Few things in life can match the unbridled joy of a 10/22, a brick of shells, and nothing to do. In fact, there is very little you can do to improve upon that situation. On that short list though, is add a suppressor. And Ruger has now made that easier and better than ever.
Suppressors don’t make every gun more fun. They make pistols heavier and less reliable. They make centerfire guns mostly tolerable, and dirtier. But a 22 rifle? Be serious. It is all the fun of a plinker with none of the noise, and especially in summer, no need for hearing protection. As a former soldier, I have spent more than my fair share of days with sweat pooling in the ear cups of my Peltors. Or the alternative, an equally sweaty earplug, and shouting “ What?” every other sentence at your shooting partner. As the summer sun comes around, I go out of my way to avoid shooting past the morning hours. Unless I have something like the setup I used today.
Today was the first time I got to test the new Ruger 10/22 with the Silent-SR ISB, or Integrally Suppressed Barrel. The lines look like a double barrel gun, but the bottom half is actually a baffle stack. A one-piece barrel and suppressor, it fits any 10/22 takedown model as a replacement. It is one of the most well thought out rimfire suppressors I have seen, Ruger hit it out of the park this time.
First, design wise, it is a winner. It doesn’t really change the look or balance of the 10/22, it would be easy to mistake as a regular barrel at a glance. You nosy neighbors won’t immediately write you off as an assassin and threat to national security, which is a plus. Weight wise, this is incredibly light. In fact, I mistakenly said in the video portion of this review that the baffles are aluminum. They are actually stainless steel, which I was shocked to learn after handling them.
Disassembly is easy. A long allen head bolt holds the baffle stack together. Remove it from the front of the barrel, and they come out as one piece. A simple snapping motion separates the baffles for easy cleaning. Having played this game before, it is much preferable to a single one-piece baffle. Those never come clean, and you will wear out your dental picks trying.
Performance wise, I couldn’t be happier. Using Federal Hunter Match ammo, which has proven to be very accurate, the 10/22 turned in multiple half inch 50m groups. One would be an even quarter inch, if not for a single flyer. That isn’t going to get you on the Olympic small bore team, but it is pretty impressive for a semi-auto out of the box. When you factor in that it is also suppressed, those are hard numbers to beat.
And for noise reduction, this set up is amazing. Ruger says that on average, the ISB reduces 22LR to 113.2 Decibels. I didn’t have an instrument to gauge it, but I would say Ruger’s lawyers wrote that figure. In real world use, I think it performs much better. Even with multiple brands of high-velocity ammunition, I never once wanted for earplugs. And I take my hearing pretty seriously these days. Also, I wasn’t a mortar or artilleryman. 113 Db is close to a Pantera concert, or the inside of a steel mill if that works better for you. Having shot the ISB a lot, I would say it is quieter than my garbage disposal.
All in all, this gun is a winner. I never thought we would see the day Ruger had a suppressor line, but they are doing it well. If you are looking for a rimfire can, this one is well worth your tax stamp money. And at an MSRP of $629, you can still afford some Blam-o.
Love it
I know a guy who is making these send me a email and will forward the info, As far as I know he makes about 130 or more a month for the past few years
Thanks for the great review! Question: On the suppressed version, can you change out the manufacturer’s stock for a tactical one?
I appreciate the review and the straight talk. Keep up the good work.
“ Keep your powder dry “
Why a Suppressor?
See:
Ammunition by Ian V. Hogg
With all the BS arguing right here it is no wonder we can’t elect government officials who don’t have their heads up their ass.
Suppressor or not the day any one of my guns decides to go on a killing spree I will destroy it myself. Here in the communist state of NY I can have a pistol but if my rifle has a pistol grip it would be a felon.
Does anyone know where one may obtain this particular unicorn?
I’ve been searching for one off and on for the past six months or so, and all I can find are reviews.
Oddly enough, I can remember when, in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Ruger made an integrally suppressed 10/22 (AWC Ultra II) before the break apart version and an integrally suppressed Mark II. The latter is the SEAL’s AWC TM-Amphibian S and not only would it work after a dunking, you could add a couple of tablespoons of water to make it quieter. I suppose that Ruger didn’t technically sell these items but I don’t know if Ruger was prime or AWC was prime on the government contracts.
Clay, another well-written and humourous article. I enjoy reading your writing style.
Oh the humanity he used the word “death” in an article about guns, good thing he didn’t try singing “baby it’s cold outside” you guys would have really lost it.
You know what else is as silent as death himself? Political correctness, men’s testosterone disappearing, and people thinking for themselves.
As always great article Clay. All these “gun” people dont realize censoring our own speech is letting them win. Besides the phase means quite and could be used to describe anything from farts or some of these guys keyboard ninja skills both of which are harmless.
