XD sub-compact 9mm and I carry a XD 45. This new addition would be a welcome member of our arsenal…. provided the cost is not outrageous. When will we see these on the market and how much should we expect them to cost?

  • Ron January 18, 2012, 12:08 pm

how does this compare to the slimline glock 36 in 45acp? I have the Glock 27 and am not pleased with the handling of that even with an extended, vented long wolf barrel

  • Nick S January 18, 2012, 11:51 am

I like the look of the new XDS but the weight would certainly keep me from carrying it. I’ve owned 2 XD40 sc, and loved shooting them, but hated carrying them….just too darned heavy. I still wanted to carry a .45 and bought a Glock 36. Still a little heavy and I wasn’t totally satisfied until I discovered the Kahr PM45. It was a perfect match. Many people think it’s a handful to shoot, but I can tell you it shoots great. Very accurate and I’ve pocket carried many times.

  • Frosty J. Hammer January 18, 2012, 11:37 am

Here’s a fun little game: every time somebody says “too heavy” (even though the 29 oz. is a misprint) you have to sip.

And any time somebody says “I’ll keep my Glock” (even though this is an XD thread) you have to chug.

Gotta go now… room starting to spin… have fun!

  • atm January 18, 2012, 11:19 am

This Glock praise is played out. They were cutting edge – 30 years ago. Now they are following the XDs and M&Ps of the world. They got complacent when they were the only players, now they are the ones playing catch-up.

That said, I’m eager to hold one of these XDs. Hopefully the ergonomics of the XDm carries over to this smaller frame.

    • wally January 19, 2012, 12:09 am

“This Glock praise is played out. They were cutting edge – 30 years ago. Now they are following the XDs and M&Ps of the world…”

That’s funny…you might wanna check and see who’s still outfitting more L.E. and civilians…SA & S&W are still a ways behind, but the new XDM 3.8’s, and this new micro .45 will go a long way in helping narrow the gap…

      • atm January 23, 2012, 12:02 pm

Glock isn’t popular with law enforcement because it is innovative – it is popular because it is/was sold cheap to LE. Glock deeply cuts the MSRP for LE, as a marketing tool. They can afford to take big cuts out of the price, because it costs Glock only around $200 to make a gun.

Its also popular because it has that 30 year history. If a 1911 was first introduces in 2011, it would not be a big hit. But because of that 100 year history, they are still popular.

        • mike garus March 13, 2012, 4:48 pm

Glocks are popular because they WORK. End of argument.

  • Chris M January 18, 2012, 9:42 am

This is practically a wet dream for me. This pistol is actually thinner than my p238, which is a little nuts.

  • Bob Slaughter January 18, 2012, 7:28 am

Sounds like a great little conceal carry gun with some fire power. Will have to try one out as am needing another conceal carry gun

  • Russ January 18, 2012, 6:18 am

I’m thinking about getting one of these and a CrossBreed SuperTuck to carry it in.

  • Mike January 18, 2012, 4:29 am

Anyone else notice the absence of that striker-stop roll pin through the slide? THAT is the news to me. I think they may have adopted a striker design with a predictable and long service life. I may trust this gun someday… in 9mm. Would LOVE a 1911 style thumb safety.

Anyone know the trigger pull weight and how it feels?

  • Barry sink January 18, 2012, 12:54 am

    Awesome

  • Mxitman January 18, 2012, 12:35 am

    First I own a XD45…the thing is huge, but I can shoot it stupidly accurate. Plus it has shot everything I have ever ran through it…all 2,000 rounds. But I would never buy the XDS, Way too heavy and little firepower. I carry everyday a Colt New Agent, Compact 1911…here’s the specs;

    Model 0781OD
Weight: 24 Oz Empty & 30.4 Oz w/8-Rounds Hornady TAP 230G HP (Lighter)
    Overall Length: 5.72″ (Shorter)
    Barrel length: 3″ (Shorter)
    Width of slide: .910″ (Same)
Width of grip (including stocks at magazine well): 1.135″ (Wider)
    Trigger pull: 4 pounds (NA)
Magazine capacity (.45 Automatic): 7+1 rounds (More Capacity)

I get 2 more rounds loaded for almost the same weight, I hope the weight issue is a typo from Springfield. Who the hell really cares how much a gun weighs empty anyway…at that point it’s a very expensive club. Plus I can use any 1911 holster..which there are millions of. I would have hoped they could have made something really special…I’m sure they will buy another handgun of the year award, But they won’t get my money anymore.

    • wally January 18, 2012, 11:59 pm

      New agent…like about $850…???

    • BB January 27, 2012, 4:05 pm

for most people barrel length isn’t as much a carry issue as grip size is. The agent is wider and longer in that respect. nice gun, but the xds may be more comfortable to carry.

    • Sheepdog81 April 25, 2012, 11:14 pm

I can’t figure out if you’re mad at Springfield or Colt…who won’t get your money anymore??

  • Mark Norcross, Redding, CA January 18, 2012, 12:08 am

Hey Sgt, the only Kimber Ultra I know of has a 7 round mag (probably upgradeable to 8 with aftermarket mags), is longer (6.8″) and wider (1.25″) than the Springfield XDs. And although the barrel length probably doesn’t matter all that much, the overall height (4.8″ vs 4.4″) precludes pocket carry of the Kimber, a market this gun seems to be targeting. Not saying anything against Kimbers–my Pro Carry II is my favorite firearm to shoot, but at 35 oz empty, it needs a good belt.

  • glenn January 17, 2012, 11:50 pm

i have the XD 9 sub and enjoy it, i chose it over the glock because it felt better in hand, i was looking to get the XD 45 sevice for home protection, the taurus 380 i have is nice and light, but i feel not enough for drugged out or large stupidos,,so i hope they will make a 9mm or 40,, 29 oz is to much wt,, also 45 ammo is $$..

  • Alvin Hammer January 17, 2012, 10:51 pm

They have reproduced a larger, heavier Kahr PM45. Have been carrying the Kahr for a couple of years now. I don’t doubt the Springfield will be a good gun, maybe as good as my PM45 is.

  • Jonathan January 17, 2012, 10:08 pm

Shame it isn’t made in the USA.

