Description: US Army Model 1842 .69 caliber Musket, manufactured at Springfield Armory, displaying Battle Damage.

The last US issued smoothbore long arm, and the first to field the new percussion priming system.

Dated 1846, from the second year of production. Just in time for the War with Mexico. Marked vertically, in three lines : " SPRING FIELD 1846 " behind hammer. ' US ' lettered horizontally ahead of hammer.

31 inch barrel - Likely Civil War shortened. Many of these arms were pressed into service by both sides in the early days of the War Between the States.

US marked buttplate.

Lock functions well. Serviceable bore. Ramrod included.

Solid straight grained walnut stock shows relatively few handling dings. Apparent burn at top left next to upper tang.

Battle damage ; projectile / shrapnel impact ? on lower rt edge of buttstock. Crack at tip of forend wood on rt.

Overall clean specimen with some areas of light pitting . See photos.
