The National Firearms Museum proudly exhibits 2,700 guns spanning over six centuries, presenting America's most significant firearms ranging from a wheel-lock that came over on the Mayflower to a NYPD Officer's revolver recovered from the ashes of the World Trade Center.
This firearm is 1 of 2700 firearms displayed in the National Firearms Museum. Al Ljutic created and designed one of the most innovative and unusual looking shotguns found in the National Firearms Museum collection is the appropriately named Ljutic “Space Gun”. Custom built as a single shot trap gun, the Space Gun would be one man’s vision of the perfect 12-gauge trap gun.
The creation of the first Space Gun came about, amazingly, when Al Ljutic agreed to go trap shooting, but then realized he didn't have a shotgun. Quickly machining a single-shot tubular receiver with a button trigger, and then fitting a cylindrical round forearm and a high post rib on the muzzle section of the barrel, the impromptu shotgun was completed just in time for the trip to the range. While both Ljutic and his wife, Nadine, were later inducted into the American Trapshooting Hall of Fame, it likely wasn't for their skills in mass production that less than 20,000 Ljutic shotguns have ever been made. Moreover, the Ljutic Space gun has the most limited production of all Ljutic shotguns with only 240 produced.
Al Ljutic production of the Space Gun was not limited in production because the gun did not sell well, it was actually one of the most sought after guns he ever created, but this innovation was to prove a point in precision Trap Shooting and build the perfect Trap Gun, strangle looking as it may, the Ljutic Space Gun ergonomics were specifically designed for Trap Shooting. This rare futuristic-looking trap gun includes many innovative features. The loading/ejection port of this single-shot bolt-action gun is on the bottom of the receiver which both eases loading and enables the shooter to catch empty shells. Its straight design reduces recoil to .410 levels and decreases muzzle jump. The pistol grip adds directional control. A speed-lock mechanism minimizes firing delay. The high rib sight enables the shooter to maintain a "heads up" stance,. The Space Gun also has interchangeable choke tubes. Up for sale is Space Gun #090 which is the rarer and sought after full-length rear solid walnut stock which enables the shooter to rest the cheek comfortably. The butt plate is adjustable.