  • jim January 17, 2012, 9:11 pm

That should have been “younger” and not youger…

  • jim January 17, 2012, 9:08 pm

Is this yet an other gun being built in Croatia? It seems that youger folks don’t care too much about where guns are produced. It DOES matter. I hope more people realize this and the impact this is having on our economy already…
    Thanks for listening…

    • crunluath March 19, 2012, 2:04 am

The XD is a Croatian pistol and it always has been since the HS95 (Hrvatski Samokres 95) became the HS2000 pistol around 1999. IM Metal of Croatia (the manufacturer) needed an importer to bring them to the U.S. after Intrac HSArms (HSAmerica) went out of business. IM Metal first approached S&W but then asked Springfield Armory after being turned down. Around 2002, Springfield secured licensing rights and then imported them as the XD series under the Springfield name. Don’t think of it as “another gun being built in Croatia” or outsourced to a foreign country; it’s a very modern and excellent foreign firearm that has been imported to the U.S., like the Glock, HK, Sig Sauer, etc… It’s creators took many of the best features found on HKs, Glocks, and 1911s (along with other Browning inovations) and built on their original pistols, which drew heavily from Beretta and Walther P-38 design concepts. For a bit more information visit the HS2000 page of U.S. Embassy – Croatia (http://zagreb.usembassy.gov/odc/hs_produkt.html).

  • ed brewer January 17, 2012, 9:03 pm

i love my xdm 3.8 40 cal nice shoot gun and i just bought the new sig 238 380atuo for my basck up it a nice shooting gun to .

  • SgtJCJ January 17, 2012, 8:29 pm

This must be a joke, right? The Kimber Ultra 10 ii was only 25 oz, held 10 .45 acp, and was an awesome firearm. With a heavier, less ammo, and bigger firearm, why would anybody even consider the XD?

    • Russ January 18, 2012, 6:30 am

The Kimber Ultra II (great gun BTW!) does measure out bigger than the XDs and is 25 oz empty.
There are plenty of folks who carry pocket revolvers, with 5 to 6 round capacity (usually .38 SP or 357 mag), who would love to carry a semi-auto with the same capacity, in a larger .45 caliber. Reloads would be quicker too.
The weight isn’t a big negative factor for carry if you have a good belt and holster. In fact, the weight can actually contribute to better recoil management and quicker follow-up shot than with a similar platform such as the PM45.

  • Rockmeister772 January 17, 2012, 8:26 pm

I have the 45 compact XD, and the 40 XD compact from Springfield, and love both of them. I like the extra safety on the handgrip, along with the trigger safety. I will most likely be buying one of these when they come out, as the XD’s seem to be the most accurate handgun I have ever shot. I have nothing against Glocks, but it seems like everybody just has to have a glock…….just like everybody just has to have a matthews bow…….and I wont own either just for that reason. I shoot to the beat of a different gunner.

    • Shayne May 19, 2013, 9:16 am

Rock, I agree with you there. I’m sort-of new to the handgun. My quals have been M-16 (21 yrs USAF) and just got my XDs 45. In fact, today I will put my first shots thru it. My son bought a Glock because, well, it was a Glock. Gun store had to order it. Gun stores in my area don’t carry the XDs much. The get maybe a few per month and won’t order or start a wait list. I can compare most Glock owners to the iphone owners… Gotta have it just because.
At any rate, I plan to go to the range today and enjoy the break-in!

  • Bonzo January 17, 2012, 7:54 pm

XDs is 10% thinner? Could make a difference when CCW. Then again the added weight would put me off carrying this day in and day out.

    • Russ January 18, 2012, 6:16 am

yeah, but the added weight could also make it much easier to make quicker follow-up shots with the XDs.

      • Alan308 January 20, 2012, 10:25 pm

I handled the XDs today at SHOT. The XDs trigger is a vast improvement over most the other single column CCW pistols currently on the market. Short trigger reset and managable trigger weight. Just think of it as a Walther PPS without the goofy mag release. I’ve owned four Kahrs and they shoot ok (good for a Hammer DAO) but I have experienced reliablity issues with them. I will be definately be buying the XDs in 9mm when it shows up.

  • old Mort January 17, 2012, 6:22 pm

Hey R Cutch: I carry a Rock Island 1911 nickel plated .45 and as a back up a Keltec .380. This is a gun blog no? So keep your nastsy remarks to yourself.

  • Roger January 17, 2012, 5:59 pm

I’ve been waiting for SF to do this. My current subcompact .45 wont handle hollowpoint ammo, will this one?

  • Jeff Dunwiddie January 17, 2012, 5:56 pm

Do you consider a 29 oz gun to be comfortable for pocket carry? What does it way loaded with 6 rounds? I think a 30+ oz gun is a bit much swinging around inside a front pocket. But take my opinion with a grain of salt please, and let me know yours.

  • Mark Norcross, Redding, CA January 17, 2012, 5:56 pm

Track backs confirm 29 oz weight, which is kinda heavy for pocket carry. I have an xd9 that has never failed, so I suspect that this will contiue with the same reliability; however, it is a gun I have never been able to conceal well because of the thick grip. And I chose it over a glock as my first pistol because it was easier to shoot accurately–felt right. XDs, for the guy who asked, are ambidextrous because there is no safety lever to manipulate. Clips in the links show it to be pretty controllable. But 5+1? add a couple of tenths to the height and it could be 6+1. So the downsides to me are weight and capacity. The upside is no gritty DAO trigger that inhabits KAhrs and the Ruger LC9.

    • oldshooter March 22, 2012, 12:35 pm

Mark, pay attention at the top of the page you will find in the FIRST paragraph—-21 ounces.

  • gordon lehnert January 17, 2012, 5:45 pm

I recently sold my XD40 3.8 sub-compact an am still kicking myself. But it looks like XD got my attention again. The only problem I have with it is the small grip. Even with the extended mag it just didn’t fit my hand right. I guess I’ll try one of these and see how it goes. Little recoil, I’ll see. Thanks

  • Gabe38 January 17, 2012, 5:34 pm

I carry a Para HiCap SS Warthog and have a Para Stealth Warthog Hide Out in my vehicle. I never feel short of ammo and neither one has failed to go bang whenever I pull the trigger. Quite manageable and accurate. I like these guns.