Arguing for him not to speak his mind is doing way more damage to any cause then when he does. Everybody is offended by something and always have been only difference is now now days everyone has to share their snowflake feelings.
Unless you work for a law enforcement “Tactical team” then you can have all the fun toys. It will only get worse.
Another great write up Clay. Love your articles. Keep them coming
The right product at the right time.
Can an ISB for the PC 9mm be far behind?
Suppressors sell over the counter in Europe for small bucks, but here in the free land they are restricted. Wake up.
I imagine alot are going to wait for the hush act to buy one of these.
Ruger probably jumped the gun on these sadly.if gun owners unified for liberty voted Nov6 we’d have it before rabbit season ended.
But I’m dreaming.
If it were not for 41F I would have already had one of these.
We have a communist chief of police, so 41F ended our NFA purchases. I was hoping Trump would do as his kid said and eliminate suppressors from the NFA. It appears that was a lie also.
You do know Mike that the president can’t simply end something that’s in current law, the congress has to pass legislation doing that, then the president signs it. Please think before opening your mouth, it might save you grief in the future.
You mean like bumpstocks? Oh, wait, I guess the president can act without consent of congress.
I really think a suppressor sound reduction limit, or rather a minimum sound level (“must be at least xxx decibels minimum when attached with standard ammunition”, or something like that…) would be a good step forward. Too many movies showing suppressed guns making very little noise. Only a .22 or air rifle can get down to those levels, with a few exceptions. Most don’t want that level of noise reduction, just enough to be relatively safe on hearing. Require a special license for anything quieter… or ban civilian use of something really quiet altogether. I don’t see an issue with such a ban.
Shall not infringe Frank.
I liked your evaluation and demo of the Ruger 10/22. You have some interesting people making comments too. I have noticed in life you find “experts” everywhere….go to a gun range and you can’t swing a dead cat for not hitting one! Everyone has an opinion so don’t let the negatives get to you…if they were so damned hot why are YOU the guy doing the show? Keep up the good work.
I’ll have to say, being a combat veteran of Viet Nam, death is NOT quiet.
While I do like this rifle, I don’t think I can justify spending this amount of hard earned cash on another 22cal just so I can get it with a suppressor attached.
But this is a cool rifle.
What gets my attention a little more is the other barrel shown here, ….. the vented barrel for your Takedown 10/22.
I would love to know where you got that one.
Please advise if you have a source.
Thanks man – T
Awesome review of another great ruger 10/22 and now I can shoot in my back yard!Keep the great videos coming too!
I remember when Sionics bored custom suppressed barrels for the 10-22 and sold them to SWAT and other agencies as special-ops toys. Nice to see Ruger decided to get into that market themselves,
LOVE THOSE POLITICALLY CORRECT LIBERALS. SO THE MARINE SPOKE FROM HIS HEART. ANYONE WITH A PEA BRAIN UNDERSTOOD WHAT HIS WORDS MEANT. NOW LIBS ARE BRINGING UP CHILDREN, TODAYS DAY AND AGE. YOU LIBERALS CREATED THIS. SO SWALLOW AND CHOKE ON IT. GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Quiet As Deat
Do you know what actually hurts the cause of gun owners more than the verbiage above which I personally like, but what hurts us is to argue like third graders over a quote? We have to be one solid unit with these Democrats that have went rabid like against a great President.
Gun ownership is fairly safe for the next 25 years and more if Ginsburg leaves the Supreme Court. Owning a gun will always be an unalienable right and you know darn well we will never give up our firearms. Worry about the “Patriot Act” that has stolen the entire 4TH Amendment as that is a real threat. Why should we be accosted at airports 15 years after 9/11? The “Patriot Act” has nothing to do with patriotism and everything about search and seizure up to and including your home.
Your body is a Temple and your house is your Castle and that’s why our Founding Fathers said clearly a law-abiding man can protect himself and his family. Thomas Jefferson was actually afraid of government intruding into our lives when he said,”Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within the limits drawn around us by equal rights of others. I do not add “within the limits of the law” because the law is often but the TyrantsWill, and always so when it violates the Rights of the Individual.”
Basically, we are a huge “Voting Block” along with the baby boomers and that means if you do not vote Republican this November, our country just might fail and our President might be impeached. If you like that thought then you have no business on this site and the NRA.
Think hard on this as when the FBI tries to topple a duly elected President, we are in a land that our founding fathers never thought about.
Obama introduced racism once again into our country and we need to fix that. We have a multi-billionaire Soros who collected Jews during WW11 who can move the entire NYSE by one trade. We have ANTIFA making trouble all around the world now and Saul Alinsky being taught to youngsters in college. Death is Silent Guys but getting off your butts and voting is also Silent.
It is the Outcome that could change this nation I love and served so let the “Silent Majority” speak this Fall.
