The US Rifle .30 Cal M1, designed by John Garand of the US SA in the early 1930's, is arguably the single most significant rifle development of the 20th Century. Adopted by the US Army in 1936, the M1 was the first semi-automatic main battle rifle fielded by any armed force, and served as the US's main infantry weapon through WWII and Korea until being phased out in the late 1950's. The rifle's accuracy, ruggedness, and firepower far outclassed any of the bolt action rifles fielded by friend or foe in WWII. This rifle is from SA's first phase of Korean War production of 200000 rifles between 1952-54. Late-model M1's are prized by collectors because they were delivered at the tail end of the M1's service life after the Korean War and are typically in better shape than earlier vintages.

With the exception of the stainless steel gas tube, all metalwork bears a durable mil spec parkerized (phosphate-based matte gray) finish, set in a military dark-walnut stock bearing the correct “circle P” US cartouche on the grip. All wood components are dark and uniformly well oil-seasoned. Over the past 60-odd years, most M1 rifles have been arsenal reconditioned at least once. This rifle is probably no exception although the barrel group (“SA 1 53”) and receiver marks (serial # 4241xxx in SA's 4,200,001 ['52] – 4,399,999 ['54] first big post-WWII production block) indicate a likely date of manufacture in mid '52 or early '53. These data also support the theory that the barrel group is original to the gun. Note: This gun is over 60 years old . You should have it checked by a gunsmith before you shoot it. The desert-tan hard case is foam lined and bears the CMP logo.

Condition of this gun is “as-received” from the CMP, who, after inspecting it, rated the rifle as “Service Grade” with muzzle gauge and throat erosion reading 1+ and 4, respectively. Equivalent NRA grading would be (Modern) Very Good. Although in need of a thorough cleaning to remove stubborn copper and old cosmoline in thes, the bore is bright and not pitted with bold and well-defined rifling. The breech face, action, and follower linkages are in excellent condition and clean although there is still some remnant grease in the deep corners of the action. The chamber shows no pitting but is evenly dull and tarnished. A few speckles of rust occur in the tight machined angles of the exterior chamber mouth facing the follower, which is otherwise bright. With the exception of the stock-related fittings noted below, external metal finish is estimated at 96%. Finish has worn off most sharp edges, corners, and from the bearing surfaces at the front of the bolt and under the operating rod. Otherwise, finish on the flats and contours of the receiver, and barrel is largely intact although it has thinned and mottled slightly. There are a few cosmetic splotches of rust wash on parts of the receiver side flanges under the wood. The fairly delicate original finish on the gas tube assembly, which is stainless and not parkerized, is still mostly intact (about 95%). Light freckling occurs on parts of the the sling / swivel hardware, and the hand-guard clips are tarnished. The exterior mag floor plate is lightly pitted, and the butt plate has a patina of surface rust. Stock condition is Good with "character". The wood is well-oiled and dark from use and repeated military oil treatments. It shows the usual array dings and tool marks typical of a mil-surplus gun of this age, particularly on the left, with no splits except for a small cosmetic chip on the upper handguard.