    • Orm April 9, 2012, 9:56 pm

I just had a Para Warthog in 45 ACP brand new. It was a piece of crap. Broke the recoil spring bushing on the 8th shot. Took an hour and a half to get the loaded round out of the chamber completely. It then started jamming up when I got it together with a new spring and bushing from Brownell’s. Every other round it jammed, so i sent it back to the company and they did something to it so it would not jam every other round, only about 2 out of the mag. I brought it home, cleaned it up and put it in the box and took it to a gun show and traded it to a dealer who really wanted it. LOL.

  • HarryG January 17, 2012, 4:42 pm

I own a XD-45 and it has been flawless since day one. Never a FTF or FTE ever. But unfortunely its too big to carry concealed. I usually carry my Kimber Ultra Carry in 45ACP. I love that gun BUT I go in the bush alot and hate to scratch or bang my Kimber. This XDS would be the cats meow.

  • NFAddict January 17, 2012, 3:53 pm

I was thinking about picking up a Commander 1911 but this caught my attention and I will be considering it in the near future. Spare mags would be ideal on a 5+1 as they’ll easily hide in your pocket.

I believe the 29oz weight is probably a good compromise for control. I will be using this in a belly band or Galco Matrix type holster if they make one for this gun.

  • Mike Kolendo January 17, 2012, 2:35 pm

The XDs are great guns and revolutionary. Since they came out I have said if they came out before Glock there wouldn’t be a Glock. With that said, thank you but my ParaOrd PDA/LDA in 45 ACP is smaller, lighter and has the greatest “double action” trigger I have ever felt. It fits in a pocket as well as any of the new so called Micro 9s and is completely safe in the ready to shoot condition. It comes with a match barrel and night sights and drives tacks without a hiccup. Yeah, I know. I’m a 1911 dinosaur. You bet I am. It’s never failed me.

  • MarkP January 17, 2012, 2:25 pm

I have an XDm .45 and absolutely love it. I have a S&W MP340 for use as a ccw but was looking for a small, light subcompact 45. I had been considering the Kahr PM45 and now the SA XDs. I notice that the XDs has a light/laser rail built into the lower receiver which the PM45 does not, nice to have that option. But at 29 oz. empty compared to the PM45s 17.3 oz. empty for the same size/capacity pistol, what makes the XDs such a “game changer”?

  • jason January 17, 2012, 2:10 pm

So its basically a heavier Glock 36 with less capacity? Granted it is slightly thinner and slightly shorter in overall length. But seriously pocket carrying a near 2lb gun that is over six inches long? Those are some really big pockets. Keep the pocket carry to the PF9s and Jframes lol.

  • Larry January 17, 2012, 1:57 pm

I own and carry a Glock 36, which weighs 21 oz empty, and 29 oz loaded, and that’s with a Pearce plus-one grip extension. 7 in the stack, and one in the pipe. Kudos to Springfield, if I ever need another, it’ll be the one.

  • Alan January 17, 2012, 1:55 pm

What ammunition was used in the tests? Light loads to make it feel “manageable”?

  • john sitton January 17, 2012, 1:53 pm

anyone ever try the STI 9 mm, I have the ROGUE All day long it is with me and even though it might be a bit pricey , it’s comfort and security is well worth it.

  • Ted Schmidt January 17, 2012, 1:40 pm

I have a Para Carry 9 that is very close to same size perhaps a bit smaller that is a joy to shoot and is very accurate. After 100 shot break in it has fired about 1500 rounds without a failure. It is an 8 + 1 for capacity with 3 inch bull match barrel and weighs 24 oz. A variant of this gun is also available in 45ACP. So if you like the 1911 gun this might be worth considering.

  • Larry January 17, 2012, 1:37 pm

As an XD Sub 9 owner, which I think is the best on the market, I wish this new one would have been available then. Being a .45, six (6) is enough, I mean if you can’t drop an intruder with the first two (2) you had better be running. Keep it up Springfield and I will always be a cuntomer!

    • Mark Wynn January 17, 2012, 8:43 pm

So, you never miss in a firefight? I’ve never been in a close quarter firefight with pistols, but accounts seem to indicate lots of bullet flying, few actual hits.

      • cody January 19, 2012, 1:20 pm

Might be true, but if it comes down to it…1 bullet is always better than 0 bullets or no gun at all! So 6 is a heck of a lot better. Some people will buy this gun as their first and only concealed carry weapon…because they love the XD line or just like the feel/size of this one in particular…if it means having no gun vs one with 6 rounds of 45ACP…I’ll take my chances with something I feel comfortable and confident with! I do agree that many situations probably involve a number of shots…most people panic or have very little or no real experience with their firearms they carry…sadly they just think its “cool” to have a gun on them!

    • Orenthial March 6, 2012, 11:38 pm

I agree Larry, six (6) is enough. I am going to sell two of my guns if necessary to buy this XDS 45. There is nothing like concealability and power. I think its a great gun and as a former XD 9 owner, I miss shooting one of the most accurate handguns in the world. Good work Springfield, I’m coming back home. Can’t wait to purchase my XDS 45!

  • Clayton January 17, 2012, 12:45 pm

I have an AR and a Glock already looking to get a XD(m) 3.8 in .40 S/W this Summer and I carry a Taurus Pt740 so when Springfield comes out with one in a .40 S/W Im going to look really hard in getting one of theseIt is really a nice looking weapon cant wait for it to pop up @ the gunshows…

  • Tony January 17, 2012, 12:34 pm

I have both a Kimber pro carry (45) and Glock 36 (45)…i’ll take them over all the other’s out there..Tony Irish….ps I carry “Tripp ss 45 mags” in my Kmber…never a jam

  • MARK January 17, 2012, 12:34 pm

I have an XD(M) in .45 and love it. I also have a Para Warthog in .45 also, with a 2 finger grip with Prace extensions, and I like that also. 5 shots is fine, but my .357 S&W 340pd in Scandium is lots lighter with 5 shots, and it’s a revover that fits easily in my front pocket. And a revolver NEVER fails to shoot! I don’t see a need for it, but to each his own, right?

  • Paul January 17, 2012, 12:32 pm

Great idea, but too heavy. Add ammo and its a waste of time. Sorry….

  • mohillbilly January 17, 2012, 12:26 pm

I’ll be looking to by one if the price is right, the XD series are awesome firearms!