C’mon Clay! “Quiet as death himself” not tryin to nag here, but you really should have someone proof read your articles before they get posted. Phrases like that only make us ALL look like lunatics that just wanna kill everything we see. With that outta the way, why bother with a suppressed .22 rimfire? If you want quiet shoot cb’s. My Winchester model 67 is so quiet with those in it that the firing pin snapping the rim is louder than the muzzle! And I live in a densely populated area!!! The 10/22 is iconic and the takedown has potential to last generations, but stupid ass gimics like these only hurt our 2A stance.
I agree that the quote is not so great, but disagree about the suppressor.
Look at the ballistic difference between your CB ammo and say mini mag, the energy is triple.
If I need to kill a varmint without damaging my hearing why would you call it a gimmick to do so humanely to the animal and safe to my ears?
Not to mention I can set with the grand kids at the range for hours with a suppressed .22 and not need hearing protection for any of us.
Spend a few hours at a range with a suppressor and you will see what you are missing. When liberals squawk about suppressors, ask them why many other countries demand gun owners have them, and also ask them why it is a law for automobiles to have suppressors on their exhaust? Don’t buy into their drama.
\”Quiet as Death Himself\”
Once more you show you are a Moron.
This is just the kind of ammo the Left/Anti-gunners need and use against us and you are the supplier.
Idiot!
\”The Bearded Pretender”\
Once more you show you are a moron. This is the kind of comment that most of love and don’t care what anti-gunners think. They have all the “ammo” that they need and it’s people like you that think talking pretty to these types is what makes radical terrorists who are intent on destroying human rights feel less like destroying your rights, who need to be institutionalized for imbecile thought processes. STOP IT! GET SOME HELP! It hasn’t worked in the past and it won’t work now.
But is it good for shooting people in the face (phony Clay’s favorite phrase)?
eat me princess. and yes, it is good for that.
Sorry proffesor ,that is a common expression for government from most people.
75 yrs old with a stocked safe in my den. More over the top verbiage. Ready to teach another grandson safe and proper gun handling and the thoughtless phrase “quiet as death” will never be mentioned or discussed. What a crock to use verbiage like this in this day and age.
Lighten up Roger !
MSRP for the 10/22 in the article is $659, only slightly more than the integral suppressor. A more practical purchase is a separate suppressor that can be switched to other rifles or pistols and costs less.
Clay, when I started out in Basic Training at Ft. Dix, we used rolled up cigarette filters as ear protection,it was all we had. Some good that did! The point is,today with all the emphasis on saving your hearing and ear protection, why not drop the suppressor, silencer tax from the 1900’s and allow folks to buy safe reliable weapon suppressors without the extra cost and help protect the hearing of the current and follow on generations. People who willingly or by accident have been exposed to hearing damaging noise levels will spend way more than $200.00 later in life for hearing aides. Furthermore,I cannot see the impact of loosing $200.00 per tax stamp on our Goverment, Unless it means that some Senios level Goverment Executives will not get their new gold desktop pen & pencil sets or their Cocobolo wood desks? For me, the VA pays for my cheap-cheap hearing aids after blowing them out in 4 Wars…I mean “ conflicts”?
OUCH! DANG Ruger! C’mon! Get that price DOWN!
. . . so $629 for the can and another $200 for the stamp. I’m out!
You mean like in Europe. Amen, Jon.
MIST
I just found my next rifle, I really wasn’t in the market for another 22 LR but I am NOW!
The worlds most expensive plinker.
The communist state of Ill forbids suppressors ugh
I’m jealous. Here, in the PRK, we are not allowed to own such a heinous device, for fear that we would immediately launch a killing spree. We can’t have plastic soda straws either. I guess the current administration doesn’t want us sucking. That privilege is reserved for themselves. They suck like a hoover. Just curious, which states is this “legal”?
42 states allow them, at least on paper although some local LEOs may refuse to sign off on you getting your tax stamp. Only CA, DE, HI, IL, NJ, NY, MA, and RI flat out prohibit them at the state level.
Effective 7/13/16 CLEO’s signatures are no longer needed at the federal level.
So why don’t you leave the PDRK while you still can? I wouldn’t live there if you gave me a 10 million dollar home, not that I could afford the property taxes anyway.
Very Cool!
I can’t wait until “We the People” can purchase/own suppressors without the Gubment B.S.
As long as you write like you might also speak, there’s not much of a chance of that happening. Gubment?
Gubment is a form of calling the government in a conservative curriculum . To my knowledge proffesor,no one comes here for grammar or spelling lessons.
No one comes here to read your opinion like it is the only one that matters, mka. Using the word “gubment” is just ridiculous in any reasonably intelligent conversation.
Pussnly, i perfer “gub’mint”.
🙂
Me too. 😉☺
