This listing is for the exact revolver in the photos. We began selling Rossi’s well made copies of the Smith & Wesson Chief’s Special in the 1960s, as the model 30. After the 1968 Gun Control Act set size limits, these shipped in with 3 inch barrels to satisfy federal size constraints for imports, and then the importer cut the barrel to 2 1/4 inch. Manufacturer is Amadeo Rossi of Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, a Taurus affiliate. Importer was Garcia Corporation, located in the District of Colombia. From this specimen’s 132000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1971. It came to us from its home in New England. Type is traditional double and single action. Construction is entirely steel, with Brazilian Walnut magna type service grips. Frame is J Size small frame, with Square Butt Grip frame and 3 screw side plate. Barrel is 2 1/4 inch heavy type, cut from an original 3 1/2 inch. Front Sight is serrated dovetailed blade fit into its slot on the matte rib upper. Rear sight is frame integral fixed notch. Cylinder capacity is 5 rounds of .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber ammunition, and Garcia did Not rate its Rossis for +P ammo. Trigger is .240 serrated face service type with semi-target, shorter spur .400 serrated hammer. Thumb latch cylinder release is classic concave type. Weight empty is a well balanced 20 1/2 ounces with center of gravity at the trigger. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, 12 pound vicinity, with a 5 pound single action pull. Safety system consists of a transfer bar that prevents the firing pin from touching a cartridge primer unless the trigger is fully depressed. Surface detractions are moderate to extensive. Cylinder and barrel surfaces show finish loss and even some residual surface pitting. We rate this 68 as only Good, 70 percent vicinity by our estimate; but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Cylinder times and aligns correctly in all five positions. Lateral cylinder play is minimal with the trigger relaxed, but negligible with the trigger fully depressed. Blast effect to the cylinder face and top strap are minimal. We do not believe this revolver was fired more than 200 times, and none with +P ammunition. Replacement pricing on this model 68’s descendant model 351 is $300 or more in our area. We’re offering the serviceable, collectable model 68 in the photos, however, for only $ 229.00. Not transferable to civilian residents of California, District of Colombia, or Massachusetts.