  • Matt January 17, 2012, 12:25 pm

The extra weight may or may not be a drawback. It certainly should make the pistol easier to shoot. While it may not be as pocket friendly at that weight, a good belt and holster should negate much of the weight issue. The real question is will it do anything better than what’s on the market. If it is much easier for the casual shooter to shoot than a PM45 it may be a great step for the newer shooter looking for a small .45. Every handgun is a compromise. Be it weight for ease of shooting. Size for capacity. Ease to conceal for ease of use. Everyone has to draw their own lines as to what benefit is worth the drawbacks. This pistol with it’s extra weight may offer a different set of benefits/drawbacks for many people and be an option that is better than the current market. Time will show if the choices made are ones than put it at an advantage or disadvantage to the rest of the market.

  • John January 17, 2012, 12:24 pm

Hope it’s far more reliable that the micro compact 1911.
Sent mine back to the factory because it constantly jammed, got it back and went right to a gun show where I traded it straight across for a Kahr CW-9 for my wife. Then picked up an M&P-45 and been happy ever since.

  • Parker January 17, 2012, 12:20 pm

Greg, I have a G30SF – really do NOT like it, as it’s just a thick and chunky gal who while great in action, is a LOT to get your hands around. I’ve tried IWB with it and it’s just not comfortable at all. It’s less effort to tuck a full-sized XD45 behind my hip than the G30. The G30SF is for sale after 130 rounds, not because it is inaccurate, but it’s just too fat in my size-L hands, particularly for a tuck-away carry pistol.

With the slimmed-down slide and frame, this is the XD I’ve been lusting after. I wish it was a 6+1, but I seem to hit with XD’s whatever I point at and a couple 45acp per bad guy will at least slow them down a mite.

The reliability of the XD45 and enough weight to keep it manageable when actually shooting – something the superlight carry guys seem to miss the point of on occasion. The Kahr P45 I had was ok in this regard, but they come with sharpish triggers and I got tired of putting on a bandaid to shoot 50 rounds, or afterwards.

Now if Springfield can get us a .22LR XD, I’d have the only other pistol I’ll want in the next few years. How ’bout it, guys, anyone want to petition the folks at SA that we DEMAND an XD22? Scale it down a little if they want, but keep the same basic mechanics and reliability, same operation from a shooter perspective.

    • Patrick January 18, 2012, 12:56 am

Parker…FYI…Glocks do have quite an oversized grip. I loved shooting mine, but the grip was a bit too large for me, even though I have decent sized hands. I did some research and had the grip on my Glock reduced by Dale at gripreductions.com for a reasonable price. I also had it duracoated in complete olive drab. I love it now, it feels just right in my hand. It’s one of my favorite pistols to shoot. Now, I just about have the grip of a single stack magazine pistol but I still maintain the hi capacity of the Glock double stack mag. Just wanted to let you know there are some options out there for your Glock.

  • Zumndad January 17, 2012, 12:13 pm

I’m sure Pearce will be making pinky extensions for these mags like they do for the XD SC 9mm. They make a huge difference in controlling a small stack weapon.

  • Glen January 17, 2012, 12:03 pm

29 oz. is the same weight they list for the XDm 3.8 compact in .45 ACP with the 13 rd. magazine.

    • ArrowHead January 17, 2012, 4:04 pm

Exactly. The 29 oz. listed for the XD-S must be a typo in their literature.
It’s certainly smaller than the XDm 3.8 45 compact w/13-rnd mag.
It’s even smaller than a G36 which weighs in at 20.11 oz. (sans mag).

  • Greg Erdman January 17, 2012, 11:45 am

I’ll stick with the Glock 30.

    • R Cutch January 17, 2012, 12:46 pm

Noboday cares what you’ll stick with Greg. This article is about the new Springfield Armory .45 XDs.

    • Brad January 17, 2012, 6:10 pm

      Greg,

I have to agree with you …My Glock 30 holds 9 rounds of .45 stopping power and hides very nicely in my waistband conceal holster . I like the XD just fine but this will not sway me to run to the local shop and purchase something that is inferior to the 30 with trijicon night sights. So sorry Springfield. And Cutch…I care buddy. I would like my fellow shooters to know they have a better option.

      • cody January 19, 2012, 12:52 pm

A better option for doing what??? If you want your gun to double as a kitchen utensil then stick with your crappy Glocks. Shot tons of them both…no comparison in quality between XD line and any Glock I have ever seen, shot, or handled. When you work the slide on a Glock and it sounds like you are messing with a toy cap gun. Sure they work about as well as most other mainstream guns. But they feel and sound like total piles of junk. I guess that’s what you get when Glock spends about $75 to make each one though 🙂 Get a life Glock people…go back to your God like forums…way up in the clouds of fantasy land…that way you can talk among each other about how you think your crap doesn’t stink and how your guns are better than everyone elses…all because COPS use them!!! (they use them because they get them dirt cheap…because they are made CHEAP) They work just fine, ill give you that. But there are a number of other options that are more reliable than the glock…and many many more that are much higher quality.

        • mike garus March 13, 2012, 4:38 pm

Everyone has the right to be STUPID. But you’re abusing the priviledge!

          • George March 18, 2012, 1:43 pm

Glocks are used because they work. I have a dozen guns that can be carried, 2 are Glocks, in 20 years of Glocks, and 40 yrs of carrying, I have never had one fail me yet. I can’t say the same for most other guns, even my 1911’s that are 3 times the price. There are not other options that are more reliable than a Glock, that’s why they sell. They sold before cops used them and will sell after cops use them, they are a fighting gun, few parts easy to maintain and service. And almost never have a problem, doesn’t get much better. I just had a 1,500 dollar springfield 1911, loose both sights, and a guide rod while firing it in the last month, a brand new gun, so please tell your story walking.

  • BOB C. January 17, 2012, 11:36 am

nice little peice,it would do in a pinch!

  • Mike January 17, 2012, 11:28 am

XD is just catching up to where Glock, Kahr and Tarus have been for years. It’s a nice gun but I don’t see that it does anything the others don’t already do better, lighter or with more capacity. Think I’ll just keep carrying my Glock 36 and being happy.

  • Aaron Daniel January 17, 2012, 11:28 am

This looks like my new carry gun, and just the little buddy my XDm has been waiting for! Springfield Armory, you’re my hero!

  • Deal Fair January 17, 2012, 11:19 am

I am thrilled at the effort being put forward to develope more concealable guns. The weight of 29oz is still a problem. (OH, I understand why, Gee, getting a .45 cal to be “liteweight” is a monumental problem!) I presently can easily cram a 14.7 oz LCP in my dress pants without much concern. Am certainly going to look at it.

    Congrats Springfield A!!!

    • TomC May 21, 2012, 5:33 pm

      It’s 21 ounces empty not 29

  • Ken Hakli January 17, 2012, 11:19 am

Nice, Always wanted a large cal handgun but raising 3 kids I could never afford one.

  • Dan January 17, 2012, 11:00 am

When I bought my KAHR PM45 it was because SpringField Armory didn’t have a small single stack 45. I new it was only a matter of time before they put one out and it has arrived. I have a XD9 & 40 in the subcompact models and you couldn’t ask for a more accurate weapon. I will add their new addition to my gang of XD’s. I already can tell you that if I get one in my hand it will be going home with me.

  • E.L. Thompson January 17, 2012, 10:52 am

    How much cost?

  • Jim P January 17, 2012, 10:49 am

Not so much new here. I’ve been carrying the Taurus PT-145 for years now. At a half inch taller, less than a quarter inch wider, 7 ounces lighter and 5 more rounds I guess I’ll continue to carry it over the XDS.

    • Sam January 22, 2012, 11:32 am

So it’s “nothing new” because you have something vaguely similar.

      Derp.

    • Grant May 22, 2012, 4:28 pm

That’s funny that you say that because I own a standard XD45 as well as a Taurus PT-145 Millennium. The Taurus is a complete pile of junk. It jams at every opportunity it gets. In fact, it’s rare that it ever gets through an entire magazine without jamming.

I have run thousands of rounds through my XD over the better part of 10 years and have yet to have a single round jam. It’s hands down the best gun I have ever owned of any type.

I will be waiting at the door of my local gun shop the day the XDS comes out so I can ditch my Taurus for one.

      • billy November 27, 2012, 11:39 am

So many reports, lol.I have aPT145,As a past gunsmith,A little tweaking and this pistol never fails Me.At first, yes.dosen’t take much to correct or destroy a pistol tho.Problem is,Many owners don’t know or won”t have a good gunsmith properly tune a gun.
        ps;The Tarus is 10+1 & heavy,not a ccw.My thoughts?TheXDS seems to be contender to the catagory,looks good.

      • john March 29, 2013, 2:47 pm

I also have a PT145 and it has never failed at almost 2000 rounds through it. Yeah it has some holster wear on it now, but at just over $300, just over two years ago and just barely bigger than the xds, I will take the double capacity!

But to be sure… if I didn’t know about and/or own the PT145 I’d be looking real hard at the XDs.

PS. If someone has a gun with a lifetime warranty why would they put up with it over and over hardly ever making it through a mag?? “Things that make you say hmmm.”

  • Gregg Smith January 17, 2012, 10:14 am

Nice…I currently own an XD45 Compact and it has served me well.
While I routinely carry a Kahr PM40 with night sights, this makes sense as it’s the same caliber as my bigger pistol.
I also noticed it has a Truglo-type front sight…hope they come with a tritium option.

  • Stonekold January 17, 2012, 10:11 am

Actually its more like the Kahr P45 Black KP4544 but 1 less round and 10 oz. heavier.
    P45 Caliber: .45 ACP Capacity: 6+1
    Barrel: 3.64″, polygonal rifling, 1 – 16.38 right-hand twist
    Length O/A: 6.07″
    Height: 4.8″
    Slide Width: 1.01″
Weight: Pistol 18.5 oz., Magazine 2 oz.

  • Wallace January 17, 2012, 10:07 am

Hmmm! pretty neat but a Glock 36 is only slightly larger and carries 6+1 and my G27 is about the same size except slightly thicker and loaded weighs about 27 oz and carries 9+1 of 40S&W which I believe will do anything a 45 ACP will do. Think I will stick with what I already carry daily!

  • ANDY January 17, 2012, 10:06 am

The XD’s are a rebranded version of the HS-2000’s in Croatia… been around a long time.

I have the XD45ACP tactical and love it. anyone who shoots it wants one and many people make it next on their wish list. I’ve been looking a long time at pocket guns looking for a good CCW in .45ACP but many are out of my price range. this would be PERFECT!

    • Val March 19, 2012, 5:38 pm

I also have a XD45 tactical, and due to the grip AND the best trigger on a polymer, Ishoot it better than my glock 17 L or G22 gen 4. This seems to be a hit from springfield.

  • R Carl January 17, 2012, 9:58 am

Nice pistol and I’m looking forward to trying it, but raising the bar? Ever hear of a Glock 36? Slightly wider at 1.13 in. but has a huge weight advantage of 20.11 oz unloaded vs 29 oz.

    • TX guy January 17, 2012, 11:03 am

This is exactly why I own a Glock 36. Small, light, packs a lethal punch. LOL about the “Innovation” and copying Glocks “Safe-Action” trigger. Putting on a “fiber optic front sight” is really not that innovative. And of course is not going to kick that hard when this small pistol weights almost 2 pounds!!!!

      • Joegun January 30, 2012, 10:21 pm

Why don’t you just admit it? This is one “fine pistol” Springfied is the bomb. And until Glock starts making 1911’s, rifles, ect., give Springfield some credit. They are very innovative!

      • Wade March 18, 2012, 9:52 pm

21.5oz, as per the spec sheet is not almost 2 lbs….

        • mohillbilly April 13, 2012, 3:57 am

          16ozs = 1lb,16ozs+16ozs=32ozs (2lbs) 32ozs-21.5ozs=10.5ozs shy of 2lbs,By my math,that’s way shy of 2lbs!

      • TomC May 21, 2012, 5:32 pm

21 ounces is NOT almost 2lbs. Check your facts please.

        • tim l poole October 26, 2012, 10:50 pm

I’ VE OWNED LOTS OF PROTECTION\, 45 CAL SPRINGFIELD IS THE ANSWER, BERETTA IS LOSING IT’SPACK.

  • LCP January 17, 2012, 9:52 am

Is there a 9mm or 40 cal coming next? if so, when?

  • A. Hupp January 17, 2012, 9:50 am

Anything in .45 ACP gets my attention and this bad boy has done just that. I presume this is a two-finger grip which is the only down side in my estimation. Will a pinky extension to the mag base be available? If so, I’ll be getting out my check book!

    • lance March 17, 2012, 11:30 pm

You said exactly what I was thinking! I’ve wanted a single stack xd for ccw since I bought my 3.8 40. cal. But a three finger grip just doesn’t feel right to me. If a pinky extension option is available, I’m getting one. An extended mag, like the xdm subcompact model, would be even better.

      • Dave July 27, 2012, 12:31 am

Lance, I have a bi-tone and I bought two extened (2 extra rounds) magazines. They make the gun fit my hand perfectly. You would most likely love this gun.

  • Jim January 17, 2012, 9:44 am

I’ll stick with my Glock, but thanks Springfield for your innovation and keeping up with the market.

    • Bryan January 18, 2012, 10:12 am

By all means stick to your Glock, while you are at it you should post on only Glock blogs.
That would save us all from reading your comments here.

      • Steve January 18, 2012, 1:32 pm

Really? So he can’t post on an open forum? That’s the kind of crap that the anti-gunners pull.
There’s nothing wrong with a man posting about his preferences after reading the article and deciding he’s already good to go, and then following up with an “atta boy” to Springfield for their engineering expertise.
        Sheesh.

        • Administrator January 18, 2012, 3:07 pm

This isn’t an open forum comments are moderated, but we let him post. If he wants to look stupid we have no problem with it.

          • SteveP January 20, 2012, 11:58 am

Attended a Front Sight class this fall. We had SA 40’s, and some had Glocks. After every round, they had to repeat (and it got boring) for Glock users to trip their triggers and reset…all we had to do is re-holster. Love the simple systems that SA has developed that make the gun safe but also really easy to use.

          • Charlie January 20, 2012, 12:35 pm

It so made my day to read Admin’s reply. Most of the comments on this thread are totally inappropriate and down right bad manners. Whats wrong with you people? Nobody wants to read that Joe Shmo likes 9mm better, etc. The XDS appears to be a fine addition to the CC marketplace. Glad to see it.

          • Jake Austin June 26, 2012, 12:06 pm

Just curious, if this is not an open forum (excluding vulgarities & etc.) what is it? A three cheers blog for the positive article? Why would an administrator monitor and critisize a statement that is that person’s opnion and said without malice. I like the gun very much, the administrator needs some people skills training. May I ask if this person is compensated and if so by whom.

          • Administrator June 26, 2012, 12:18 pm

You really think someone would get paid to be so course and unrefined? NOT

        • Sheepdog81 April 25, 2012, 11:01 pm

I agree. Bryan should grow up if he’s going to talk about guns. Let’s keep it civil here boys.

      • Jason January 28, 2012, 4:06 am

I own both the full size .45acp XDM and the Glock 36. It looks to me the XDs has very similar dimensions to the Glock 36 less one round capasity as the 36 holds 6+1 and even one more with the Pearce Grip mag extension option making 8 rounds. If they plan to offer a mag extension option that would be way cool. I love a thin single stack 45 tactical pistols like the Glock 36 and adding mag extensions are just fine to me as grip length matters little to me but thin does. The XDs has my attention I love the XDM line my full size 45 shoots amazing. I can’t wait to learn more about the MDs 45 offering and what they decide to include in that fancy case.

      • Nam Marine October 24, 2012, 7:12 pm

Bryan, you’re kind of a stuck up a$$ aren’t you?

  • Frank Futch January 17, 2012, 9:33 am

What’s up with the made in Croatia on the frame??? I thought Springfield was an Americian company!!

    • Administrator January 17, 2012, 9:36 am

All XD guns are made in Croatia and always have been. The final stuff on the guns is done in Geneseo, IL.

      • Bill Patterson January 17, 2012, 7:34 pm

Have a Springfield 03A3 and a 1991 .45 ACP you can’t buy but no more Springfield ’til they bring their bizz home. Shooting is one lovely thing but imports…is another. That’s what has ruined my country; the 11 1/2 months humping and sweating in the Central Highlands left a mark on this boy.

        • Bill Patterson January 17, 2012, 7:37 pm

Moderation is another problem in the US.

        • Ian Frog February 7, 2012, 9:51 pm

The XD’s are the only one’s made in Croatia. There other pistols are made here. If you are concerned about Croatian pistols remember they have been fighting longer than we have and they make a great product. Kimber’s frames are made there.

        • Vince Radzieski April 22, 2012, 6:05 pm

          Bill;
You have to look at cost structure for the blame of jobs going overseas. Once you look at that, look at the unions and labor costs, thats the bottom line.

I guess you don’t own any Glocks either.

    • Jazzy January 17, 2012, 6:42 pm

That’s because they are just redone HS2000 pistols which are Croatian. Of course there are some modifications made to them here, but Springfield imports them to sell in the US market.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HS2000

    • Kenny March 31, 2012, 4:47 pm

The XD was originally a gun made in croatia before Springfield got ahold of it. Springfield saw the potential, purchased the rights to it, and modified the gun. So technically they are made in Croatia. That wouldnt stop me from buying a dozen more if I had the cash. Anytime I’m at the store and see someone looking at one, I talk it up as much as I can. They perform well beyond my capabilities!

    • TomC May 21, 2012, 5:28 pm

The Xd series of pistols started out as the HS2000. A Croatian company that Springfield bought a few years back. They made improvements to the HS2000 and the rest is history. GREAT pistol.

  • R. ONEILL January 17, 2012, 9:28 am

Springfield would do well to make an integral front night sight model. Almost nothing worse than a front sight coming loose, and I can envision that pushing and pulling it out of pockets…especially with a fiber optic front sight standard. I like fiber optic sights on competition pistols. Though, I have had a number of failures with fiber optic sights on Glocks in competitions. What is acceptable in competitions is not on the street. Also, the redundant thumb safety should still be offered for the diehard 1911 fans. Springfield can thank me by sending me a prototype as described. I have my eyes and ears at the ready.

    • Foxtrot197 February 26, 2012, 11:43 pm

Ok , I understand what your saying but for what we pay for these models on my Xdms I have custom sights installed. Same with my Hk when I used them,so why would anyone pay so much for a xdm or now xds and not get proper cage work done for the sight system ? I rarely shoot under 40 cal unless it was a 9 with a can back in the day to drop a street light at night on a detail and even it had custom cage work done for the sights when I used it . (gotta love it and will try for a back up piece) I dont think your complaint is sound however is a thing you could suggest to them. I have used the XDM in real fire use not only the range and they can take a beating, sit under water past the time your feet are blue and you lost a layer of skin and run em over (with clip in) and they take abuse. Im not a collector however I do have a small collection mostly exotics but all my units are for use. You pay so much for a xdm not for the bs details on the card boards in the cases but because how much is your life worth ? If your life is worth buying a 700 of 800 unit (whatever the xdm costs in your area) hey a coule hundred bucks is worth the cage work at a TOP place and worth the wait. I stick with them as I can swap from my XDM to my XDM subcompact both in 40 cal 220 grain and I even had the guy at the cage balance them the same. They are totally under priced guns anyway so spend a few hundred SETTING THE GUN UP TO YOU. too many do not understand how important this is.This XDS seems good

    • Eric April 18, 2012, 2:43 pm

Understand the diehard 1911 fans. But if you want the redundant thumb safety stick to 1911 style pistol. These aren’t it, and weren’t designed to be. These pistols are awesome as they are designed. Bottomline, Springfield a great company both for the 1911 style thru their XD series.

  • Earl Smith January 17, 2012, 9:27 am

Looks like a winner! When and how much?

    • Administrator January 17, 2012, 9:37 am

I think they will be standard XDm price range, but we’ll check into it today.

  • Keith January 17, 2012, 9:20 am

This really looks like a sweet new CCW option but I think there are still much better options. The Kahr PM45/CM45 is nearly a half inch shorter and a whopping 10 ounces lighter! The XDS is only a few ounces lighter than the Colt Officers Model .45 I carried for a couple of decades. I replaced it with something lighter (a PM45) due to my thinking that there were better and LIGHTER handguns out there.
I may acquire one of the XDS .45’s because I am a .45 fanatic but I highly doubt I would carry it due to its weight.

    • john Ouillette May 1, 2012, 4:10 pm

How does that PM45 handle? Does it take the magazines from the Larger versions? I own a Kahr MK40 and like the way it handles. Thought of maybe going to one of them for a off duty gun..

  • Jim Shoulders January 17, 2012, 9:13 am

I have two XD’s already and can see that I will be looking for this one at the gun shows.

  • Hawst January 17, 2012, 9:12 am

Springfield has done it again!! Completely awesome!

  • boyd garrison January 17, 2012, 8:52 am

is the springfield xds 45 compatible with a left hander we usually get left out ???? bjg

    • shooter January 17, 2012, 12:14 pm

Boyd, looks like the only thing ambi about it is the mag release.

    • Ben April 4, 2012, 10:52 am

Over the last three years I started shooting with left handed due to eye dominance. The Springfield is fully ambidextrous. The grip safety is under the striker similar to a 1911, What I would really like to see is an extended magazine setup like the XD 3.5. I don’t mind the weight. A sturdy belt & the proper holster works for me. If Springfield could add two or three more rounds. It would give a better grip & still maintain its sleek design which makes it so concealable. Parting shot. I am a big fan of the 10mm. Now that’s an XD I would really like to get my hands on. Good work Springfield!

    • TomC May 21, 2012, 5:24 pm

I’m a lefty and shoot 1911s and I currently have an XD in 9mm and I have no issues with ejecting brass. The XD series have an ambi mag release.

  • Mike January 17, 2012, 8:50 am

Do we know if the xds 45 acp Micro is available for sale now?

    • Administrator January 17, 2012, 9:38 am

No it isn’t at the dealers yet, but i’d bet a month or so.

  • Richard January 17, 2012, 8:44 am

5 rounds is not enough fire power for me. I need at least 6 rounds or preferably 7 rounds so I can’t wait until SA comes out with the XD single stack in 9mm that gives you 7 or 8 rounds of fire power. A small pistol with a .45 round in it should have a lot of flip/kick and recoil to it. I prefer 9mm in sub compact pistols that are more manageable with less flip/kick and recoil and greater accuracy on follow up shots. It will be interesting to see how Midway USA rates this little beauty. Single stack is a great design for concealed carry.

    • Wingdinger January 17, 2012, 11:14 am

The article does state 5 rounds in the mag and one in the chamber, so you would have a total of six, fully loaded… But yeah, that’s plenty of bullet… Something smaller would be nice.

    • Mark Wynn January 17, 2012, 8:30 pm

Thanks for the useful comment about 9mm in sub compact being more “manageable.’ I’m looking for first, sub compact. The .45 is my emotional favorite, in 1911 … and fat, heavy bullet out of short barrel in sub compact makes sense to me. However, “what works” is always the bottom line. The author stated he found the XD manageable, but I don’t know his skill level or what he accepts as manageable. For sure, he’s on a higher level than this old Husker. Too bad it’s hard to find a place where one can test fire.

      • CARL November 10, 2014, 7:53 am

I DID NOT AND WILL NOT HAVE MY XDs REWORKED, THAT RECALL IS A BUNCH OF BS.

    • Jeff February 13, 2012, 5:38 pm

If you want a sub-compact 9mm or .40 there are several out there by various manufactures. This gun is for people who are serious about what they carry. Thanks Springfield, I’m sure this will be a big hit for all us .45 fans.

      • Fred March 18, 2012, 3:51 pm

Oh, right, so my XD40sc isn’t serious. I see, I guess the BGs will be laughing at all those bullets coming at them.

    • glenn March 22, 2012, 11:37 am

i too would like XDS in a 9mm, so all ammo is the same, my taurus 380 leaves me short on power, though its small and light.

    • Kenny March 31, 2012, 4:43 pm

Maybe you missed the part in the article saying there was hardly any kick when it was fired? I absolutely believe that also since my XDM 4.5″ .45 kicks less than my friends MP .40.

      • Administrator March 31, 2012, 9:10 pm

Hardly any kick no. A surprisingly manageable kick for a .45ACP, yes.

    • TomC May 21, 2012, 5:22 pm

5 in the mag and one in the pipe is 6 rounds. In most civilian firefights 3-5 rounds are fired, and that is by all parties involved. Besides, carry an extra mag and will give you 11 shots. More than enough.

    • Gerald August 20, 2012, 8:35 am

I wish they would have made it double stacked. Correct, 5 is not enough! If I wanted that type of limit, I would carry a 1911 with just seven. Buy a Para P-10 and get 10+1 in a very small package! 🙂

      • Vin August 27, 2012, 1:41 am

it only takes 2 in the 10 ring…

    • ethan August 29, 2012, 10:40 am

This has 5 rounds + 1 .45 acp. What’s one extra round and if it’s 9mm, there a much higher possibility for the assassilant to still be up. The kick to this weapon is actually very minimum, as I do own this weapon. I can compare it easily to a 9mm Glock 19 in recoil. It may have a slightly higher kick to it, but nothing I can’t shoot with one hand easily.

    • guns-r-me December 4, 2012, 6:12 am

If 5 rounds won’t stop whoever you plan on getting into a sidewalk firefight with, why don’t you conceal carry an AR-15. 30 rounds should do the trick and you won’t have to worry about a really powerful tiny gun.

    • CARL November 10, 2014, 7:36 am

I CHOSE NOT TO SEND MINE IN I LIKE MY GUN THE WAY IT IS, I TOOK MY CHL CLASS AND ACED THE HANDS ON.IT WILL ALWAYS BE MY GO TO GUN AND I HAVE SOME NICE PISTOLS THIS ONE ALWAYS CLOVERLEAF 1st THREE ROUNDS .

    • CARL November 10, 2014, 8:05 am

IF YOU NEED MORE THAN ONE BULLET PER TARGET YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMEONE TEACH YOU HOW TO USE A HANDGUN AND BULLET PLACEMENT. I HAVE HAD TO USE MINE AND HAD 3 POTENTIAL TARGETS SHOT THE 1st THE OTHERS IMMEDIATELY BECAME NO THREAT…… SO 6 rds IS PLENTY

  • Darrell Kuykendall January 17, 2012, 8:19 am

This is not the first single stack XD. I have an XD in .45 GAP caliber that is single stack. It was the only .45 Springfield XD available prior to the current .45 ACP

  • Greg January 17, 2012, 7:32 am

I like it! I’m surprised that the article says “Empty the XDS weighs 29 ounces, …”. Kahr’s PM45 (a little taller at 4.49″, but not as long at 5.79″)with magazine only runs 19.3 ounces. However, I still think it’s size will make the XDS a viable competitor for the PM45’s market. Hopefully, the weight given in the article is incorrect. Thanks for the write up!

    • Kevin March 6, 2012, 8:21 pm

This article, and Springfield, say that the gun comes in around –21– ounces. I suspect that full weight is closer to 29…

      • ethan August 29, 2012, 10:38 am

Full clip with +1 in chamber is approx 26.9 ounces with 230 grain round .45 acp

        you welcome.

    • otto May 23, 2012, 3:01 pm

      21.9oz and pm45 is 19.3oz + 2oz for the clip

What is the approximate price range of this pistol also when will it be available. Very interested.

    • Administrator January 17, 2012, 9:42 am

We didn’t get it yet but will ask today.

    • Mike January 20, 2012, 12:34 pm

      Very expensive lol

  • Aaron Tesch January 17, 2012, 7:20 am

Wow! finally a .45 auto from Springfield you can carry and conceal. Springfield has the most accurate pistols I have ever fired but they are heavy and a bit bulky to carry. That is…. until now. I would love to have the XDS in a 9mm.

    • greg February 13, 2012, 10:48 am

Just wait. There’s no doubt they will offer this in 9mm and .40. The order just seems reversed this time; usually the .45s are last in line for new Springfields.

    • Andrew February 24, 2012, 11:25 pm

If you want it in 9mm, get the Walther PPS. I own one and it is a fantastic firearm. This however, I may need to look into.

      • Norman October 6, 2014, 4:49 pm

Can you compare a PA63 9mm with a Walther PPS and tell me if there is any difference, etc. I am very happy with my PA63.

    • AJ March 31, 2013, 10:40 am

Why would you want to get one in 9mm when you can get one in .45? I have one in .45 and believe me when I say it isn’t hard to shoot. I thought it would be a horrible mittfull to touch off but I was VERY pleasantly surprised when I ran that first magazine full thru the gun. Unless you are very recoil shy if you are going to carry this for personal protection I would strongly recommend the .45. Get an extra 7 round magazine to carry in another pocket for a backup reload. that will give you a total of 13 rounds.

  • Steve Rura January 17, 2012, 6:22 am

    Awesome!

  • Kim Severyn January 17, 2012, 5:29 am

As already an XD(m) fan. I am really looking forward to trying one of these out. I love the grip safety and the trigger on my XD’s. Glad to see that is retained in this fine looking pistol.

  • Gerald Barber January 17, 2012, 5:12 am

very nice looking peice when are the avaiable?

    • Joe February 16, 2012, 10:44 pm

I believe they will be available March of this year. (2012). http://www.budsgunshop.com already has the XDS in their lineup. Price currently is $509 for black, $561 for bi-tone.

      • Joe 205 April 21, 2012, 9:27 pm

May American rifleman says in stores now but I still cant find it.

        • Administrator April 22, 2012, 1:06 am

I was supposed to be but there have been delays and they are trying to resolve it.

          • Joe 205 April 27, 2012, 5:24 pm

Spoke with Springfield Armory sales department today and they said they will be in store in May.

    • jim October 30, 2013, 5:11 pm

Just got my XDs .45 back from the recall ! I used to love the trigger on the XDs & I’m sorry I sent it in for the recall down grade ! I’ll probably sell it & find one of the originals. Just my opinion on the subject.

I’m sure there will tons of people willing to take it off your hands, as the vast majority of folks can’t tell much of a difference.

I could not agree more regarding the XDS recall repairs/changes. Further I had to send mine back a second time because I could no longer rack the slide to engage a round, without first locking the slide back and then push the slide release to have the slide quick and strong enough to engage a round into the chamber. The GUNSMITH’S at Springfield emailed that they felt that this process was acceptable and sent the gun back to me the same way. Get this, I had a great gun, but then I sent it in because of the recall.., only to get back a very suspect gun that I no longer have faith in. To top that off, while waiting forever to get my gun back, I ordered a Crimson Trace Laser sight and the gun/laser specific holster from Crossbreed MiniTuck. Suffice to say I have not used them, nor the extra mags they sent me for all the problems and delays. Now if they would have only sent me back a working gun.., better yet like the one I originally sent them.
